Divorced

Rufus came back that night looking so haggard, and he staggered inside Marian's room. She was reading a book when he came inside. "Rufus?" She stood up from the bed and went to him. She held him and said, "Take it easy." She led him to the bed. "What happened to you?" She asked. "I just went to clear my head, then my friends forced me to have some drinks, and now I'm pissed-eye drunk." He slapped his head lightly. "Okay, but be more gentle next time; you'll definitely wake up with a hangover tomorrow." She sighed. He looked at her for a while and said, "You look very beautiful tonight, sweetheart." His lips went up. She was surprised to hear that coming from him. "Huh?" His fingers gently stroked her chin. "You look lovely." He drew closer and kissed her cheek. She blushed a little. "Uh, Rufus? Are you sure you're okay?" She was a bit worried. "I'm fine; I'm more than okay." He captured her lips in a passionate kiss. She was surprised and gasped at his lips; she never expected him to be this wild. Her hands unconsciously moved to the back of his hair, and she let her hand slide into his hair. This was the first time someone had kissed her; Rufus stole her first kiss. She never expected it to be this wild, though she enjoyed it. She had always wanted her first night to be very romantic, holding hands, walking by the river, dancing with candlelight, and many others. Then her husband would carry her around and tell her romantic tales; they'd have a long talk, and then she'd give him herself. Rufus's kisses were driving her crazy, though she really wanted them to be slow, soft ones. She had always wished it to be soft but full of lots of love. That night was truly a passionate one for her. *** Marian was often dizzy; she almost never wanted to eat anything except raw vegetables. The sight of food made her nauseous. This continued for weeks; she'd drink only water and eat raw vegetables. This was very obvious, as she could never concentrate on anything. She was always tipsy and did everything wrong. "What in the Lord's name is wrong with you?" Rufus yelled at her. She didn't answer him; she just dropped her gaze. "You're doing everything wrongly; you can't even do anything right. What has gotten into you? Were you always this disorganized?" She shook her head and said, "I honestly don't know what's wrong." She said it quietly. He shook his head angrily and stormed out of the kitchen. She sighed and looked at the broken plates on the ground. She was dizzy again, and she clutched the kitchen counter. "Ma'am, don't you think you should go for a pregnancy test?" The cook told her. She shook her head and said, "I don't think so; I'm not pregnant." "Well, you could just check; it's kind of obvious," she said. "What's obvious?" "The signs of pregnancy." She shook her head in disbelief. "Just try going for a pregnancy test." ... "Here, ma'am, it says you're two months pregnant." Her mouth dropped in shock. "Pregnant? I'm pregnant?" "Yes ma'am." The doctor nodded. She shook her head. "How's that even possible? Maybe it's a mistake or something; you should check again." The doctor shook his head and said, "No, ma'am, we don't make mistakes like that around here; you're two months pregnant. That's it." Marian felt heavy; how did she become pregnant? It was just her first night. Why did she become pregnant? She stood up and thanked the doctor. She went out of the office. Tears welled up in her eyes. "Oh my God." She covered her mouth. She sniffed and went out of the building. She boarded a taxi back home. It was quiet at home, and she felt a sense of dread hanging in the air. She was happy, but she didn't know how Rufus's reaction would be. She braced herself up and went into the house. She looked for Rufus and found him in his study. She breathed a sigh of relief; he didn't go to the office today. She knocked on the door slightly and asked, "May I come in?" He looked up and frowned when he saw it was Marian. He grunted a reply. She gulped and went in timidly. "Uh, Rufus, I have something to tell you." She gulped down nervously. He arched his brow. "What is it?" He asked hoarsely. "Actually, I just wanted to... show you something." She shook slightly. He arched his brow, leaned against his chair, and looked at her. "What is that? Just be straight to the point." He grumbled. She heaved and, with shaky hands, brought out her pregnancy test results. She walked to his table timidly and gave it to him. "Here." She handed it to him. He took it from her and glanced through it. "Positive?" He looked up at her. She nodded. "Yeah." She dropped her gaze. "And who is the father?" She hesitated for a while before responding, "It's you; you're the father." He was taken aback by her response, "Me? What the hell are you talking about?" He asked in disbelief. "You sleep with some random guy, and you try to pin your damn pregnancy on me?" He lashed out at her. Her mouth dropped in disbelief. "How could you say that? You slept with me!" His eyes flickered with rage. "Don't you dare try to pin something that's not related to me. You know what? I've had enough of you!" He stood up and went to his drawer. "I've been waiting for the right time, and now it's here." He took out some papers and went to her. "C'mon, sign them; I can't have a woman who cheats as a wife. Sign it." Her eyes were now blurred with tears. "You want to..." She covered her mouth and looked at the papers in front of her. He didn't look bothered at all. She took a pen, and with all the courage in her, she signed it. She broke down in tears and ran to the door. "Wait." He took out a check and wrote something on it. He flung it at her. "You could use that for your upkeep." He said it arrogantly. She picked it up, walked back to him, and put it on his palm. "You can keep it." She said it quietly. She headed to the door and ran out of the house.
