Chapter 3

2375 Words
Sitting in my office I began to stare out the window to the courtyard. The fountain that I always thought silly with two wolves, one larger than the other, heads raised howling, while water shot out of their mouths was quit relaxing. I found myself reminiscing over the events of the past week. Training had been going well, the females had integrated with the warriors well. Five more joined and some of the sixteen-year-old newly transitioned werewolves had also come and joined. This was great even if joining the warriors was not their goal our pack would have well versed fighters among its citizens therefore, keeping the elderly and pups even safer, my goal from the beginning. The rest of the week flew by with paperwork, meetings, and phone calls. By mid-week it was as if my father had never existed. Ugh, I missed him. This was not how this was supposed to turn out. A quick knock at the door, then the door flying open drew me out of my thoughts. Alarm set in when I saw who it was. “Diabolos,” I growled. “Who do you think you are barging into my pack, let alone my office unannounced?” “Alpha,” Burghart spoke first. “I tried to stop him, I was going to mind link you, but he wouldn’t stop.” Pointing at Diabolos with discus all over his face. I could see my bettas’ eyes getting darker, he was doing his best to keep his wolf under control.             “Miss Hette,” it was like Diabolos was being condescending when he spoke. “I felt it was time we came together and spoke of our future. There has been no reply to my letter of intent. I gave you time to grieve, but now I feel it is time. You possible cannot run a pack on your own and you have yet to find your mate so, it only seems fitting you take me as a chosen mate. We can then unite our packs together.”             If it was possible my jaw would have hit the floor, I was stunned by this revelation. How, could this pompous a-hole think that anyone would agree to this. My chest started rumbling and Fye let out a deep growl bringing me out of my shock. The room was dead silent until, “My pack Diabolos, for your information is in great hands, things around here could not be better.” The words seething out of my mouth. “And even though it is frankly none of your business, I am waiting for my fated mate that the Moon Goddess has selected for me.” My voice started to raise, Fye was coming to the front as I continued, “I will not now, not ever take a chosen mate, especially you. Wherever you came up with this notion that we would be together is as crazy as a purple elephant running through the snow. I suggest you get back in your vehicle and scurry your butt back to your pack before I lock you up for trespassing.” At this point I was raging, and it was taking everything to keep Fye from busting out and gnawing on this guy’s larynx.             “If you do not accept my offer, you will regret this. There is no way you, a female can keep a pack together and safe, you need me and my pack. Just think how powerful we would be.” Diabolo’s face changed to one of manipulation, with a crooked smile.             Snorting in retort, “Northern Lights Pack is in GREAT hands, thank you very much. Now I will not ask again, leeeaave my pack boundaries and do not come back. Before Diabolo could say anything else, “Burghart escort alpha Diabolo to our boarder post haste.”             “Yes, alpha, with pleasure,” Burghart was grinning from ear to ear.             “This is not the end of this, you will regret your actions here today, mark my word,” Diabolo spat out as Burghart was pushing him out of my office, and towards the front door. “Unhand me betta, I can see myself out,” he growled with menace. My head was spinning at what just occurred. Something doesn’t feel right about this, never has an alpha tried to take a chosen mate and combine packs. Although, I am the first female alpha, but still. “Fye, what are your thoughts?” speaking to my wolf.             “There was something off indeed, even his wolf gave off a strange vibe. He was not happy about his human wanting a chosen, but he was not fighting him on it either. I got the feeling his wolf was hiding something. I will say they are not as powerful as us. Diabolo may seem strong, but I could take his wolf in a fight. Keeping our guard up with that pack will be necessary.” Then Fye faded into the back of my mine. Burghart returned and General Leonhart with him.             “Alpha what happened?” Quizzed Leonhart.             “First off, will you please call me Hette when formalities are not necessary.”             ” Yes Al…. I mean Hette,” Leonhart stumbled over his words.             “That pompous, male chauvinistic pig just blatantly told me I needed to be his mate, goddess what was he thinking?” As I slumped back into my chair behind my desk, releasing the air out of my lungs which sounded like a tire with a leak; I looked over and saw my betta and general giving each other stares. I could tell by the dazed look on their faces they were speaking to one another via mind link.             “Would you two like to share with me?” I questioned them with the tilt of my head.             “We believe this has to do with you running the pack alone. We have been keeping our feelers out for the possible threats of challenges. This could come from anywhere, we are however, surprised it came from another alpha, rouges were our focal point, or even an alpha from a smaller pack. Diabolo has a hidden agenda. Our only guess is power. If you take him as a mate and combine the packs presumably, we could take over as the strongest pack in North America.” Burghart had his hands crossed across his chest, and a stone-cold face as he reiterated what him and Leonhart had discussed in their mind link. Shaking my head in disbelief I couldn’t fathom a coherent thought while trying to process this information. I sat up straight in my chair, “where do we go from here?” My betta and general stared at me and then Leonhart spoke up first, “I think it wise to up training for a start. You must expect the possibility of a challenge. Second, finding your mate would squash all of this.” Starring at both completely dumbfounded by what my general just said. I stood up, pulled my shoulders back and began to let my alpha aura out, slowly for I didn’t want full submission, but wanted to let them know I meant what I was about to say; “Gentlemen for the record,” venom was spuing with each word. “I do not need a man by myside to run and care for this pack, I realize it has only been one week since taking over and I feel I have done a dam decent job so far, without a man need I remind you. When the fates put me in contact with my true mate, I will have no issue becoming Luna and caring for this pack together. Until said time No one, and I mean no one is taking this pack from me. My family built this pack, and I will not allow it to be taken over by a power-hungry pig do I make myself clear?” I began to relax and release the hold I had on them hoping my point was made. I could see their bodies relax, no longer being forced to cower.             “Yes Alpha,” came from both.             “Moving forward, Leonhart I will do as you recommended and add to my training. Plan an extra hour, 3 days a week, after first training with everyone else. I want some of the warriors to join us and they will make up my protection squad as a just in case. I would like Irmele and one other female that is doing well to join. Obviously, Burghart you as well. Leonhart I will leave it to you to chose 6 more to join.”             “Yes, Hette, if there is nothing else, I will get right on that.”             “No, nothing else, tomorrow is Wednesday so we begin then, you are dismissed.” Leonhart gave a nod of his head, did an about turn and left my office.             “Hette, have you considered contacting Alpha of New Moon? They are the largest and strongest pack. Maybe they would be willing to help.” Burghart looked nervous while he asked.             “Wish it were that simple. After what happened today, I don’t know if I can trust another alpha. What if they too have an ulterior motive?” I began straightening up my desk and turning off the lights, I couldn’t work in the office anymore today, I had to get outside.             “You are probably right, suppose we should take one thing at a time, huh” As Burghart began to leave the office. “I will see if I can’t find some omegas to sniff around at some local taverns. Maybe we’ll get lucky and catch wind of something.” Locking the office door, I turned and smiled at my betta, “thanks, you have always been loyal to this family and pack, it is greatly appreciated. I won’t hold my breath but if we can get any kind of information that would be awesome. I’m heading over to the lake for some me time, link me if I’m needed.” With that I stepped outside into the warm sun, ducked behind one of the room dividers we had set up around the packhouse and begun removing my clothes. Letting Fye come to the front of our head and take over, the shift began. Bones moving and elongating, hair sprouting out of my whole body giving me a chill sensation. The whole processes takes less than a couple of seconds. Fye was ready and took off in a sprint to our favorite respite, the lake. When we got there Fye shocked me by jumping in and swimming around. It felt good, the coolness of the water snapping me out of my bad mood. Our red fur gently gliding through the water gave a relaxing feeling. Fyes powerful paws pushing the water propelling us forward and around. She got out next to my favorite boulder. Shook her fur dry sprinkling the grass and flowers closest to us with water.  Fye pushed herself to the back of our mind and shifting began again. Thankfully, not many came here, it was one of its attractions. Climbing up onto the boulder, then laying down to soak in the sun. I could feel its rays beating my body with rejuvenating energy. It was nice having my dark complexion, burning was not something I had to worry about. Laying there in all my glory allowing the drama of the day replay and then drift away like a cloud was exactly what I needed. Fye began to come forward speaking to me.             “I can not stop thinking about Diabolo’s wolf. There was no reason for him to hide anything from me. Evil seeped out of them. It was as if they knew something about us that we were completely clueless about.”             “What’s the point?” Getting irritated that Fye was taking my serenity away.             “Have you considered that your fathers freak car accident was not an accident at all? That maybe there was something behind it.”             Now confused, “Fye why would you bring up fathers’ death, just because that pig demanded my hand?”             Patiently Fye said; “Hear me out. The car couldn’t be examined because it fell off a cliff being turned into parts and dust. Only reason we knew it was your father, was that it was his car and he had gone out for the day. Ultimately, he was even shred apart.”             Breathing slowly, “Fye, please don’t remind me, we couldn’t even hold an open casket service for him.”             “Think about it Hette, the letter from Diabolo on your fathers’ desk, clearly unanswered. Then the way Diabolo and his wolf were behaving, as though working fast, in hopes to confuse or intimidate you. What if no response to the letter agitated Diabolo, or for all we know your father phoned him and told him no. You still hadn’t found your mate but were getting ready to go on the summer tour. Now that you have taken over the summer tour is out of the question. Diabolo would have known all of this. Hoping, you were weak and mourning for the death of your father, he might have believed a door would be left open for him to come in and take over.”             “Fye, this seems really farfetched. On the other hand, it also seems possible. No information has become known of tampering, how could we even prove this theory?” Worry began to hang over my head.             “That is the problem. We could send scouts out to the wreckage area and see if anything is found. Otherwise, patience to see if there is a slip.” At which point Fye began to take over shifting. I now sat in the back of our mind.             “Okay, Fye tomorrow we will select a crew to quietly go over the wreckage site. In the meantime, I believe we should keep this between us,” sighing with the thought of my fathers’ death not being an accident. “Let’s go home and get something for dinner.”
