The Raven's Library
Aveline didn't sleep.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she couldn't stop staring at the book.
It rested exactly where it had fallen beside her bed.
Or...
Where she thought it had fallen.
She replayed the moment over and over in her mind.
The stack had slipped.
One book had tumbled.
Then...
It hadn't.
For the briefest heartbeat, it had simply... hovered.
She finally convinced herself it had been exhaustion.
A trick of the light.
Nothing more.
She quietly placed the book back on the bedside table and whispered a prayer to the Moon Goddess before climbing into bed.
Still...
Long after the candles had burned low...
She found herself watching the books.
Just in case.
The next morning arrived with another lesson from Alpha Celeste.
