Chapter 10
As soon as the seat belts signs went off, an air hostess dressed in a sleek black uniform with Eros’s company’s logo printed upon it....came in through the other side of the door, pushing a cart full of delicious food.
The theme was overall Greek though. With traditional Tomato fritters or Tomatokeftdes with mint and feta cheese as the appetizer. While, Moussaka and deliciously baked papoutsakia were served as the main course, along with Horitiki salad and Bougatsa.
The dessert on the other hand was a very Americanized looking cheese cake, all of which Eros devoured within minutes of getting them on his plate.
While, Anna barely ate a few morsels from her food. Her time wasted in pushing the food around in her plate.
“What happened? You don’t like the food glykia mou?” He broke the ongoing silence between them and spoke to her for the first time in hours. While sipping the red wine that had been served with the food.
Anna looked up from her plate and wondered if she should tell me what was going on in her mind.
“No, It’s not the food. I was just wondering about something......” Her voice trailed off as she watched his mouth harden into a straight line.
“By your antics, I can already tell that it’s something disputive. So, take my advice matia mou....and drop it!”
For a second silence prevailed, before Anna gathered all her courage and spoke again. “You know, just out of curiosity. Did you tell Despina that you were here to talk about my brother and sort out the rings matter and not to take me back to Greece?”
“But I AM taking you back to Greece glykia mou!” He replied with a mocking smile.
“But that’s different.” Anna frowned. “Last time I was in Greece as your lawfully wedded wife....and this time I will be there as your mistress.” even saying that word, left a bitter taste in her mouth.
“Tomayto, tomahto ......Anna mou....” He shrugged. “plus, only we know about our agreement and what part you are to play in it. For everyone else, you are still my wife. And so, you are going to act like it!”
“So- so your mother thinks that you were in the states to reconcile with me? And to-to give our marriage a second chance?” She asked, her mind running thousands miles per minute.
“Something like that.” Eros shrugged again, as if he didn’t care that he was essentially going to con his family and friends into believing that they were back together as a couple.
‘Poor Despina!’ Anna thought with another sigh. ‘Only if she knew that her son no longer feels anything for Anna and was merely out for salvaging his hurt ego, she might not have taken such a drastic step as to enrol herself into a hospital, to manipulate him into coming back.’
After that Eros returned to his seat in the back, all set up like a mini office with his laptop and tablets arranged around him.
And Anna fell back into yet another spell of melancholy silence.
Somewhere along the way though, when they were in the midst of Atlantic ocean. Anna fell asleep and then woke up with a start, after a while when she felt someone’s hands on her body.
“Eros? What are you doing?” She asked, still half asleep.
“Taking you to bed Matia mou. Go back to sleep.” His husky voice worked wonders on her tensed body as she once again fell back to sleep in the wide four-poster bed in the back cabin of the aircraft.
The next time she resurfaced though, morning sunlight was already filtering in through the open window and she could smell freshly brewed coffee, coming off from somewhere nearby.
She got up from the bed with a growling stomach, since she had eaten nothing after yesterday morning’s breakfast. After which Eros had made his grand entry and everything had topsy-turvy in her life.
Outside of the cabin, Anna found Eros laying back on a leather couch, sipping sweet coffee and enjoying the view.
“Good morning agape mou. Did you sleep well?” He asked, once he saw her approaching.
Anna didn’t want to reply. She still felt raw with emotions. She felt angry and betrayed. He was once again dragging her back to Greece, where she had spend some of the worst months of her life and as far as she could tell, nothing has really changed.
Despina Kozakis, the fire-breathing dragon will still be waiting for her there – to her turn her life into hell. And so will be the rest of the large Kozakis clan ready with their disapproving glances and trash talking behind her back.
Anna had survived it all, the last time she had been here. In fct, she had beared it with a grim determination because she had believed that her husband loved her and his family’s poor treatment of her, was just a small price to pay from that love.
But now, she knew differently. Eros had never loved her, at most he had been in lust with her....and after he realized that she was a virgin at the age of twenty-one. He decided to go all the way in and get married. His Greek pride demanded it of him.
The air hostess in the sleek uniform was back again, this time with a grand menu for breakfast.
There was eggs, bacon, hash browns and whole stack of pancakes with maple syrup and cream - all laden into a large plate, which was slid in front of her along with a glass of fresh orange juice.
“You didn’t eat anything last night, so I thought an America breakfast might finally tempt you into eating something.” Eros was looking at her with a strange glow in his bright green eyes, as she slowly picked up the knife and fork, her stomach practically growling at the smell of all that delicious food.
“Thank you.” She muttered, wondering where had the cold cynic Eros disappeared to, who had blackmailed her into coming here. Maybe, he was happy because he was coming home?
But as soon as she put a spoon full of gooey goodness of poached eggs into her mouth, all other thoughts flew right out of the window. She hadn’t had anything so good in a long time.
After she had finished with her breakfast and had licked off the last morsels of food from her plate, the air hostess returned to take the empty dishes away and that’s when the pilot’s announcement came.
“Mr. And Mrs. Kozakis, now we are approaching Athens where the local time is nine A.M. and the temperature is thirty degree Celsius. Please make sure to remain in your seats with your seatbelts firmly fastened. We hope that you have enjoyed flying with us. Thank you.”
The nervous flutter in the pit of her stomach, that had been there since yesterday when she had realized that she had to go back to Greece was increasing now. Metamorphosing into something way more scarier, as the closer they came to landing.
She fiddled with the hem of her skirt as the air craft made the final swoop and landed in the hot Greece tarmac of Athens International Airport. The two air hostesses and the both the pilots were waiting for them at the exit gate to shake hands and say goodbye to their employer and his wife, as they made their way out.
The hot sun of Greece fell on Anna’s pale skin like a burning whip and she quicly shaded her eyes as they descended the stairs and reached the tarmac, where Alexandria Christous – Eros’s very beautiful, dark haired cousin was waiting for them.
“Eros! Thank god you are here! What took you so long? Theia Despina (Aunty) had been so worried about you! She had been waiting for you since-” Her rapidly spoken words quickly halted as soon as she saw who had descended from the plane along with Eros.
Her nose turned up, and an expression akin to disgust flashed across her face as she saw Anna striding up to them in her cheap looking cotton summer dress.
“Hello, Alex.” Anna muttered with an rueful expression because she already knew that the only thing she was going to get in return for that greeting was even more derision and taunts.
“So, you dec
ided to come back after all?”
‘And so, the game begins!’ Anna wanted to laugh.
