Chapter 18 Silent War

CLASSROOM / SCHOOL GROUNDS — DAYTIME From the moment Ryuu arrived, the classroom felt like it had split into two invisible sides — each man determined to stand out, to be the one who makes Xhilo smile, who eases her burdens, who proves he is the one she can rely on. Neither raises his voice, neither picks a fight openly, but every small action becomes a quiet contest of wits, resources, and devotion. And surprisingly, Ryuu proves far more clever and quick‑thinking than Kaito first expected — often matching, and sometimes even surpassing him, forcing Kaito to stay on his toes. Before class even starts, Kaito has already replaced her old, worn notebook with a brand‑new one — thick, smooth paper, her favorite shade of cream, the same type she once mentioned liking years ago. He also leaves a small, neatly wrapped pack of her favorite mint candies at the corner of her desk, arranged so it looks like it simply appeared there. When Xhilo sees them, she turns to him with a soft, grateful look. “Thank you, Kaito… this is exactly what I needed.” Kaito gives her a faint, satisfied smile, his eyes glinting — I know everything about you. But Ryuu notices immediately, and he does not let it end there. Before the bell rings, Ryuu pulls out a set of lightweight, ergonomic textbooks — the latest edition, easier to carry, with clearer notes and diagrams. He also hands her a custom‑made leather pen case, engraved with her initials in delicate silver, something far more personal than a simple notebook. “Old books strain your arms, and flimsy cases break easily,” he says with a bright, charming grin. “I remembered you hated heavy bags when we were kids. Thought this might help more.” Xhilo’s eyes widen in delight. “Ryuu… this is too much, but it’s perfect! Thank you so much.” Kaito’s jaw tightens almost imperceptibly. He had planned to bring her the same new editions by the end of the week — but Ryuu beat him to it, acting faster and more thoughtfully. At lunch, Kaito arranges for a specially prepared meal — balanced, warm, exactly the portion she prefers, made from ingredients he knows she likes but rarely gets to eat. He even has it served in a simple, elegant container, saying only, “I noticed you usually bring light food. You need more energy.” Xhilo thanks him, and it looks like he has won this round — until Ryuu steps in. Ryuu does not just bring food — he brings variety and thoughtfulness. He spreads out a selection of small, easy‑to‑eat dishes, including the traditional Filipino snacks she used to love as a child, things she hasn’t tasted in years. He also brings a thermos of warm calamansi honey tea, prepared just the way her mother used to make it — something Kaito had never learned, because those memories were older and more private. “I asked around the neighborhood where we grew up,” Ryuu says casually, as if it were nothing. “Found someone who still makes these the old way. Thought it might bring back good memories.” Xhilo’s face lights up, and she takes a bite, her eyes softening. “This tastes exactly like home… I haven’t had this in so long.” Kaito watches from across the table, his expression calm but his mind racing. How did he dig up those details? How did he move so fast? He realizes Ryuu is not just relying on money — he is using memory and familiarity, something Kaito cannot easily copy. When Xhilo struggles with a difficult subject, Kaito quietly slides her detailed notes — organized, highlighted, simplified to make it easy to understand. He even adds extra references from his own private library, materials not available in the school’s collection. “Study these tonight,” he says softly. “They will make it clearer.” Xhilo nods, grateful — until Ryuu leans over, scans the notes for a few seconds, and then explains the same concepts in a simpler, more conversational way, using examples from their daily lives and childhood games. He breaks down complex formulas and theories into stories and comparisons, making it stick in her mind much faster. “See?” Ryuu says with a warm laugh. “You don’t need to memorize every line — just understand how it works. That’s how I always got through exams back then.” Xhilo gasps softly. “Oh! Now I get it completely — thank you, Ryuu!” Kaito’s fingers curl slightly under the table. His notes were perfect, but Ryuu knew how to teach it in a way that felt natural, not forced or overwhelming. He had out‑smarted him again. Kaito’s POV Kaito watches every move, and for the first time, he feels truly challenged. He had always believed no one could match his knowledge, his resources, or his relentless attention to detail — but Ryuu is different. He is sharp, observant, and uses his charm and shared past with Xhilo like a quiet weapon. He acts quickly, thinks on his feet, and finds ways to be helpful without making her feel suffocated or watched. He is clever — too clever. He doesn’t just compete; he anticipates. He sees what I do, then finds a way to do it better, more personal, more meaningful to her. Yet Kaito does not back down. He adjusts his strategy, digging even deeper, searching for things even Ryuu would never know — her most private habits, the things she does when she is completely alone, and the promises from their childhood that Ryuu never witnessed. A new, darker urgency takes hold of him. I need to do something. The thought ignites a vivid, consuming image in his mind: flames licking up the walls, devouring the small, ordinary life she has built for herself. He imagines her fear, yes — but more importantly, he imagines her desperation, her need for safety. That is when she will truly see. That is when she will understand that the only constant, the only protection, the only everything she can ever rely on… is him. This isn’t cruelty. It’s necessity. The ultimate act of preservation. He sees himself as the architect of her safety, the guardian of her very breath. And sometimes, the most beautiful creations require the most drastic measures. The old must burn so the new can be born. And what rises from the ashes will be entirely his — completely and utterly his. RYUU'S POV Ryuu, for his part, is fully aware of the tension. Every time Kaito does something, he feels the weight of that intense gaze, and he knows exactly what it means. He pretends not to notice, but his violet eyes always flicker toward Kaito, reading him carefully. He is not just a classmate — he wants her, completely and obsessively. I can feel it in the air. But I won’t back down. I knew her first. I know her heart. And if he thinks he can lock her away in his perfect, controlled world… I will show her that there is also warmth, freedom, and choice. He does not fight with threats or money — he fights with presence, memory, and making her feel seen without feeling trapped. To Xhilo, it feels like the best days she has had in a long time. She only sees two young men who are kind, generous, and eager to help her. When Kaito gives her something, she feels protected and cared for. When Ryuu does the same, she feels happy and connected to her past. She smiles more, worries less, and thinks only: I am so lucky to have friends who look out for me. She never notices the way their eyes lock when she turns away — cold, challenging, calculating. She never sees the messages exchanged on their phones, the plans being made, the silent war being waged over who gets to stand closest to her heart. END OF CLASS — AFTERNOON As the bell rings, Kaito stands first, ready to walk her to the gate — but Ryuu is already there, holding her bag easily, smiling brightly. “Allow me. I’m going your way anyway.” Kaito steps beside him, his voice calm but firm. “I already told her I would accompany her. It’s safer this hour.” Ryuu does not back down, his violet eyes meeting Kaito’s silver‑blue ones — steady, unyielding. “Two escorts are better than one, don’t you think? We can keep her safe twice as well.” Xhilo looks between them, confused but smiling. “It’s really fine, you two… but thank you. Let’s walk together, then.” And so the three of them walk out — but between Kaito and Ryuu, every step is another move in their silent game, each one determined to outshine the other, each one convinced that he is the one who deserves to stay by her side forever.
