Chapter 1
Over Memorial Day weekend, I took my out-of-town roommate home to stay over.
I never expected that very night she would get my brother drunk and spend the night with him.
Afterward, she upset my sister-in-law so badly that she miscarried, then went around claiming she was ruined because my brother had gotten her pregnant and she was too ashamed to go on living.
Rumors exploded across campus. My brother didn't want me dragged down by it, so he had no choice but to marry her.
After she married into our family, my roommate made everyone's life hell.
She used the child as leverage, forcing my parents to transfer the house into her name.
All that stress was too much for my parents. They were already in poor health, but the drama my roommate caused made them so furious that they ended up in the hospital.
My brother, caught in the middle, broke his leg and lost his job from all the pressure.
My whole family was a mess.
Then I woke up again, back to the day before the holiday.
The roommate's fake distressed voice echoed in my head, "So annoying, Lindy. You're all going home, and I'm the only one stuck in the dorm for the holiday."
The second I heard Nora Wells's voice, I realized I had been reborn.
In my last life, during Memorial Day weekend, Nora was the only one in our dorm who lived out of state and couldn't go home.
My parents were hospitable. Whenever I video-called them, Nora often complained about how jealous she was of my family.
More than once, she hinted that she wanted to come home with me and meet them.
I knew what she meant.
But our coursework was heavy, and we barely had time off, so I never found the right chance to say yes.
When the long weekend finally came, Nora complained again right in front of me.
I didn't think much of it and invited her to my house.
I never imagined that one decision would destroy my entire family.
My w******p profile picture was a picture of my family.
Nora saw the thick gold bracelet on my sister-in-law Emily Ross's wrist in the picture and stared at it with envy all over her face.
I didn't think about it too much and told her my brother had bought it for Emily.
Nora murmured, "Your brother treats her so well. If only..."
The things she learned from me were enough to feed her greed.
At some point, Nora set her sights on my family. She started scheming to replace Emily and marry my brother.
I had no idea what she was thinking.
I thought Nora was my best friend.
When Memorial Day came, I saw her stuck at school alone. I didn't want her to feel left out, so I invited her home.
Little did I know that I brought a plague to my family.
My parents knew I had a close friend, so they welcomed Nora with open arms.
My mom showed off her cooking. My dad brought out the good liquor he had been saving.
No one noticed Nora quietly pushing drink after drink on my brother, then slipping into his room after he passed out.
The next morning, when Emily came back from visiting her own parents, Nora put on a show in front of her and cried as if the world had ended, saying that my brother had taken advantage of her, and demanded an explanation.
Emily got so upset that she miscarried.
Within a week, rumors had spread across campus. Nora said I was her accomplice.
Everyone at school looked at me differently.
For my sake, my parents had no choice but to make my brother divorce Emily and marry Nora.
Less than six months after the wedding, both my parents were hospitalized.
My brother broke his leg and lost his job.
As for me, I was far away at school, drowning in insults and abuse. When I heard what had happened to my family, I broke down.
I was consumed by guilt.
Nora was right about one thing. I was her accomplice.
It was my fault for bringing her home.
If I hadn't, none of it would have happened.
Filled with regret and hatred for myself, I became a coward.
I jumped from the roof.
I never expected to wake up again on the day before the holiday, returning to the time when none of it had happened yet.
When Nora saw that I hadn't answered, she grabbed my hand and whined, "Come on, Lindy. Please? Just take me in for the holiday. I'll be so lonely in the dorm by myself."
I forced myself to stay calm, careful not to let anything slip.
But inside, a tidal wave of hatred surged through me.
God had sent me back for a reason.
He had given me a chance to deal with that b*tch.
Now wasn't the time to start a fight, though. I didn't have any proof.
All I could do was avoid her for now.
So when Nora asked, I refused outright.
I made up an excuse. "I'm not going home this holiday. I found a part-time job and want to make some money."
Nora looked doubtful. "Really? Your family has money. Why would you need a part-time job?"
My family lived downtown in the next city over. We were pretty well-off.
I needed to steady Nora first and settle the score later.
I kept lying. "I'm saving up to buy a gift for my future nephew."
That part wasn't exactly a lie.
Emily and I were close. I often posted gifts she gave me, and I always returned the favor. There was nothing strange about me caring about her.
Once I brought up that reason, Nora finally stopped pestering me.
After dealing with her, I collapsed onto my bed, exhausted.
Then my phone suddenly notified me that my train tickets had been booked successfully.
Only then did I remember that in my last life, I had wanted to surprise Nora and secretly bought her a ticket too.
Luckily, there was still time to cancel.
I immediately refunded the second ticket.
