Chapter Thirty The Goodbye Good goodbyes are rarer than a decent sausage. The next day Mavis was all geared up and ready to go. It was the middle of summer, which in Scotland means the same as winter: sun, hail, frost, and storms. But also: sunsets at 11pm, sunrises at 4am, and magical moons. Mavis was out boiling tea with the Bag Lady, and by the time the Rod Man, the Roadworks Man, and Sheryl had arrived, she was handing around cups and having a whale of a time – until that is, her phone rang. Mavis had spent the morning organising. And for once there was no talk of her sister or Lumpy. Instead, she and Sheryl removed part of the shed and set up the hot tub in there. Sheryl brought her tape measure and gave Betty and the Bag Lady measuring duties while the Rod Man and the Roadworks
