Chapter 1
Two years
It's been two years since I woke up trapped here. Yes, I counted every single day even when there were no clocks or windows to see the passing of time. I only every time a day every time, that man showed up to torture me.
He never missed a day.
I gulped my saliva to satiate my parched throat as I waited for him to come around as usual. My stomach growled, indicating that it was hungry, but when was I never hungry? This man gave me just enough to keep me alive, but not enough to fill me. I was all bones from malnourishment.
Every day, I wished for death, but it was not forthcoming, no matter how much I begged him to just kill me. Death was a luxury, and I wasn't even lucky enough to have that.
I eyed the metal bar door, he should be here any minute now, he would soon come barraging me with the usual questions:
‘Where is your father?’
‘Where did your father escape to?’
'Did he tell you anything?’
… All the questions that I had no answer to because I couldn't remember a freaking thing. I couldn't remember my life before this, my family, my friends… absolutely nothing. Except for my name, he called me Athena.
I have tried so hard to remember something, anything that could reduce my punishment, but my memories were like a solid brick wall that I couldn't penetrate. He didn't believe me despite my pleas; he thought I was being stubborn and hiding the whereabouts of my father, so he kept at it for 2 years, hoping I would c***k someday.
Well, I did c***k, alright.
I gasped when I heard footsteps approaching. He was here.
Someone came to the door with a lamp. No, they were two, and they didn't look like him.
What was going on?
The door was opened, and the two came in and dragged me out harshly without a word.
“What’s going on, where are you taking me?” I asked in a faint tone; I was too starved to struggle, so they dragged me out easily.
The first daylight I saw, it pierced my eyes and made me wince. I saw the blue sky, trees, and people too… it's been so long, I felt like I could die with a smile on my face now.
Eyes turned to look at me as I passed; some held surprise, pity, or disgust. I knew I looked hideous, so it was expected. When the eyes were too much, I just looked away and listened to the surrounding conversations instead.
“What becomes of the pack now that the Alpha Benard is dead? "At this point, I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing,” A man said from the small crowds around.
“Of course, it's a good thing; his eldest son, Alpha Luther, will be taking over. It's a big break from Benard's tyranny because Luther is nothing like his father, and he cares for the people. "The discrimination in the pack will finally come to an end”, a woman answered.
“Don’t be too ahead of yourself. A pack can never survive without a calm Alpha. We need a new leader like Alpha Keiran, Benard's other son, and Luther's twin brother. "He is ruthless like his father, and even more, he has the iron fist needed to rule a great pack like ours,” another man chipped in.
“Oh please, you support Keiran because you benefited from Benard's rule. What about the poor masses? We are nothing but trash in the pack and only Luther understands our pleas. Anyway, your preference doesn't hold water because tradition acknowledges Luther as the rightful heir” The woman defended.
“To hell with tradition and quit being delusional. Alpha Keiran will definitely not sit and watch his brother take over; there's going to be a war coming, so you better choose the most powerful side likely to win. You foolish woman, all the prisoners are being brought out to be beheaded publicly; you think your kind Luther was the one who ordered their deaths? You had better
Accept the truth. Keiran is a natural-born leader.” The man countertake
I was soon taken away from there and I couldn't listen in on their conversation anymore, but it was enough to know the location of things. So the man who tortured me for two years was an Alpha who is now dead, and I am currently being taken to my death as well.
What a miserable life… I didn't know if I would be happy about Alpha Benard's death or sad about me dying in a few minutes.
With my hands and legs chained, I was taken to stand with other prisoners in front of the growing crowd. I kept my face down to avoid eyes and waited quietly to be beheaded.
After a few minutes, I heard a guard say in a loud voice, “All bow to Alpha Keiran”
While everyone bowed, I looked up to see the infamous man and immediately our eyes met. I was attacked by an intoxicating sense that I couldn't resist.
The red-dyed-haired man was right in front of me in a second and his icy blue eyes flashed brighter before we both blurted out at the same time.
“Mate”
I staggered back and gasped loudly in shock. The entire area was deathly silent too, like they couldn't believe what they had just heard. Heck, I couldn't believe it either.
Just then, a man's loud voice echoed in the air, “Keiran!!! "How dare you make a decision behind my back?” He sounded very angry and didn't waste time dashing towards Keiran and grabbing him by the shirt.
But Keiran wasn't looking, his eyes were still trained on me and he looked shocked. I looked at the other man. He was the exact replica of Keiran except he had dark hair, so he must be Alpha Luther. At the same time, he also turned to see why Keiran couldn't take his eyes off and the moment our eyes met, another strong scent hit me and we both blurted out.
“Mate”
And the crowd descended into chaos…
