My Heart In My Mouth

Ava’s Pov My alarm wakes me up at 7am prompt. The interview is slated for 9 a.m but I’d like to get there earlier, to give a better impression. I stretch briefly before heading to the bathroom, where I brush my teeth before stepping into the shower which I make quick, allowing the warm water to cascade over me as I mentally rehearse potential answers to the interview questions. Stepping out, I wrap a towel around myself and walk back into my bedroom. I walk over to my closet and slide the doors open, picking out a crisp black button-down shirt. I pair it with a navy blue skirt that falls just above my knees. I pull on the outfit, matching it off with a pair of black pumps. I head to my vanity, where I gather my hair into a sleek high ponytail, securing it with a hair tie. A few strands escape, framing my face just right. I keep my makeup minimal, a touch of foundation, a sweep of mascara, and a hint of blush. I finish with a nude lipstick. Satisfied, I spritz on a light, floral perfume. I stand in front of the full-length mirror, taking a moment to assess my appearance. Feeling ready, I grab my phone, double-check that my keys are in my bag, and head out the door. The morning air Is crisp as I step outside, and I quickly hail a cab. The ride is smooth and ten minutes later, we arrive at the destination, my heart skips a beat as I take in the sight of the building where the interview will take place. I step out of the cab, and take a deep breath. Knoxx Foods stood gallantly before me and I tried my best to not feel intimidated as I looked at the towering building. I couldn’t believe that I had been selected as a candidate to work as the assistant to the CEO of this big corporation. I took a deep breath and walked in, asking for directions to where the interview would be taking place. On getting there, I met the other candidates waiting patiently for their turn. Few minutes later, I was called in and with my heart in my mouth, I went. I met with the interview panel, two men and one woman, dressed impeccably, they asked me a series of questions, personal and professional and fortunately for me, a lot of the questions asked were questions I had come across on articles. As the interview progressed, I noticed the panel exchanging glances and nodding in agreement. Their expressions were encouraging, and I began to feel a glimmer of hope. By the time the last question was asked and answered, there was a brief moment of silence as they deliberated amongst themselves. My breath caught in my throat, my heart pounding as I waited for their verdict. Then, to my utter astonishment, the woman in the middle leaned forward with a warm smile and said, “Congratulations, we would like to offer you the position.” For a moment, I was stunned. Had I heard her correctly? They were hiring me on the spot? My joy was overwhelming, a flood of relief and excitement that I could barely contain. I was very close to jumping out of my chair and hugging each of them, but I managed to restrain myself. Instead, I smiled so widely that my face began to hurt, but I didn’t care. Out of all the candidates they must have interviewed, they found me qualified for this position. I don’t know what it was that guaranteed them that I was qualified for the job, but I did not care. I had gotten the job and that was all that mattered. The interview panel exchanged a few more pleasantries, and just as I was about to leave the room, the woman who had congratulated me added with a smile, “The CEO will be joining us shortly to meet you.” My heart, which had just started to calm down, began to race again. Meeting the CEO already? This was moving fast. I tried to steady my nerves, telling myself that this was just another professional encounter. But nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.
