**The Last Moonborn: The Forgotten Heir**

*Book I of The Moonborn Chronicles*

Aveline has spent her entire life believing she was born to serve.

Orphaned as an infant and raised within the Ashmoor Pack, she knows only hardship. Feared for a wolf that never awakened, blamed for every misfortune, and forced to live as little more than a servant, she has learned that silence is safer than hope. Kindness is a luxury she has never known.

When the Ashmoor Alpha travels to the Alpha Conclave, held every five years, Aveline expects another week of endless work and quiet suffering. Instead, one cruel act changes the course of her life forever.

Rescued by the Beta of the continent's most powerful pack after a brutal public beating, Aveline finds herself under the protection of Alpha Theodore Ravenswood—a legendary ruler who is stunned to discover she is his fated mate. But Aveline feels nothing. Her wolf lies dormant, her heart has forgotten how to trust, and the bond between them remains frustratingly one-sided.

Within the walls of Ravenswood Keep, Aveline experiences something she never imagined possible: compassion. As she forms unlikely friendships, trains beside warriors, studies the art of leadership, and begins to heal from the wounds of her past, strange abilities awaken within her. Broken bones mend beneath her touch. Objects move without explanation. Dreams whisper of a forgotten kingdom hidden beyond the reach of time.

Someone has been waiting for her.

Someone has been hunting her.

As ancient enemies emerge from the shadows and a century-old secret draws the continent's most powerful Alphas toward an impossible destination, Aveline must decide whether she will continue living as the frightened servant she was raised to be... or embrace the truth written in her blood.

Because she was never an orphan.

She was never an omega.

She is the last living descendant of the Moonborn—the lost bloodline of the Moon Goddess herself.

And when the final battle is won, one drop of her blood will awaken a forgotten kingdom... and change the fate of every werewolf alive.

Prologue: Ashes and Moonlight
Prologue: Ashes and Moonlight The rain came just before dawn. It fell in cold silver sheets across the towering pines that marked the northern border of the Ashmoor Pack territory, washing away scents and turning the forest floor into thick black mud. Two border warriors urged their patrol horses forward, keeping one eye on the modern tactical GPS units mounted to their leather saddles, eager to reach the warmth of the guard station before the storm worsened. Then, the older warrior froze. "There." A figure stumbled from between the rain-slicked trees. A woman. She wore what had once been an exquisite traveling cloak of deep sapphire velvet, now torn to ribbons by briers and soaked crimson with blood. Dark hair clung to her pale, deathly face, and her boots left a trail of heavy scarlet footprints in the mud behind her. Cradled tightly against her chest, wrapped in a coarse wool blanket embroidered with shimmering silver thread, was a newborn child. The woman swayed, taking one agonized step, then another. The moment her feet crossed the ancient stone markers that separated the lawless rogue lands from Ashmoor territory, her knees buckled. The warriors dismounted instantly, catching her before she struck the cold earth. "Easy," the older warrior muttered, dropping into the mud beside her. "Easy now. We've got you." She barely seemed to hear him. Her violet eyes—shining with a strange, luminescent hue that briefly defied the dark morning—searched desperately past them toward the distant silhouette of Ashmoor Castle rising like a stone leviathan above the trees. "The..." she whispered, her voice a ragged, wet gasp. "The Alpha..." "We'll take you to him," the younger warrior promised, reaching for his satellite radio. She shook her head weakly, gripping the older warrior’s wrist with a sudden, terrifying strength that shouldn't have belonged to a dying woman. "No time." With a trembling hand, she pulled the edge of the silver-threaded blanket aside. Inside lay a sleeping infant no more than a few hours old. She was tiny, perfect, and completely silent, her dark curls already damp from the rain, her tiny fist wrapped tightly around the edge of the cloth. The dying woman smiled, blood staining her pale lips. "So beautiful..." The older warrior swallowed hard against the tight knot in his throat. "What is her name? Who are your people?" The woman closed her eyes for a heartbeat, drawing in one final, shuddering breath before forcing them open to look at her child. "Aveline," she whispered. Nothing more. No family name. No title. No explanation. Her hand slipped from the blanket, falling heavily into the mud. By the time Alpha Marcus Ashmoor arrived in a sleek, armored black SUV alongside his Beta, Thomas, his Luna, Helena, and the pack physician, the woman had already gone perfectly still. The physician knelt in the mud, checked for a pulse, and quietly bowed his head. "I'm sorry, Alpha. She is gone." Alpha Marcus, looking every bit the modern feudal lord in his tailored wool coat and silver-hilted ceremonial sword, looked from the dead woman to the silent infant. "Search her." The warriors obeyed, but the search yielded nothing. No letters, no jewelry, no identification. The only object of note was a strange silver pendant tucked securely beneath the infant's blanket. It bore the image of a crescent moon encircling the head of a white wolf, crowned by seven stars. Marcus turned the heavy, ancient metal over in his palm. The back was entirely blank. "No surname?" Beta Thomas asked, checking his tablet for any recent rogue border crossings or missing nobility notices from neighboring territories. Marcus shook his head. "Nothing." Luna Helena stepped forward, her silk court skirts gathered neatly in her hand to avoid the mud, her expression hardening as she looked at the bundle. "Perhaps she's just a rogue's brat." "No," the physician countered, lifting a edge of the dead woman's torn cloak. "These clothes were handcrafted by master tailors. Expensive. Whoever she was... she came from somewhere important." Marcus looked down at the infant once more. The storm raged, and thunder cracked directly overhead, yet the baby hadn't cried. Not once. She simply stared up at the dark sky with quiet, observant eyes. "Very well," Marcus exhaled slowly, handing the pendant to his Beta. "Lock this away in the vault until we learn what it means. We cannot leave an infant to die on our borders." He looked toward the modern amenities of his castle. "She'll be raised here." Helena blinked, her voice sharp. "As family?" Marcus paused, his mind already drifting back to the trade agreements and land acquisitions waiting on his desk. "No. As the pack's responsibility." The Invisible Maid Years passed, blurring into a lifetime of cold stone floors and quiet endurance. The questions never found answers. No neighboring packs reported missing nobility, no rogues came claiming her, and eventually, people stopped asking. She became simply Aveline. Nothing more. By six years old, she knew every hallway in the sprawling castle. Not because she played within them, but because she scrubbed them. Her small hands wrapped around wooden soap buckets nearly as large as she was. If she spilled water, she was punished. If the morning fires went out, she was punished. If another child lied, she was punished. She learned quickly that innocence held little value when no one bothered asking for the truth. At eight, she watched from the kitchen windows, flour dusting her cheeks, as Alpha Marcus lifted his young daughter, Vivienne, onto his shoulders during the Harvest Festival. The little Alpha heir laughed as bright fireworks lit the evening sky. Aveline, standing in the shadows, smiled anyway. She had always loved seeing others happy. That soft smile earned her a sharp slap across the back of the head from one of the older maids. "Quit staring. Those celebrations aren't for servants. Get back to the hearth." Aveline lowered her eyes. "Yes, ma'am." At ten, she found an injured rabbit trapped beneath a fallen branch in the courtyard. Hidden in her small cellar room, she spent her few minutes of freedom tracking its recovery. She secretly read the properties of wild yarrow and willow bark from discarded herbalist guides, cleaning its wounds until the rabbit bounded away into the forest, fully healed. She cried happy tears all the way back to the castle. No one noticed. At twelve, Vivienne accused her of stealing a silk hair ribbon. The ribbon was later found beneath Vivienne's own mattress, but no apology came. Only a week without supper for Aveline to reflect on her "dishonesty." At fourteen, another servant shoved her into a heavy mahogany table, shattering a priceless porcelain vase. The servant instantly blamed the orphan. The punishment from Luna Helena was swift and unyielding: three days confined to the freezing cold storage cellar beneath the kitchens. No blankets, no light, and only scraps for food. When she finally emerged, a vicious fever burned through her body, turning her skin translucent. Yet, she still reported to work before sunrise. No one asked if she was well. At sixteen, Aveline began rising an hour earlier than required. Not because anyone demanded it, but because the castle library was completely empty before dawn. Hidden behind the forgotten, dust-covered shelves of historical texts, she taught herself to read the complex ledgers and ancient volumes no noble cared to look at. She memorized geography, botany, court etiquette, economics, and regional maps. Knowledge became a quiet armor. It was the one thing no one could take from her. By eighteen, the wolves within the pack's youth had all awakened. High-ranking warriors shifted early; nobles often shifted before their eighteenth birthday. Even the lowest omegas answered the pull of the Moon Goddess eventually. Except Aveline. Her eighteenth birthday passed unnoticed in a blur of endless chores. No ceremony, no shift, no wolf. The whispers among the pack guards and servants began almost immediately. Moon-cursed. Broken. Empty. Perhaps she isn't truly a wolf at all. Even Aveline began to wonder if they were right. She had no family, no surname, no place at any table. She belonged everywhere and nowhere. Yet, despite the systematic freezing out by Luna Helena and the casual cruelty of the pack, Aveline remained quietly kind. She fed stray cats from her own meager bowls of broth. She stayed up late into the night, long after her bones ached, stitching torn clothing for the younger orphan servants. She carried heavy loads for the elderly kitchen staff without being asked. She smiled more than anyone in her position had a reason to. Not because her life was easy, but because she hoped that someday, someone else might need that smile as desperately as she once had. High above the bustling estate, Alpha Marcus Ashmoor stood in his modern, glass-walled study overlooking the valley. His desk was buried under mountains of paper—timber contracts, global trade agreements, land acquisition deeds, and encryption keys for the pack's booming bank accounts. Under his rule, the Ashmoor territory had doubled. Its treasury overflowed. Neighboring Alphas respected his ruthless business acumen. To Marcus, this was absolute proof that his pack was thriving. Outside his heavy office door, a young maid in a faded, tightly laced bodice silently knelt on the cold marble, scrubbing dried mud from the floorboards. The door opened. Marcus stepped right over her without ever looking down, his mind already occupied by the upcoming Alpha Summit. Neither of them noticed the silver pendant locked away deep within the dark vaults beneath the castle. Nor did they see the faint, rhythmic pulse of silver moonlight that suddenly shimmered through its ancient metal... as though it had finally begun counting down the seconds until its rightful owner came to claim it.
