Chapter 6: The Quarry Nk's eyes never left the man's face as he sneered, "You'll be breaking rocks until you can't break anymore." The words were meant to break Nk's spirit, but instead, they fueled his determination. He knew he had to survive, not just for himself, but for his family and the ones he loved. The burly giant, seemingly pleased with himself, turned to leave, but not before delivering a swift kick to Nk's stomach. Nk doubled over, gasping for breath, but he refused to give in to the pain. As the man walked away, Nk's gaze followed him, taking in every detail of the surroundings. He noticed the layout of the camp, the number of guards, and the positioning of the quarries. Nk's mind began to work overtime, formulating a plan. He knew he couldn't escape immediately, not without gathering more information. He would have to bide his time, observe, and wait for the perfect moment to strike. As he stood up, Nk's eyes met the gaze of another prisoner, a man who had been watching him from the shadows. The man's expression was unreadable, but Nk sensed a glimmer of curiosity. Nk nodded slightly, wondering if he could trust this stranger. The man, sensing Nk's gaze, stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Nk's. "You're new here," he said, his voice low and gravelly. "What's your story?" Nk hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But something about the man's tone put him at ease. "I'm Nk," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was kidnapped along with my friend Kelvin when we were touring around the jungle of Congo. They followed us and they abducted us . We tried to escape but our friend , well former friend betrayed us. The man nodded, his expression grim. "I'm Ktema. Welcome to the quarry, Nk. You're in for a long haul.Nk's eyes locked onto Ktema's, searching for any sign of deceit. But all he saw was a deep-seated weariness and a hint of solidarity. "Thanks for the welcome," Nk said dryly, his voice laced with sarcasm. "I'm looking forward to breaking rocks until I drop." Ktema's expression didn't change, but Nk detected a faint glimmer of amusement in his eyes. "You'll learn to pace yourself," Ktema said, his voice low and gravelly. "But don't get too comfortable. This place has a way of breaking people." Nk's gaze narrowed, sensing there was more to Ktema's words than met the eye. "You've been here a while, huh?" he asked, his curiosity piqued. Ktema nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings before focusing back on Nk. "Long enough to know the rules. Keep your head down, do your work, and don't make waves. That's the key to survival here." Nk's jaw clenched, his mind racing with the implications. He knew he couldn't just accept his fate and do as he was told. He had to find a way out, no matter the cost. As they spoke, the guards began to herd the prisoners towards the quarries. Nk and Ktema fell into step, their chains rattling as they walked. "What's the layout of the camp?" Nk asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Ktema's eyes flicked towards him, a hint of surprise in his expression. "You're thinking of escaping, aren't you?" he whispered back. Nk's expression remained neutral, but Ktema's words confirmed his suspicions. "I'm just trying to understand my surroundings," Nk replied, his voice even. Ktema's gaze lingered on Nk's face before he nodded. "The camp is surrounded by a fence, topped with barbed wire. There are guards posted at regular intervals, and the quarries are worked in shifts. You'll be working the day shift, I assume." Nk's mind was racing with the information. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was determined to escape. And with Ktema's information, he might just have a chance. As they reached the quarries, Nk's eyes took in the scene before him. Prisoners were hacking away at the rock face, their sweat-drenched bodies a testament to the backbreaking labor. Nk's jaw clenched, his determination growing. He would not be broken. He would not give up. He would escape, no matter what it took.
