Chapter 4

Waking up to grey skies and rain was perfect for how I felt. As much as I wanted to skip training, I knew deep down I couldn’t. Throwing the covers off and sitting up on the edge of my bed, slipping my feet into my soft, warm, moccasin slippers. Dragging my feet to the bathroom to take my morning pee. Ahhh, I thought to myself, so thankful a few years back we installed heated bidets. Not sitting on a cold toilet first thing in the morning was wonderful. After, I walked over to the sink, brushing the film off my teeth, and ridding myself of morning breath. Having curly hair there was no running a brush through it. I gathered it up, grabbed a scrunchie and created a ponytail. Headed over to my walk-in closet grabbed a pair of yoga pants, sports bra, and a long sleeve work out top because with Autumn here the mornings were a tad chilly. As I descended from the fifth floor I could smell and hear the fire on the first floor which helped heat the house. I took my time this morning glancing at the artisanship and carvings of the place I called home. My ancestors had traveled here from Southern Europe around 1095, of course then this continent was vast, and we didn’t have to hide like we do today. The Packhouse from the outside looked like a giant log cabin. It was originally built in a long house style with living quarters on one side and farm animals on the other. When you live in the North and Winter temperatures drop below the freezing mark, you’ve got to keep your livestock warm somehow, and that’s how it was done. Now of course we have barns and outbuildings, along with electricity. The first floor now consists of the kitchen, dining hall and a common room. As the pack grew my ancestors built up with a total of five floors. Second floor is for singles, third floor consists of guest rooms and a large conference room, which comes in handing when several packs need to come together. Fourth floor is the gamma quarters, which I still need to assign someone to that position. Dad lost his about six years ago and decided not to replace him. Betta is on the fourth floor as well and then alpha is on the fifth floor along with my office. It was humbling to think of how this pack started and because of strong werewolves it grew into the pack it is today. I want to make my ancestors proud, by building the pack, and being strong. Yet, I feel everyone is waiting for me to fail. Stepping off the last step of the staircase I walked past the kitchen giving Patty and Beatrice a wave.             “Good morning, ladies, smells great today,” giving a warm smile to the two of them.             “Thank you alpha, we only cook to please,” Patty laughed as she mixed batter in a bowl. Stepping outside I could feel a mist from the fog that had covered the land. As I walked over to the training field the mind alarm went off alerting the pack that we were being attacked.             “Rogues at the North boundary, approximately twenty,” came through everyone’s mind link. General Leonheart quickly shifted into Finn, the brown wolf with an intense black mask glanced at me and then took off towards the North boundary with all the warriors in tow. Getting ready to shift myself and help I heard Burghart come through mind link, “Alpha there is no need for you to come. Get the residents to the safety shelters in case any sneak through.”             Why? I thought to myself, is this their way of keeping lil ol’ me out of the way?  I started to gather the females that have been training in the mornings with us, when another mind alarm came through; “We’ve been breached by rogues on the East border, send back up.”             “Okay, ladies this is our time. You two stay behind and help get everyone into the bunkers. Anyone, of age and ability put in teams around the village for last minute protection. Everyone else follow me and remember your training.” Fye began to take over shifting as soon as I was on all four Fye took off like a bullet. I mind linked Burghart, “I’ve got the East border, will let you know situation once we get there,” and then I cut off the link. I glanced and to my right Ayla was right on our heels. Listening to these wolves charging to protect our home was glorious. It sounded like a herd of buffalo stampeding across the great plains. We got in sight and saw the two border patrol wolves were in quite a pickle. Five dirty looking brown wolves were taking turns biting and tossing my pack members around. A deep growl that vibrated from Fyes’ chest through the ground sounded. The rogue’s stopped for a brief second to see where the sound came from and they had the nerve to smirk at me, as if they were humored by what they saw. I could feel Fye burning with rage at the thought of their smugness.             “Ladies, there are five, pair up in two’s, show no mercy, kill each of them, we are going to send a message to the werewolf world.”             I cut off my mind link with the others, but kept it open to Irmele, “We are taking that big one, stay on my flank, if you can assess the two patrol wolves and pull them out of the fight.”             “Yes, alpha,” Irmele responded. Fye barreled into the large one knocking him, but not putting him on his side. He came back at us lunging however, we easily side stepped him. Fye spun around and her huge paw slammed across his face leaving a few nice gashes.             “That just pretied you up,” Fye taunted as she snarled at the male rogue.             “You’ll regret that bi**h,” saliva was dripping from his fangs. “You are nothing, but a wannabe alpha and a joke to the community, dethroning you and taking your pack is going to bring me immense pleasure,” the words seemed to almost hiss out from between his teeth. Out of the corner of our eyes I could see my female companions had only one left to take down. Ayla managed to get the two patrolling wolves to safety and assess their injuries. On the horizon a group of warriors were heading towards us.             Fye started to give a wolfy grin and giggle, “you pompous dill weed, you have no idea to whom you just spoke to.”         With that she pushed off with her back legs like she was going in for a high attack. The pompous dill weed began to lift like he was going for the jugular Fye then tucked her head, rolled her spine like the movement of a wave. Thus, throwing off the rogues attack. Fye lowered her back haunches, pushing with her front paws and seamlessly moving her jaw into the perfect position and clamping down on his throat. He let out a howl of pain as Fye shook him mercilessly. Using her front paw to gain leverage, she rolled him over. Giving the ability to clamp down on his windpipe. I could taste the iron as the blood spewed from the puncture holes. The rogues breathing became labored, until there was none. Fye released the wolf, puffed out her chest and howled in victory. The other females joined in, as the male warriors stood stationed in complete shock over the seen they were taking in. A big grey wolf with black paws stepped forward, Bodhi, Burgharts’ wolf lowered his head in submission. Shortly after each warrior followed Bodhi's lead and submitted to Fye. I didn’t let it phase me, although I was touched by the show of respect I had to continue without emotion.             “Dig a hole, burn the bodies and then cover it up. We will grow our pack on the bones of other’s if they choose to try and take what is ours. I will not roll over and allow my pack to be taken advantage of. You have my word,” Fye spoke out to those around us.             Bodhi trotted up to us and barred his neck. “Alpha, we captured three from the North attack.”             “Why were they not eliminated?” Fye asked. “With all do respect, they were not fighting like the others, something seemed off. They actually surrendered,” Bodhi had informed us.             “That is interesting, is the General taking them to the dungeons for questioning?”             “Yes, Alpha,” Bodhi responded.             With a thoughtful look, “try and find out what the purpose of this attack was, I want to know if it was more than this rogue trying to take my title. I would not have expected this from a rogue, but another established pack makes more sense.”             “Yes, Alpha,” to which Bodhi turned and headed back to the village. Looking around I felt pleased at what was done. Fye and I had gained the respect from some of the warriors, and we protected the pack like we have promised to do. I noticed the warriors were accepting the females help with clean up. This gave me hope that soon the warriors would see the positive in what I am trying to do with the pack.             I began speaking with Fye, “how did you move like that?”             “Your yoga inspired that little move,” Fye said with a smile. “Rolling from downward dog, and then sliding into up dog allowed me to not only trick the other wolf, but it put me in the perfect position for a kill shot.”             “Wow! Fye, that is amazing,” I felt such pride. Mind linking Irmele, “will you oversee this clean up and then come find me after y'all get cleaned up and eat. I need to head back.”             “No, problem. I will meet up with you later alpha.” I cut off the link and said to Fye, “Let’s head back, and get cleaned up, I would say training is over for the day,” I laughed. Leaving the Eastern border putting the sun to our heels we headed back to the pack house. It was nice to see the village beginning their day with a calm demeanor as if there wasn’t a care in the world. It warmed my heart. Pushing with my snout the main door opens to the Packhouse. I could smell bacon wafting in the air and my tummy growled with a hunger pain. Light pawed we snuck over to the kitchen window where the morning meal would be placed. I glanced at everything and then saw what I was looking for the plate of bacon. Keeping low as not to be seen we slowly worked our way to that plate of delicious, crispy goodness. Lifting my snout ever so slowly, I gently grabbed a piece of bacon with my incisors and begun to pull back, when,             “YOU,” a scream came from the kitchen, “GET OUT OF THAT BACON,” Beatrice had caught me and with a towel in her hand was running out of the kitchen after me flailing her arms and trying to spank me with that darn towel. Fye turned and without grip, started slipping on the floor with a piece of bacon in her mouth. The towel connected with our rear sending a stinging sensation to the area.             “Beatrice just spanked us Fye”, I began to laugh. The commotion caught the attention of those in the common room waiting for breakfast. The room erupted with laughter at seeing the kitchen omega chasing their leader down with a kitchen towel.             “I DON’T CARE WHO YOU ARE, KITCHEN RULES APPLY TO EVERYONE, NO SNEAKING OFF WITH FOOD.” Beatrice was beat red and clearly perturbed at my actions. I was unable to shift into my human form, so Fye was left skidding and sliding around trying to keep away from Beatrice. Fye had tucked her tail trying to keep from receiving the sting of that towel again. While circling the dining table I tried to concentrate enough to mind link Beatrice an apology; “Beatrice, I am so sorry, I was just so hungry.”             Beatrice stopped chasing me, “Alpha, you know the rules and if I let it slide for you the kitchen staff will lose all respect.”             “B you’re right,” I lowered my head and spit out the strip of bacon a trail of my saliva falling with it. Fye sat back on her hind quarters, and I continued my conversation with Beatrice through the mind link; “Beatrice please forgive me, I will never do that again,” I humbly begged.             “Alpha,” Beatrice kept a strong tone of assertion. “Patty and I will overlook it this one time as we do for the youngsters. However, if it happens again, we will treat you as such and take away bacon privileges for a week and make you responsible for cleaning the kitchen for a week as well.”             Not being able to control Fyes’ toothy grin I simple responded with; “Yes B, it will not happen again.”             “Now alpha, you might as well not let that slice of bacon go to waste, get cleaned up and come back for a proper breakfast,” Beatrice smiled with a motherly look.             “Yes, mam,” with a sarcastic tone I replied and turned and ran up the flight of stairs to my room.             “Whew Fye, that was a close one.” Shifting back into my human form.  “Yes," Fye replied; "I will never upset Beatrice and Patty again. Sad thing is that one slice of bacon was not worth the sting to our rear.” “I could not agree more,” I chuckled while heading to the bathroom to take a shower. I got cleaned up and changed into clean clothes, preparing for another day in the office. First, breakfast and I think I will help clean up as an added apology to let the kitchen staff know I learned my lesson.
