Chapter 1 — Rejected
Luna had dreamed of finding her mate for eighteen years. She never imagined that finding him would be the moment he broke her heart.
Luna felt it the moment their eyes met across the training yard — a sudden warmth spread through her chest. Alpha Adrian had been sparring with his Beta, but he suddenly stopped moving, and his fist took a hit to the shoulder because he wasn't paying attention anymore. He was staring at her.
Her wolf stirred, and the word came to her before she could process what was happening.
Mate.
Luna could hardly breathe. For eighteen years she had been nobody in this pack — just the daughter of a guard who died before she could remember him. She had never once imagined that the Alpha himself, the man everyone respected and feared a little, could be the person she had been waiting for.
Adrian crossed the yard toward her, and for a moment, hope filled her chest so completely that she forgot to be afraid.
Then she saw the way his jaw tightened, and her stomach began to sink.
"Everyone, stay where you are," he said, his voice carrying the full weight of his authority. Every wolf in the yard froze, and more began to gather, drawn by the tension that had suddenly filled the yard.
"Adrian?" Luna asked softly. "What's wrong?"
He looked at her, and for just a second, something like regret passed through his eyes. But it vanished as quickly as it came.
"I, Alpha Adrian Cole, reject you, Luna Hart, as my mate."
The bond that had just bloomed inside her shattered instantly. Luna gasped and pressed a hand to her chest, the pain so sharp it felt like something inside her had physically broken. She had been given everything for one perfect moment, and now it was gone, torn away in front of the entire pack.
"Why?" she whispered, humiliation burning her cheeks as she felt everyone's eyes on her.
"I have responsibilities to this pack. A mate bond would only complicate things." His voice was calm, almost rehearsed. "I'm sorry. This is for the best."
She wanted to scream at him. She wanted to ask if it was because of her — because she had no title, no standing, nothing to offer a pack like his. But before she could say another word, a scream tore through the air from the eastern watchtower.
Then another.
Chaos broke out instantly. Dark, masked wolves poured over the pack's outer wall, moving with a precision that no ordinary attackers should have had. Pack warriors shifted and rushed to defend their territory, but the invaders slipped past them again and again, as if they weren't interested in fighting the pack at all.
They were looking for something. Or someone.
Luna realized with a chill that their eyes kept finding her.
"Protect the Alpha!" someone shouted, but Adrian was already turning, panic breaking through his usual composure.
"Get her out of here!" he yelled, pointing at Luna — the same woman he had rejected only moments earlier.
She didn't have time to think about that. A masked wolf broke away from the fighting and charged straight at her, and Luna barely managed to throw herself out of the way, her heart pounding so hard she could hear it in her ears.
The wolf turned and came at her again.
And something inside Luna woke up.
It wasn't the mating bond Adrian had just destroyed. Something else woke inside her. She had never felt it before, but somehow, it felt like it had always been there. It rose up all at once, and light — pale and gold — burst outward from her body in a wave that knocked every wolf nearby off their feet.
For one long second, the entire yard went silent.
Then the masked attackers began to run. Not toward her anymore, but away. They kept looking back at her as they ran, fear written across their faces.
Luna sank to her knees, trembling, barely able to process what had just happened to her own body. She could hear Adrian calling her name somewhere behind her, but everything felt distant and unreal.
Then the ground began to shake with the sound of new arrivals.
A second wave of wolves surged over the wall — enormous black wolves, larger than any Luna had ever seen, larger even than Adrian in his shifted form. At the front of them ran a wolf so massive and commanding that some of the fleeing attackers dropped to the ground in submission the instant they saw him.
He shifted mid-stride into a man.
Luna's breath caught. She had heard stories about him her whole life — Lucian Black, the Alpha King, feared by every pack, respected by none who dared cross him. She had never expected to see him standing in her own pack's training yard.
His gray eyes swept over the destruction — the fallen warriors, the fleeing attackers, Adrian standing frozen and useless in the middle of it all. Then his eyes landed on Luna. For a moment, he looked shocked. Then something softer crossed his face — almost like relief.
He walked straight toward her, ignoring Adrian completely.
"This is my territory," Adrian said, stepping forward. "You have no right—"
One look from Lucian silenced him instantly.
Lucian knelt down in front of Luna. His presence was overwhelming, and Luna could feel the weight of his power. But when he gently pulled aside the torn collar of her shirt, where Adrian's rejection mark had left an ugly bruise across her collarbone, his touch was surprisingly careful.
"Don't touch her," Adrian snapped, some old instinct flaring despite everything he'd just said to her.
Lucian didn't even glance at him. "You rejected your own mate," he said quietly. "You don't get to decide who touches her now."
Luna barely registered the words. Something strange was happening beneath her skin, right where Adrian's mark had left its ugly bruise. A pale gold light was rising up from underneath it, slowly forming into a shape — delicate, intricate lines curling into a symbol she had never seen before. Adrian's rejection mark seemed to shrink back from it, as though afraid.
Lucian went completely still. When his eyes finally met hers, they were filled with something Luna couldn't name — grief, relief, and something fierce all tangled together.
"That mark," he said, his voice rough now, all the coldness gone from it. "I know that mark."
"What is it?" Luna's voice shook. "What's happening to me?"
Lucian's hand closed gently around hers, and the moment he touched her, something unfamiliar settled inside her, strangely warm and familiar at the same time.
The entire yard held its breath.
Lucian Black — the most feared man in the world — looked at Luna as though he couldn't believe she was finally standing in front of him.
"I've been searching for you," he said, "for eighteen years."
