Kaida POV
I ripped the bindings from my wrists in anger, surprising both the Alpha and the wolf Xander, who was now nearly convulsing in fear as he lowered himself fully to the ground in submission to his Alpha, begging for forgiveness.
“I didn’t know Alpha” the wolf whimpered out “she claimed to be on the run from Kane, we’ve all heard the rumors of how he takes powerful she wolves and forces them to mate his warriors. I thought that she was one such female”
“And you thought that was reason enough to endanger all of this? All of what Casey has been working toward” the Alpha snarled at his warrior, his furry seeping out in waves that would make even some of the strongest Betas tremble in fear.
The warrior simply whimpered in response, terrified of his Alpha’s anger.
“To be fair” I spoke up “It is true, I am on the run from Kane. I figured the only safe place would be with the Rogue Alpha” I wasn’t sure just who or what was going on here, and until I figured it out, or until I met with Casey, I wasn’t about to let my guard down around these wolves.
“Oh yeah?” the Alpha snorted “and I'm supposed to just take you at your word?”
“I made a blood oath with Casey” I growled out as my frustration with this Alpha grew “and I intend to keep it”
At the mention of the blood oath, the Alpha’s eyes narrowed “Show it to me” he snarled distrustfully. I lifted my wrist and approached where the Alpha was perched up against one of the posts that held up the tent. When I got close enough to grab, he yanked my wrist toward him and inspected the engravings. His eyes darted back and forth, as if reading the runic inscription. Eventually, he tossed my wrist out of his grip and eyed me up and down, as if he could find the answers he was searching for, written somewhere on my body.
Who the hell does this Alpha thinks he is to just man handle us like this?
Nikita growled angrily, her fury beginning to seem trough to my own consciousness. Immediately I threw up my walls, blocking her out. I couldn’t risk a repeat of what had nearly happened only moments ago.
“So which was it? The council or your pack?” he asked bluntly, taking me by surprise
“You can read it?” I asked, suddenly feeling more vulnerable than before. I hadn’t expected him to actually be able to read the oath itself, I had just hoped he would recognize that it was in fact one made with Casey.
The Alpha simply nodded, as most of his animosity towards me seemed to dissipate
“My pack” I answered, which wasn’t technically a lie, truthfully my pack has always been against me, and my mate, the Alpha of my pack, turned on me, so it might as well be the truth.
“I find that hard to believe” the Alpha grumbled out “Kane’s a bastard, but he’s not known for turning on his pack members unless they give him one damn good reason to” the Alpha’s eyes narrowed down on me again, his suspicion growing once more. He sniffed the air, his narrowed eyes never leaving me for a second, not even to blink “and you certainly don’t smell like them either”
I had to hand it to my father, if nothing else, at least this Alpha seemed loyal to him.
“Crimson Shadow was never my pack. Kane Marked me but I never actually joined” I mumbled out, still angry with the memories of that place “Blue Moon was my original pack, before I formed this one”
The Alpha’s eyes went wide as he took in my words “Blue Moon?” he questioned, his shoulders tensing at the mention of my old pack.
“Yes, but I formed my own pack, and came here. I have no relation to them anymore, so if you have any grievances with them, kindly direct them towards their Alpha, and not me” I growled out in anger. Just the thought of that leech of a mate could set my blood on fire.
The Alpha seemed deep in thought, as he remained perched up against the post, his arms crossed tightly against his chest as he tapped his finger against his bicep in agitation.
Whatever had been on his mind, seemed to not be bothering him any more as he pushed himself from his resting place and stood up, positioning himself uncomfortably closer to where I had been standing.
“I know you’re keeping things from me” He acknowledged, eyes narrowed “but I trust Casey and his judgement. If he made that blood oath with you, he must have some faith in you, and I'm sure he has his reasons. I won’t push for answers, unless I think not knowing may cause harm to the pack.” he uncrossed his arms and outstretched his hand “With that out of the way, I’m Markus, Stand in Alpha for Casey” he kept his hand out, patiently waiting for me to accept the greeting.
Part of me wanted to just leave him there waiting as some form of petty retribution for all the bullshit him and his warrior had put me through, but I thought better of it, and grabbed his hand in greeting.
“Kaida, Alpha of the Moon Cursed pack” I stated simply. Markus lifted a brow in question to my pack’s name, but refrained from making further comments.
“Casey isn’t here currently, but he comes through now and again, bringing back new wolves periodically, mostly rogues...”
“Mostly?” I questioned. I knew Casey’s true objective was to search for descendants, but I didn't know how to ask without directly stating it. Although I'm fairly sure that if my father trusts Markus enough to make him his stand in Alpha, then he probably trusts him with the knowledge of Descendants and Lycans being recruited, but I couldn’t be certain of that fact, and I didn’t want to risk anything. Not until I talked with Casey directly.
“Yes, mostly” Markus stated, not elaborating further “It’s why I have a hard time believing Casey recruited you” The alpha continued “He really only ever brings rogues back. If it weren’t for that oath, I may have killed you already”
Or died trying
Nikita growled in my head, and I had to agree with her. I could feel it. Day by day Nikita has been growing exponentially stronger, at an almost alarming rate. I wondered just how truly strong we would get, and if I would be able to tame the feral side that had been growing right alongside the growth in power.
“So, what now” I asked, trying to distract myself from such concerning thoughts. All I could do for now was subdue and control her as best I could, maybe my father would know a better way. He didn’t seem to have such issues and seemed to be in fairly good control of his Lycan, maybe there was a trick to this I was just unaware of. I really needed to meet with him, and soon.
“For now, I'll have you help out around the pack wherever you can. When Casey gets back, he’ll decide what to officially do with you”
“Do you have any idea when that would be?” I nearly growled out in annoyance
The Alpha glared down at me, not taking well to my disrespectful tone in his own pack
“You may be an Alpha pup, but this is my land. You would do good to remember that” he growled low and menacingly in an attempt to intimidate me, but it only served to further fuel my annoyance.
“Oh, and I hear I thought this was Casey’s pack” I stated calmly, without a single waver in my voice as I locked eyes with this arrogant Alpha “stand in alpha” I jabbed, emphasizing the difference in our status to this Beta, because after all, he was truly nothing more than a Beta, in the position of Alpha, until my father came back.
“I’m still an Alpha, pup” the wolf snarled, his eyes narrowing down on my own “Stand in or not, Alpha blood runs through my veins, now get out and do something useful until Casey gets back”
I turned on my heels, eager to leave his presence. I wasn’t sure how long I could hold Nikita back before she finally had enough and forced her way through to show him who the real Alpha in the room was.
“Xander” Markus thundered out, his voiced laced with irritation and contempt as he addressed the wolf that still laid belly down in terror from this whole exchange “You brought her here, so it’s your job to keep an eye on her. If she causes any trouble, I'm holding you personally responsible”
The poor warrior whimpered at his Alpha’s command, but scampered up nonetheless and followed behind me as I lifted the tent to leave, a smirk creeping onto my face.
We should use this chance to teach that warrior a lesson for how he has treated us up until now
Nikita purred in the recesses of my mind
Yes, we should
