Selena hit the ground with a thud after the car hit her. Pain resonated throughout her body, blood seeped out from her sides. Her mind went back to when she was younger, when her parents died, promising her that the members of the pack would love and protect her. But here she was, lying alone and bleeding, her eyes closing and opening momentarily.
If Kieran was there, he would have come running to her, but he wasn't. No one was there. She hoped with each passing second that Kieran would come to her, confess that the ceremony was a mistake, that he still felt the same connection they shared. But with every passing moment, the realization that his choice had been made crushed her a little more
"So this is the end?" She thought as she coughed up blood and finally passed out.
Selena’s heart grew colder, her mind clouded by disappointment and betrayal. The vibrant forest that surrounded the Silverclaw Pack’s territory, once a place of comfort and belonging, now felt suffocating and strange. She was a shadow of herself, hollow, lost and wounded.
~THREE WEEKS LATER~
Selena's eyes fluttered open to a sterile, white ceiling and the steady beeping of a heart monitor. The sharp, antiseptic scent told her immediately where she was. A dull ache throbbed in her head, and she instinctively tried to sit up, only for a wave of pain to wash over her.
“Easy,” a soft voice said. A nurse appeared at her side, her face kind but cautious. “You’ve been through quite an ordeal. How do you feel?”
Selena's throat was dry, her voice barely a whisper. “Where am I?”
“Meadowbrook Hospital,” the nurse said. “You were in an accident, but you’re lucky to be alive.”
Lucky. The word seemed almost laughable. She was back to the world where she wasn't wanted, where she was rejected and where she had no one. Was she actually lucky?
As the nurse adjusted the IV drip, Selena’s mind raced, piecing together the last few hours. She remembered the headlights, the screech, the shattering impact. The fear that seized her chest was replaced by a strange sense of emptiness.
The nurse felt her heartbeat increasing "Calm down, Miss." The nurse said, gently patting her hand.
"You should stay still. You're still healing. But judging from your injuries, you healed up faster than an average person. Your injuries would have taken about a six weeks to heal up but..."
" How long have I been out?" Selena asked.
"Hmm, you were brought here three weeks ago, then got emergency surgery. We almost declared you comatose. I'll go call the doctor, she brought you to the hospital herself, then we'll run some tests to make sure you're okay"
Soon, the doctor came in with some other nurses.
"Miss, you're finally awake. It's good to see your eyes open. I was afraid I sent someone into a comatose state" The woman said with a cheerful smile. She was a woman in her mid-fourties, her cheerful smile reminded Selena of her mother.
"Sent someone? What do you mean by that?" Selena asked, confused.
" I was driving on the road and you just appeared from the forest and got in front of my car. It was too late to hit the brakes so I hit you. I'm so sorry" She apologized.
"The only reason you should apologize is because you brought me back to hell. I'm a mess. I'm sorry I ran into your car, I must have scared you"
"Don't talk like that. We'll just get your details and run additional tests. That's okay with you, right?"
Selena nodded and the questions began.
"My name is Selena Rivers and I'm 20 years old" She replied the question.
" Do you remember your parents name and where you come from? Or someone we can contact?"
"I'm an orphan. I don't remember where I come from and I don't have anyone to contact." Selena lied. She couldn't just reveal the fact that she wasn't a complete human to everyone in the hospital room.
"It's okay, dear. We'll be back with results of the test, then we can talk further. Get some rest"
The doctor and her nurses left after and Selena sighed. The way the doctor and nurses looked at her with concern reminded her of when she lost her parents, when every member of the pack would check up on her, feed her and make her reassured that she wasn't alone. Tears fell freely down her cheeks as she wished she and Kieran never had s*x that night. She wished that night never happened.
After a few hours, the door opened and this time, the doctor was alone. She had a look on her face that Selena couldn't decipher.
"Selena dear. We've run all tests and there's no problem with you anymore. I would just administer some pain killers, so you won't feel pain"
" That's good news, isn't it?" Selena said slowly, still confused by her expression.
“There’s something else,” the doctor added, her expression turning serious. She hesitated before continuing. “We ran some routine tests and we came across something. We found out that.... you’re pregnant.”
Time stopped.
Selena's breath caught in her throat, eyes wide as the doctor’s words echoed in her mind. Pregnant. Kieran’s name surged to the forefront of her thoughts, followed by a tidal wave of emotions: shock, confusion, and an ache so deep it threatened to tear her apart.
“Are you sure?” she asked, voice trembling.
The doctor nodded gently. “Yes. You’re about two weeks along. I'm happy you didn't lose your babies because of the fatal accident”
"Babies? Not one?" Selena said, the more shocked.
" It's twins. Looks like it's a big shock on you, so I'm going to wait until you can talk about it. You can see me as your guardian from now, Selena. I'm always available if you wanna talk" The doctor patted her shoulder lovingly before leaving her to digest her new situation.
Two weeks. Memories of that night, the heated passion, and the whispered confessions flooded back with a painful clarity. She placed a hand over her stomach, feeling the faintest flutter of life within—a life connected to Kieran, the man who had chosen another woman.
Tears pricked her eyes, but she blinked them away. This changed everything.
Her life wasn’t hers alone anymore.
