Chapter Four
Ravenswood
The world returned in fragments.
A distant rhythmic beeping.
Soft voices.
The scent of antiseptic mixed with lavender.
Cool air brushing against her face.
Aveline frowned.
The mattress beneath her was...
Soft.
Far softer than the narrow cot beneath the servants' stairs.
For one confused moment, she wondered if she had overslept.
Then the memories crashed back.
The courtyard.
Lady Vivienne.
The riding crop.
The Beta.
The silver-eyed Alpha.
Her eyes flew open.
White.
Everything was white.
White stone walls.
White linen curtains drifting gently in the breeze.
White sheets.
Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking towering mountains dusted with snow.
She bolted upright.
Pain shot through her ribs.
The movement pulled against bandages wrapped around her hands and cheek.
A small cry escaped her lips.
"Easy."
The voice was calm.
Gentle.
An elderly woman stepped into view wearing a crisp white healer's coat embroidered with a silver raven over her heart.
Her silver hair was neatly braided into a crown around her head.
Kind blue eyes studied Aveline carefully.
"You've been unconscious for several hours."
Aveline immediately tried to climb out of bed.
"I-I'm sorry."
The healer blinked.
"For what?"
"I wasn't trying to sleep."
"I'll go back to work."
She swung her legs over the edge of the bed.
Only to nearly collapse.
The healer caught her before she hit the floor.
"My dear."
There wasn't frustration in her voice.
Only concern.
"You're injured."
"I'm fine."
"No."
The healer smiled sadly.
"You've simply become accustomed to hurting."
Those words settled somewhere deep inside Aveline.
She had never considered there was a difference.
"My name is Doctor Eleanor Whitmore."
She guided Aveline back onto the bed.
"I'm Chief Healer for the Ravenswood Pack."
Aveline froze.
"Ravenswood?"
"Yes."
Panic flooded her face.
"I can't stay here."
"I belong to Ashmoor."
"I have duties."
"They'll punish the others if I don't return."
Doctor Whitmore gently rested a hand over hers.
"You're safe."
Aveline stared at the older woman.
Safe.
The word felt foreign.
Almost frightening.
"I'm afraid..." she whispered.
"I know."
A quiet knock sounded against the door.
The healer glanced toward it.
"Come in."
The door opened slowly.
A tall man stepped inside carrying a tray.
Beta Rowan.
He had exchanged his formal coat for a charcoal-gray sweater beneath a tailored vest, though the silver raven crest still gleamed over his heart.
He paused the moment he saw Aveline awake.
Relief crossed his face.
"Good."
"I was beginning to think you'd sleep through supper."
He crossed the room and placed the tray on the bedside table.
Fresh bread.
Roasted chicken.
Vegetables.
Fruit.
Warm soup.
Aveline's stomach growled loudly.
Embarrassment flooded her cheeks.
"I'm sorry."
Rowan frowned.
"Why are you apologizing?"
"I..."
She looked away.
"I shouldn't have..."
"...made noise."
Silence filled the room.
Rowan and Doctor Whitmore exchanged a glance.
The healer quietly excused herself.
"I'll give you both a moment."
The door clicked shut behind her.
Rowan pulled a chair beside the bed.
"You haven't eaten today."
"I had breakfast."
He looked at the untouched tray.
"When was the meal before that?"
She hesitated.
"I don't remember."
Rowan already knew the answer.
He picked up the bowl of soup.
"It isn't poisoned."
She blinked.
"I know."
"Then eat."
She reached for the spoon.
Her burned hand trembled violently.
She tried to hide it.
Rowan noticed anyway.
Without saying a word, he broke the bread into smaller pieces and quietly slid them closer.
No pity.
No fuss.
Just...
Help.
Aveline swallowed hard.
"Thank you."
The words came out almost silently.
After several careful bites, Rowan leaned back.
"My Alpha asked me to tell you something."
Aveline's shoulders immediately stiffened.
"He isn't angry."
She looked surprised.
"Why would he be?"
"You seemed afraid of him."
She remembered those silver eyes.
The overwhelming power surrounding him.
"I've never been that close to an Alpha."
Rowan smiled faintly.
"Theodore has that effect on people."
"He... doesn't like hurting others."
Aveline frowned.
"I thought Alphas were supposed to be frightening."
"Some are."
"And yours?"
"Our Alpha?"
Rowan chuckled softly.
"Our Alpha terrifies his enemies."
His expression warmed.
"The rest of us just know him as Theo."
She couldn't imagine calling an Alpha by his name.
Not without a title.
Not without permission.
The idea seemed impossible.
Later that evening...
Doctor Whitmore returned carrying a digital tablet.
"If you're feeling stronger, I'd like to finish your examination."
Aveline nodded nervously.
The healer passed a glowing scanner slowly over her body.
The screen filled with skeletal images.
Muscle tissue.
Old fractures.
Scar tissue.
Her gentle smile slowly disappeared.
She scanned again.
Longer this time.
Then a third.
Rowan noticed.
"Eleanor?"
She didn't answer.
Instead she enlarged the image of Aveline's ribs.
Then her shoulder.
Then her wrists.
Her brow furrowed deeper with every scan.
Finally...
She looked up.
"How old are you, child?"
"Eighteen."
The healer inhaled slowly.
"You've suffered over forty untreated fractures."
Aveline blinked.
"I have?"
"You didn't know?"
"I thought..."
She frowned in confusion.
"I thought they were bruises."
Doctor Whitmore looked physically ill.
She continued reading.
"Multiple rib fractures."
"Healed."
"Broken fingers."
"Healed."
"Dislocated shoulder."
"Healed."
"Old spinal compression."
"Healed."
She lowered the tablet.
"Who treated you?"
"No one."
The room fell silent.
Doctor Whitmore slowly sat down.
"That's impossible."
Aveline looked between them.
"I don't understand."
The healer reached for another scan.
One that measured spiritual energy.
A shimmering outline appeared beside Aveline's heart.
It was faint.
Almost invisible.
Doctor Whitmore's eyes widened.
She ran the scan again.
Then again.
Finally she whispered...
"Oh..."
Rowan leaned forward.
"What?"
The healer looked at him.
"I've only read about this."
She turned the tablet toward him.
"Look."
A tiny stream of silver light flowed continuously through Aveline's body.
Not outward.
Inward.
Everywhere injuries had once existed.
Rowan frowned.
"What am I seeing?"
Doctor Whitmore swallowed.
"Her wolf."
He looked up sharply.
"But she hasn't awakened."
"No."
The healer's voice was barely above a whisper.
"It hasn't."
She stared at Aveline with something very close to awe.
"It never had the chance."
Aveline's heart began to race.
"My wolf?"
Doctor Whitmore nodded slowly.
"Most wolves spend childhood growing stronger until they're ready to awaken."
She gently touched the glowing silver stream on the screen.
"Yours..."
"...has spent every day of your life keeping you alive."
Tears immediately filled Aveline's eyes.
"I don't understand."
"When your body was starved..."
"It fed you."
"When your bones broke..."
"It mended them."
"When infection threatened..."
"It fought for you."
She looked into Aveline's emerald eyes.
"Your wolf sacrificed its own awakening..."
"...so that you could survive."
The room became impossibly quiet.
Aveline lowered her gaze to her hands.
All those years...
Every beating.
Every winter fever.
Every hungry night.
She had believed herself alone.
Doctor Whitmore smiled through tears of her own.
"You were never alone."
Aveline's first tear landed on the blanket.
Then another.
Then another.
Not because she was afraid.
Not because she was hurt.
But because for the first time in her life...
She realized someone...
Something...
Had loved her enough to give up everything.
Just to keep her alive.
Outside the infirmary window, unnoticed by anyone inside, Alpha Theodore Ravenswood stood alone beneath the evening sky.
He had come only to ask whether she had awakened.
Instead, through the slightly open door, he heard every word.
His wolf let out a long, mournful howl inside his soul.
Not for himself.
Not because she had failed to recognize him.
But for the young woman whose own wolf had quietly sacrificed twenty years of its life...
Simply so she could live long enough to one day be loved.
