Chapter 3

Lucas' body swayed slightly, and a flicker of pain crossed his face. When he saw me turn to leave, he immediately chased after me. Suddenly, a loud clap of thunder cracked across the sky, and Sophia covered her ears as she screamed, "Lucas, I’m scared! Waaaah!" Lucas halted mid-step, his eyes filled with conflict. But after glancing at me one last time, he still turned around and ran toward Sophia. That night, Sophia posted a social media update visible only to me. Hehe, so what if she’s pregnant? She still lost to me. What a pathetic loser. To make up for that b***h hitting me, my darling bought me a giant diamond ring! Sophia’s mockery was like a sharp blade piercing through the screen straight into my chest. In my previous life, not long after we got married, Lucas' company ran into trouble. Cash flow problems piled up, and even my maternity supplements were cut off. Because I felt sorry for him, I silently swallowed all my grief and bitterness. Yet behind my back, he bought Sophia the latest Bentley model. My sincerity instantly became a joke. The notification sound from my phone snapped me back to reality. It was actually Lucas. Lucas: Rachel, what happened today was my fault. Take this fifty thousand dollars and buy yourself some gifts. Fifty thousand dollars. Not even one-tenth the value of Sophia’s diamond ring. Seeing that I still hadn’t replied, Lucas anxiously sent a voice message. "Rachel, you’ve always been the most understanding. You can understand me, right?" The word "understanding" left me dazed for a moment. Back when he had just started his business, I squeezed into a tiny basement apartment with Lucas. The winters in North City were unbearably cold, and my hands and feet were covered in frostbite. The bed was so small that one careless turn could send us falling off, yet I never complained once. Every dollar I earned from working part-time went straight to him. Lucas' eyes turned red countless times as he broke down and tried to chase me away. He said, "Rachel, being with me isn’t supposed to make you suffer." I smiled, threw myself into his arms, and wore an expression full of proud happiness. "As long as I have you, I’m not afraid of anything." From that moment on, Lucas worked desperately to make money. If he had ten dollars, he would spend nine of them on me. He wanted so badly to give me a good life that even his dreams were filled with buying me a mansion. But later, we had money, while our love was no longer the same. Back then, my understanding made him cherish me. Now, it had become proof of how worthless I was. But after living through it all again, my feelings for him had long since vanished into smoke. I took out my phone and notified every relative that the wedding was canceled. Then I listed every gift he had ever given me on secondhand websites. Finally, I blocked and deleted all of Lucas' contact information. After finishing everything, I finally felt completely relieved. Early the next morning, I stepped into the headquarters of Bennett Group. Half of the company’s success came from my hard work. As long as I hadn’t resigned, I was still the general manager. But for some reason, from the moment I walked through the doors, everyone’s expressions had changed. Suppressing the strange feeling in my chest, I pushed open the door to my office, only to find Sophia sitting inside. She curled her lips into a smile, her eyes filled with subtle disdain. "Rachel, since you’re pregnant, you should stay home and rest. Leave the company matters to me. You don’t need to worry yourself anymore." Sophia looked completely confident, carrying herself like the lady of the house. But the contract I was about to finalize had cost me an entire year of hard work. How could I possibly hand it over so easily? Just as I was about to pull her away from my desk, a startled voice sounded behind me. "Rachel!" The moment Lucas saw me, he visibly relaxed. There was a trace of blame in his tone. "I called you so many times. Why didn’t you answer a single call?" I avoided the hand he tried to place on me and gestured toward Sophia, asking what was going on. A trace of guilt flashed across his face, but his tone left no room for discussion. "You’re pregnant now. From now on, leave the company matters to my sister-in-law." Without another word, he turned and left for a meeting, casually handing over all my hard work to someone else, leaving me standing there alone and helpless. Subordinates who had previously held grudges against me openly mocked me. "She really thought the company couldn’t survive without her? Guess reality hit her hard. She got kicked off her pedestal so fast." "Sophia really is something else. Doesn’t matter who you are, she comes in swinging at anyone already down!" Amid their laughter and ridicule, I calmly logged into my account using a backup computer and deleted every piece of confidential data.
