An unwanted Gig
CASSANDRA’S POV
That day was just like any other day. The day my life turned upside down.
I went to work at the Cyrus Bodyguard Agency like I had always done everyday for the past five years.
I became a bodyguard and joined this organization years ago after my sister, Laura Storm tragically passed away. My sister had also been the best bodyguard of this organization before her death and had been a great inspiration for me to be a bodyguard. I joined Cyrus Bodyguard Agency to find out who her killer was and to avenge her death.
In my efforts, I had become their top female bodyguard.
I walked into the building and met my fellow bodyguards.
"Morning, Nova," said Marcus, a handsome bodyguard who always blushed when he spoke to me.
I knew he had a crush on me but I always pretended not to see it. a charming smile.
I smiled, "Morning, guys. What's the buzz?"
Tanya, a petite but capable bodyguard, and also my best friend spoke up. "Just discussing our latest clients, Nova.”
Nova was my code name. My real name was Cassandra Storm.
“That tech mogul,” Tanya continued, “Richard Langley, was a real piece of work,”
I raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What did he do?"
Marcus snorted. "He insisted on taking a detour through the city's worst neighborhood, just to 'test' our skills."
The group shared a laugh, and I shook my head. "Some of these clients are insufferable.."
“Yes! By the way, Nova. I heard you will be assigned to someone soon. Have you found out who it is?”
“No I haven’t. I hope they are nice and smart. The lady person I guarded stressed me so much and was so annoying!”
“Don’t worry. There’s nothing you can’t handle. You are Nova after all, our hero,” said Marcus.
I gave him a small smile at his flattery.
Just then, the receptionist's voice came over the intercom. "Nova , your presence is requested in Mr. Jenkins' office."
My expression turned serious as I excused myself and headed to the office.
Inside, Mr. Jenkins, the agency's director, looked up from the file on his desk. "Ah, Nova! thanks for coming in. I have a new assignment for you."
My eyes narrowed. "Who's the client?"
Mr. Jenkins smiled. "None other than Darius Michaels , the billionaire heir to the Michaels family fortune."
I raised a brow, “Darius Michaels ? Isn't he just another spoilt rich kid?"
Mr. Jenkins chuckled. "Well, he does have a reputation, but I think you'll find him...enlightening."
I raised an eyebrow. "I doubt it. The last time I worked with a rich young heir, it ended in disaster. I had to beat him up myself just to get him to listen."
Mr. Jenkins leaned forward, his expression serious. "Nova, I know you have concerns, but Darius Michaels is different.“
”I'm not interested. Find someone else for the job."
“Darius Michaels is willing to pay millions of dollars for your services, and we could use the revenue."
I stood up, my chair scraping against the floor. "I've already considered it, and my answer is no."
Mr. Jenkins sighed. "Nova……”
But I was already out the door, slamming it shut behind me.
…………
After that day Jenkins kept trying to get me to take the job. He used so many tactics, even sent my friends to talk to me .
I decided to at least look into the family, starting from Darius himself.
I went to see a friend of mine who was a tech genius, Derek.
“I need a favor from you.”
“I don’t know I’m kind of busy this…”
“It's urgent.”
I walked further into his house and sat on one of the couches. Derek followed me.
“I want you to find out all the information you can on Darius Michaels.”
I handed him a picture of Darius .
“Really? Is he your crush or something? Because I can see how handsome he is,” Derek teased.
“No, he’s not. I just need information on him. Facts about him and even rumors. I know you can do this, so please be hasty about it. This information is very useful to me.”
“Alright. I’ll start right away,” said Derek, putting the picture in the middle of a book.
“Thank you. So how much will it cost me?”
“Just a hundred bucks.”
“A hundred bucks?! And you call that ‘Just'?”
“If you weren’t my friend and I didn’t owe you a favor,
I disgruntedly gave him the money and left not without saying;
“You’d better do a very good job!”
…………….
He did do a good job because while going through the info he sent me , I discovered they had a close connection to the Valos family, the family that had been involved in with my sister’s death.
My sister, Laura, had been guarding the Valos family when she was brutally killed. The case had never been solved, and I had been trying to get closer to the Valos family to uncover the truth. I knew in my mind that the Valos family had something to do with Laura’s death.
However, the Valos were powerful and elusive, making it impossible for me to infiltrate their inner circle.
But now, with the Michaels family being close friends with the Valos, I saw an opportunity. I could use this job to get closer to the Valos family and finally uncover the truth about Laura’s death.
With a newfound sense of determination, I decided to take the job. I would guard Darius Michaels , and in doing so, I would be one step closer to unraveling the mysteries of the Valos family.
The next day, I arrived at the Michaels ' mansion, ready to begin my new assignment.
I was greeted by Aaron and Diane Michaels , Darius ’s parents who looked like they had just stepped out of a fashion magazine.
“The thing is that our son doesn’t want a bodyguard but we will convince him.”
What?
I thought he was the one who directly requested for a bodyguard!
Shit this is going to be harder now.
Just as the interview was about to start, Aaron's phone rang. He answered, listened for a moment, and then turned to me with panic.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s Darius. His life is in danger. They said some assassins just attacked them at the bar!“
Oh boy. My first mission had already begun?
