Claire got off the trolley at her neighborhood stop but instead of going home, she kept on walking until she was at Josie"s house.
Thankfully, it was Josie and not another family member who answered the door. That was because Claire was near to crying by the time she reached her friend"s house.
"Oh, my, what"s wrong, lovie?" Josie asked when she saw Claire"s face. Josie glanced around, but no other family members were in sight. "Come upstairs, quick, and tell me what happened," she whispered.
By the time Claire climbed the stairs, tears were spilling from her eyes. When she tripped on the last step, Josie took her arm and led Claire to her bedroom.
"Stay here," Josie commanded when Claire collapsed on the bed. "I"ll get a wet cloth for your face. You"re a sight."
