To everyone else, Kaito is the perfect gentleman polished, attentive, and devoted beyond measure. But behind his charming smile and calm control lies an obsession burning far too bright: he believes Xhilo belongs entirely to him, and him alone. Every glance she gives another, every step she takes away from him, fuels a jealousy that twists into something dangerous. He watches her every move, knows every corner of her life, and slips past every boundary she sets convinced he is only “protecting” what is his. For Xhilo, what began as quiet care has turned into an invisible cage: she is the center of his world, but that world has no room for her freedom. And Kaito will stop at nothing—nothing—to mark her, claim her, and ensure no one ever takes her away… even if it means breaking every rule, crossing every line, and creeping into the spaces she thought were hers alone.

Chapter 1 My weird little protector
PRIMARY SCHOOL PLAYGROUND — AFTERNOON Bright sunlight filters through the thick, leafy branches of the huge old oak tree, casting soft shadows on the grass. Around them, the playground is loud and lively — children run, shout, and play games, their laughter filling the air. But under this tree, everything is quiet. There sits nine‑year‑old Xhilo. She looks small and withdrawn, wearing simple, slightly too‑big clothes that make her look even more fragile. Pulled low over her forehead is her favorite worn‑out cotton hat, gathering all her long black hair up and back, hiding most of her face. To everyone passing by, she looks gloomy, quiet, and a little odd — the kind of girl who never joins games, who only talks to her books. Some kids glance over and whisper mean little comments. “Look at her… always hiding under that hat.” “Weird. Why doesn’t she play?” “Probably too boring.” They giggle and run off, not noticing when Xhilo’s fingers tighten around the book in her lap, her eyes glistening faintly. She tries to focus on the story, but the words feel blurry — until her throat tightens, and a small, silent tear slips down her cheek, dropping onto the page. She keeps reading anyway, as if the story is the only thing that understands her. Then comes ten‑year‑old Kaito. He walks past the tree, full of energy, holding a small toy truck in one hand, his uniform a little messy, a streak of dirt on his cheek. He’s loud, confident, and always the center of attention — but today, something makes him stop in his tracks. He sees the girl sitting alone. At first, he barely notices her. Just another quiet kid keeping to herself, looking plain and unremarkable under that big hat. He almost walks away — until he sees her shoulders shaking, and more tears rolling down her face. Curious, he steps closer. A soft breeze suddenly blows through the branches, rustling the leaves. It catches the brim of Xhilo’s hat, lifting it just enough… and it slips right off, falling onto the grass beside her. For a heartbeat, everything goes still. All that long, soft black hair that was hidden away falls loose, cascading down past her shoulders like a dark, silky waterfall, framing her face completely. The shadow is gone — and what Kaito sees makes his breath catch in his throat. She isn’t plain at all. Her face is delicate and sweet, with soft, fair skin, round hazel eyes still wet with tears, and small, gentle features that look like they were drawn just for him. Under the hat, she is beautiful — far more beautiful than any girl he has ever seen, even at this young age. Kaito stands frozen, starstruck, amazed, and completely captivated. In that exact moment, something shifts deep inside his little chest — not just a simple crush, but a sudden, overwhelming feeling that feels too big for a ten‑year‑old. It’s as if his heart has finally found what it was looking for. He falls in love instantly, without even knowing her name yet. He hurries forward, picks up the hat carefully, and kneels right in front of her, his eyes wide and fixed only on her face. Xhilo jumps, startled, and quickly reaches up to cover her hair, her cheeks turning pink with embarrassment. Soft, shy voice “M‑my hat… thank you…” She tries to take it back, but Kaito holds it gently, not letting go just yet. He stares at her, drinking in every little detail, his expression serious and awestruck — far more intense than any other boy his age. Voice small but full of wonder “Don’t hide it… please. You look so pretty like that.” Xhilo blinks, surprised. No one has ever said that to her. Frowning a little, confused “But… everyone says I look weird when my hair is down.” Kaito shakes his head firmly, his gaze never leaving hers. “They’re wrong. They just don’t see. I see you — and you’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met.” He glances at the book in her hands, then back at her wet eyes. “Why are you crying? Is the story sad?” Xhilo nods slowly, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand. “Yes… the princess is all alone, and no one wants to protect her.” Kaito’s face hardens into something determined. He sets his toy truck down on the grass, leans in closer, and says it like it’s the most important promise in the world. “Then I’ll be her protector. No — your protector. You don’t have to be alone anymore. From now on, I’m the one who will watch over you.” Xhilo stares at him, wide‑eyed, feeling a strange warmth spread through her chest. He sounds so sure, so serious, even though they are just kids. “Really? But… you don’t even know me.” Kaito smiles — bright, earnest, and already carrying that quiet claim. “I know enough. I saw you when you were hiding, and I saw you now. And I know… from the moment your hat fell off, you belong to me.” He sits down right beside her, close enough that their shoulders touch, and hands her back the hat — but this time, he adds softly. “You can wear it if you want… but I hope sometimes, you’ll let your hair down again. I want to see you.” Xhilo looks at him, then at the hat in her hands, and for the first time all day, a small, shy smile tugs at her lips. XHILO: “Okay… my weird little protector.” Under the oak tree, in that quiet afternoon, the first thread of their story was tied.
