Chapter 1: The Iron Throne
The mahogany boardroom of Vance Enterprises smelled of cold espresso, expensive leather, and unadulterated panic.
At the head of the long table sat Elena Vance. At twenty-six, she was the youngest chief executive in the firm’s history, and she wore her title like a suit of medieval armor—stitched tight, unyielding, and impossible to pierce. Her fingers tapped a rhythmic, impatient tattoo against the polished wood as she stared down the three senior vice presidents huddled near the far end.
"Let’s stop pretending we’re here to discuss quarterly synergy, gentlemen," Elena said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence like a scalpel. Her dark eyes swept over them, sharp and merciless. "You called a pre-board meeting behind my back to draft an impeachment motion. Shall I read it out loud for you, or do you want to save yourselves the embarrassment?"
Senior Vice President Greg Palmer swallowed hard, his collar suddenly looking two sizes too small. "Elena, be reasonable. Under your leadership, the revenue has gone up by two hundred percent, yes, but—"
"But I’m a woman who doesn't smile enough? I don't coddle your fragile egos?"
Elena leaned forward, resting her weight on her palms. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. "Listen to me very carefully. In the two years I’ve held this seat, I’ve doubled our valuation and crushed our competitors. You are shareholders, which means I can't fire you from the board. But I can render your shares completely worthless, strip your committees, and turn this company into a living hell for every single one of you. Try to unseat me again, and let's see if your dividends can buy back your dignity."
She stood up, smoothing down the lapels of her charcoal blazer. "Meeting dismissed."
As she marched back to her private executive office, her pulse thrummed with a familiar, intoxicating adrenaline. Control. Everything in her life operated on exact metrics, flawless execution, and absolute dominance. She didn't believe in luck, and she certainly didn't believe in vulnerability. Vulnerability was a c***k in the foundation—and Elena Vance did not c***k.
Her senior assistant, Tina, scrambled out from behind the outer desk as Elena approached, looking like she might faint. "Ms. Vance, your mother is here. She’s... she’s waiting in your office."
Elena stopped dead in her tracks. "My mother? Tina, I gave strict instructions that I was not to be disturbed today."
"I tried, Ms. Vance, but she just walked right past security like she owned the building—which, technically, she sort of does..." Tina trailed off as Elena wrenched the heavy oak door open.
There sat Beatrice Vance, elegant, silver-haired, and radiating an aura of terrifying maternal entitlement, sipping herbal tea as if she were in a five-star spa rather than a corporate war zone. And standing awkwardly beside her, holding a battered leather duffel bag and wearing a rugged, country-style flannel shirt that clashed violently with the sleek minimalism of the penthouse office, was a tall, broad-shouldered man with a completely bewildered expression.
Elena’s jaw dropped. "Mother. What is the meaning of this? Who is this?"
Beatrice calmly set her teacup down, looking up with a triumphant smile. "Elena, darling. Meet Julian Hayes. Your husband-to-be."
Silence descended on the office, heavy and suffocating. Elena stared from her mother to the stranger, her carefully constructed world tilting sharply on its axis.
