Chapter four
It was laughable and pathetic at the same time.
A man with no compassion, a man who showed up every day to torture me even though deep down he knew the results would be the same. Such a relentless soul committed suicide and died…
It was the most cowardly of deaths.
The revelation of his cause of death kept me thinking for the rest of the evening and even into the night. And when I finally let sleep take me away, I was plunged into a deep dream.
I was standing in a field of flowers. The air smelled sweet, and the weather felt cold, dark clouds gathered and thunder could be heard in the distance. It was about to rain heavily.
“Enough playing guys, it's going to rain soon, we need to go inside”, I heard a strong voice say from a distance. Then giggling children's voices sounded too from that same direction. No matter how much I squinted, I could see them properly, and so I let my curiosity get the better of me and began walking towards the voices.
The more I kept walking, the more the weather got even worse. By the time I was a few meters away, the wind had gotten more violent, and it started to shower.
The voices were much closer, but I still couldn't see anybody. I was confused.
Then I said someone called, “Athena, come inside quickly, or you'll catch a cold.”
“Yes, papa”
I turned quickly to the sound and in a split second I saw a young girl running past me and disappearing in a flash. She looked younger than me. Was that me?
“Athena, Athena!” The man started calling my name louder and more seriously.
“Who’s that, who's there?” I looked around frantically trying to locate the voice.
“You shouldn't have come here, Athena”. I heard it clearly and directly, like the person was speaking in my ear, and then I jerked out of my slumber.
What was that? I asked myself as I stood up from bed. It was such a strange dream, and it felt so real, it was very scary.
I was still lost in my thoughts when I heard a loud horn sound from outside the building. Who was blowing such a loud horn this late at night?
I approached the window to see what all the ruckus was about. When I felt a sharp pain in my head, it was like my head was going to explode in a few minutes.
I staggered and let out a whimpered cry. I had to try to hold my head because it was feeling too heavy. I kept hearing the horn sound repeatedly, it was way louder, like it was in the same room as me.
“Whatever you hear, don't turn back, keep running, okay?”
An image flashed past my mind. I was looking at a man and crying profusely, his face was blurry from my tears. The forest surrounding us was dark, and a red moon hung in the sky, giving an ominous feeling.
The sound of the loud could still be heard not too far away.
There was nothing much to what I saw, but I was immediately overwhelmed by sadness and hurt. It was so much that tears poured out of my eyes like a stream. What was that, and why did it evoke such emotions in me?
Were my memories coming back after all?
My head had disappeared without a trace and another horn sound from outside reminded me that something was going on in the present. I wiped my teary face with the back of my hand and walked to the window to see what was going on.
Outside, it was chaotic. There were people gathered outside, but what caught my attention was Keiran standing in front of them. What was he up to now?
Right in the queue, my room door suddenly opened and Luther walked in. He looked angry but calm at the same time.
“Athena, I want you to stay here and not come out, okay? No matter what you hear”, he said, concerned. I was surprised and felt my heart flutter that he came to see me first before going down.
“What is Alpha Keiran doing?” I asked, curiously with fear in my eyes.
“I don't know, but since he is begging for my attention, I am ready to give him just that”, Luther growled and stepped out of the room without waiting for a reply from me.
“Be careful” I shouted out with a concerned voice, but he must have already left.
My face suddenly lit up in a smile a second later, and I hurried to the window to make sure I saw every minute of the drama about to happen. I haven't even started my revenge plan and the two brothers have already been clashing from time immemorial. It was going to make my work so much easier. I was going to make sure their disagreement grew into deep-seated hatred, and they kill each other eventually.
Apart from finding out who I was, this was my other life goal. They must pay dearly for everything. I will not rest until they feel as miserable as I felt in the past two years.
“Keiran, I see you hate to retire to bed at night”. Luther stepped out of the building with his men behind him. I couldn't see his face, but I could imagine it was angry.
Keiran smirked and replied, “A man with a goal doesn't sleep, haven't you heard? You are occupying my spot and I won't rest until I get back from you.”
“Oh for the love of the goddess, you never had a spot to begin with Keiran. Why are you so dense? Tradition has decided to stop all these tantrums. "You are not a child.Don't push me to take violent actions against you”, Luther warned.
Keiran burst out into hearty laughter in response and, when it died down, he said, “You think you can stop me, with what? The way I see it, you are just a coward hiding under the umbrella of tradition. Come to reality and test how much people really want you as their Alpha. "They are the ones that actually need to be heard, not tradition”, he fired.
“Yes, Keiran is right. "After our eventful meeting early today, you refused to send that criminal called mate away and has left us with no choice than to side with Keiran” An elderly woman chipped in from Keiran's side.
“Like I said before, Athena goes nowhere, and I don't care whether the council agrees or not. What I do agree with is letting the people decide. Let's put it to a vote. Who will become their Alpha? Me or Keiran…” Luther said.
I was almost grinning at this point, things were about to get interesting, and I couldn't wait to see the brothers tear at each other.
