Today is Dahyun’s first day as an intern at CrimsonCore Technology. A new building, new people, new expectations and challenges.
Dahyun reached the office, confirm her department, Department 4, she walked in and found her seat. A narrow desk placed between two women who were sipping coffee and talking to each other.
They both saw her but ignore her presence. They start judging her, judgment is so loud that Dahyun hears them.
“She looks so... ugly.”
“Maybe they hired her at wrong position.”
”I swear, she looks like someone who got hired by mistake.”
The head of the department came over, placed a small stack of documents on her table, and said politely to her—“Check these files and enter the details in the system.”
She nodded and started working quietly, ignoring their talks.
But the two ladies continued mocking her.
“She probably don't know how to use the computers.”
“Let’s see how long she lasts... one week? Maybe two before she cries and leaves.”
Dahyun fingers paused over the keyboard.
She turned toward them and said calmly—“If you don't want to work, so please don't disturb ones who are trying.”
The words were simple and confident. Not rude. Not loud. But the office suddenly went silent. Then footsteps. It's the CEO.
He heard everything from a distance. The insults. Her one defence. He knew exactly who was wrong. But he had no intention of helping her. Afterall, he had warned her during the interview. That the job will never be easy and he himself tried to make challenges for her.
And he meant those words.
He stopped behind her chair. She turned towards him and the two women sat like status and behaving like innocent children.
It is his perfect chance to break her first day confidence.
CEO says, still wearing the black mask—“Miss intern.”
Dahyun replies—“Yes, sir?”
CEO coldly said—“Is this how you speak to your seniors on your first day.”
She tried to defend herself—“It wasn't me, they were....”
CEO said cutting through her words—“Quiet, I don't want excuses. I want discipline.”
The two women hide their faces and smirk with the coffee cups acting like they are working.
CEO continues, expression-less—“If you are done wasting time, get back to work. And next time, control your tone, new intern.”
He whispered a sentence that only heard by her—“Welcome to hell, intern.”
And he walked away casually, don't even look at the real culprits.
And she realised something clearly—“It was not the work she had to survive, it was HIM!! ”
She felt bad but courage holds her. She
completed the work given to her.
By the time, she packed up, most of people
were already gone. It almost 7 p.m. Her first day...and she felt drained. She grabbed her bag and turned towards the exit.
Suddenly someone’s footsteps echoes there.
He is not Seungmin but his assistant.
That man stopped in front of her desk
and dropped a thick file.
Assistant said—“CEO Kang wants this tomorrow morning. He ordered ordered you to do it.”
She said shockingly—“Tomorrow Morning? But…It’s already 7 p.m. How can I do this alone? In one night? Is he lost his mind??”
Assistant replied—“He said you have to.”
She stared at the file like it was a curse or
bad luck. A 70 page file. Charts, corrections,
summaries. Work that normally required a
week or a whole team. She took the file
and set on her desk.
She replied—“Fine, Tell him it will be done.”
The assistant just walked away.
She opened the file and whispered—“What kind of CEO gives a mountain of work to a
new intern on her first day?”
But she still worked. Hours passed. She is tired, her eyes are burning but she didn’t stop. She didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of seeing her fail. At 3am, she finally closed the file with a tired smile and sleepy eyes. Whispered—“DONE finally”
She went to her apartment, entered, her best friend Su-min was waiting on the sofa crossing her arms.
Su-min asked raising her voice—“Where the hell you were?” “Do you know what time it is?”
Dahyun dropped the file on the table and
fell directly onto the couch like a dying
plant. She replied—“I just had the worst day
of my life”
Su-min asked—“What happened? Tell me?”
Dahyun replied—“You know remember CEO?
The one who warned me that if he makes
challenges for me and make me leave the
job”
Su-min asked—“What did he do?”
Dahyun replied — “He meant those words. He’s not strict. He’s a demon in a suit.”
Su-min confused — “Explain.”
Dahyun replied — “Two seniors spent the wholemorning trash talking about me. Calling meugly, useless, unqualified and too many things. And when I told them to stop disturbing me guess who got scolded?”
Su-min replied—“You??”
Dahyun said—“Yeah, me and the worst part
was that he heard everything. He knew
it wasn’t my fault. He still blamed me.
He just wanted to humiliate me.”
Su-min said—“Oh! He is really taking his
revenge.”
Dahyun replied—“But that was a mistake. I
also said sorry.”
Su-min replied—“And what about throwing
money at his face??”
Dahyun replied—“Because He was humiliating me. And he deserved that action also. And you know what? blaming me infront of everyone when it’s not my fault was not even a big part”
She pointed at the huge file.
said—“He sent this huge file to finish before morning. Alone!! All night! Who does that to an new intern on her first day of working??”
“I completed this till 3am. I barely stopped.
I finished the whole thing alone.”
Su-min reacted with admiration — “WOW! Dahyun. That’s amazing. You did that all alone.”
Dahyun replied with a smile — “Yeah, he must try harder than today if he wants to break me.”
Su-min replied — “No.. I don’t even know how you survived today. That’s cruel. Absolutely cruel.”
Dahyun replied—“I know but I can’t give up.”
Su-min replied—“Then you rest now. Tomorrow’s another day. And before you sleep, you need to eat something.”
Dahyun replied—“You are right. I have not had dinner.”
Su-min took ramen from kitchen and said—
“Here, I made some ramen earlier. It is not much but you need food.”
Dahyun sat at the table and takes the bowl
said — “Thanks.”
She picked the chopsticks and started eating.
Su-min said—“Good. Now you will have a
little energy. You need to rest too.
It’s been a beautiful first day.”
Dahyun nodded and said — “Yeah and
tomorrow will be another day. New challenges, new ways to humiliate me. But atleast I survived today.”
Su-min yawned—“I’m going to sleep now.
You should eat and rest too. Goodnight.”
Dahyun replied—“Goodnight, Su-min.”
Su-min went to her room.
After Dahyun finished her dinner, put the bowl in kitchen, went to her room, lays down
on her bed said—“I will not let him
win. I have faced pain and judgment in my
past life and I also learned to rise alone.
I would not let anyone, not even him,
break me.”
