Two days before the wedding, Larry Turner took time off work to go shopping with me for our new home stuff.

We were standing outside the mall when Larry suddenly let go of my hand.

"I need to tell you something. Your sister and I… we've been seeing each other for almost a year."

The happiness I'd been holding onto shattered in an instant, and for a moment, I had no idea how to react.

I just stood there, frozen, my brain completely blank.

Seeing the look on my face, Larry hesitated for a moment, guilt flashing across his eyes. But he still kept going.

"There were a few times when we almost got caught sneaking around behind your back. Last night, she was shaking under the blanket because she was scared you'd find out. Seeing her like that killed me. I don't want her suffering anymore. I thought about it for a long time before telling you. Whether we still get married or not, that's your choice."

Back when we got engaged before Christmas, Larry had been so excited he couldn't even sleep.

He spent the entire night picking a wedding date, finally choosing the day after my birthday. He told me it symbolized "happiness after happiness."

But now, it was like he'd forgotten all of it. The Larry who once loved me more than anything was gone.

I forced back the tears burning behind my eyes.

"Then let's do what you want. We're calling off the engagement."

Chapter 1
After hearing my answer, Larry didn't look relieved at all. Instead, he frowned slightly. "Freda, don't say things out of anger. Marriage isn't some joke. And your mom wouldn't want to see you making reckless decisions either, right?" If he had even a shred of respect for my mother, he never would've hooked up with Daisy Clark in the first place. When I was eight, Daisy and her mother, Hedy Wood, crashed my birthday party and destroyed my parents' marriage. My mom got so sick from the stress that she ended up bedridden. Her health never fully recovered after that, and these past two years had only gotten worse. Before being transferred into intensive care, the one thing she worried about most was me. Back then, what did Larry say? He held my hand and swore to heaven that he'd love me forever and never betray me. He looked nothing like my cheating father. That was why my mom finally trusted him enough to leave me in his care. But now? Every promise he made meant nothing. "You don't deserve to mention my mom," I snapped. "People like you disgusted her the most. Just like my dad." Larry's expression finally cracked. He strode toward me, the familiar woody scent of his cologne wrapping around me like a cage. "Disgusting? If I hadn't stayed by your side all these years, if I hadn't chosen you over and over again, do you think you'd have the life you do now? Freda, don't push your luck." I completely lost it. Before I could stop myself, I slapped him across the face. Larry froze in shock. Then Daisy suddenly rushed over and stood in front of him protectively, her face full of concern. "Please don't do this, Freda. We can sit down and talk things out." I let out a cold laugh. "What, you think I forgot to slap you too?" I raised my hand again, my palm still numb from hitting him. But before it could land, Larry grabbed my wrist hard enough to hurt. "Enough with the drama! If you want to hit me, fine. I deserve it for betraying you. But why are you dragging Daisy into this? She's innocent!" Innocent? That almost made me laugh. Actually, I did laugh, so hard my eyes started watering. "You mean the innocent daughter of a mistress who deliberately wrecked another woman's family? Or the innocent stepsister who slept with her own older sister's fiancé?" Under everyone's stares, Daisy's eyes instantly filled with tears. She shook her head desperately. "I didn't... I really didn't..." Her voice trembled as she cried. "Freda, why would you say that about me?" The second she started sobbing, Larry completely exploded. "Freda, she's your sister! Do you even know how hard this has been for her? Daisy kept hiding her feelings because she didn't want to hurt you. She cried alone in her room every night. How can you be so cruel to her?"
