CHAPTER FOUR:
Selena lifted her head as she heard approaching footsteps.
"Miss Rivers. Here's your new cloth. We had to dispose the one you were wearing because of all the blood. And here's the only thing we found on you. Congratulations on your discharge" The nurse presented a midi gown with few flowery patterns on it and a bracelet with a half moon sign on it.
Kieran made the bracelet and both of them had it, their bracelets together made a full moon. The bracelet was to remind them of their friendship. They had sworn that they would be together on every full moon no matter the situation.
"Thanks, I really appreciate." Selena took it with a smile and with pain in her heart. The bracelet only brought memories that were once beautiful. Never in her life did she believe she'd be somewhere alone without someone to call friend or family. She was in a world where a type like her didn't exist.
The nurse smiled brightly and spoke "You should thank Doctor Martha. Maybe because she hit you with her car, but she has been paying very special attention to you. Take care of your health and stay away from cars, okay?"
Selena changed into the gown and went ahead to find Doctor Martha's office using the direction the nice nurse gave to her. Selena reached the office and stood before the door. She read the sign on the door out loud. " Doctor Martha Anders"
"That's me!" A voice said from behind, startling Selena.
"Congratulations on your discharge. It's nice to see you someplace else than the hospital room. I'm glad the gown fits right, I wondered if I was picking up the right size." Doctor Martha approached, looking tired from all the working.
"I wanted to come and say thank you for all you've done. Thank you for not abandoning me on the road when you hit me. Thank you for treating me when I didn't pay a dime. It was really nice meeting you." Selena bowed her head slightly in respect.
"You should thank me over dinner. I'm making food at home. They say home made food is the best for your health, you know?"
Selena shook her head rigorously in refusal. " No, no. You've done enough. I'll find my way from now on"
Doctor Martha rolled her eyes. " Come on, Selena. We haven't even had time to talk. How can I just let you go when I know that you have nowhere to go?"
Selena tried to prove stubborn and tough so she refused. "You don't have to do that. And how sure are you that I have nowhere to go?"
Doctor Martha sighed. " Selena, you can lie to yourself but you can't lie to me. I was once a therapist. You said you don't remember where you came from didn't you? I know that was a lie to cover up whatever happened to you. Also, I saw your face right before I hit you with my car. You looked hurt and broken, like a wounded wolf abandoned by the rest of it's pack"
Selena's eyes widened as she heard the last statement. " What do you even know about wolves? I said I'm okay, so why don't you believe that?"
" What do I know about wolves?" Doctor Martha scoffed. " I know for sure that they do not abandon a member of the pack unless something bad happened. I also know that some of them live amongst us. If you want to know how much I know, why not eat dinner at my place?"
Selena nodded hesitatingly and Doctor Martha smiled. " I'll go pick my things up"
*****
"I hope you like it. It's beef soup." Doctor Martha said with a smile as she served the food. She was now dressed in homey clothes, an apron wrapped around her waist.
Selena's stomach growled in response to the sweet smell of the food. Without responding, she took her spoon and started eating. She didn't stop until she finished the whole food.
"You can ask for more, you know. I cooked it in abundance." Doctor Martha said, finally sitting to eat her own food.
"Ah.. thank you, Doctor. It's delicious. You aren't eating?" Selena asked, noticing that Martha's plate was still filled.
"I feel full just by looking at you eat. My son always ate a lot too after healing from injuries."
" Healing from injuries?" Selena found Martha's use of word weird.
" Doctor Martha, you said if I wanted to know more about these wolves living amongst humans, I should follow you. I'm here now, so why don't you tell me all you know?"
Doctor Martha sighed. " Selena, I... I know you're not a normal human like me"
Selena stood up in shock. She had tried to keep her identity and she was just easily discovered by a doctor.
"How do you know that? Is there some kind of medical device you used on me?" Selena retorted.
Martha said with a sad look on her face. "No, dear. When I hit you, you had a scar on your face and it healed up immediately, like it was never there. That's how I found out about you. I was shocked and I thought I was seeing things until your healing process sped up like magic, then I believed it. Just when I thought I had the last werewolf in my house, you came over to me"
"Last... Last werewolf in your house? What do you mean by that? And how did you find out exactly what I was? You didn't even think I was a vampire or something else... Just..."
" Because my husband was just like you and my son is like you too" Martha interrupted Selena, leaving her in shock.
"Your husband is a werewolf?"
"Was. He died when our son was five years old. He left me too early. He would do anything for the pack he came from even when they sent him out for choosing a human as his mate. He always said, your species do not abandon each other . So when they came calling for him during pack war, he left and that was the last of him I ever saw."
Selena was sad and angry. The situation reminded her of her family. Her mother and father that gave their life for the pack, herself that was abandoned for loving the wrong person. So much for Werewolves never abandon each other . That motto was just there, it wasn't working. The elders would punish them if any mistake was made.
"I'm so sorry for what happened. You're been through a lot." Selena walked up to Martha and patted her back.
Martha suddenly held her hands. "Promise me, Selena dear. That no matter what, you won't go back to the people that abandoned you. You won't sacrifice your life for a cause that didn't even apply to you. Remember that you have two precious lives in you, you need to protect them from the place you left. You have to raise them and I want to help you. Will you keep staying here? I'll provide everything you need, I promise"
After a little hesitation and thought, Selena nodded. After all, she had nowhere to go and Martha was well versed in werewolf knowledge. She had carried babies too and she could be of so much help to her.
"I promise you. I won't go back. Thank you for taking me in, I'll make sure to pay you back"
Hearing that, Martha hugged Selena. " You're going to be okay. I'm here for you"
