CHAPTER FORTY-NINE
JULY 2, 9 AM
ARIZONA REPUBLIC NEWSPAPER
The next morning as I approach my desk, the phone is ringing. It’s Captain Reed.
“We got two of the punks last night. They are residing in our lock-up. Going to question them this morning. Thought you would like to know.”
I rush over to the police department to watch the detectives take turns with these two hardened gang members. Getting no response. Finally, they are out of patience, and one of the cops puts his hands on Jesus and threatens to kick the s**t out of him.
Jesus is not cracking but says, “Why us? Did that kid Miguel give you our names? Slimy bastard. He is one of us also. Just as dirty.”
Captain Reed reaches for the phone and says to the operator,
“Have Officer Vail bring in Miguel again for questioning.”
