Serena Ashford spent three years being the perfect wife to Marcus Cole a man she chose over her family's warnings, her inheritance, and her future. When Marcus hands her divorce papers so he can be with his mistress, Serena signs without tears, without begging, without a single word of protest. What Marcus doesn't know is that the quiet, seemingly ordinary woman he spent three years dismissing is the sole heir to the Ashford Group one of Nigeria's most powerful conglomerates, with fingers in oil, real estate, and banking. Serena had hidden her identity when they met, wanting to be loved for herself. She learned, bitterly, that she wasn't.The day the divorce is finalised, Serena walks out of their three-bedroom apartment and back into the life she left behind boardrooms, private jets, a last name that makes powerful men straighten their spines. And Marcus Cole, mid-level finance manager at a struggling firm, is about to find out that his company's largest investor just became his new boss.He wants her back. PROLOGUE
The pen was heavier than she expected. Or maybe it wasn't the pen. Maybe it was the weight of three years three years of making his coffee exactly right, of being called *paranoid* when she mentioned the perfume she kept smelling on his collar, of small surrenders so quiet she hadn't recognised them as losses until now. The divorce papers lay across the kitchen table the one with the wobbly third leg they'd found at a Brooklyn flea market and never got around to fixing. Four pages. Clean, transactional. Three years reduced to four pages. Marcus stood opposite her, expression carefully neutral. Behind him, Vivienne leaned in the doorway with the posture of a woman claiming territory she considered already won. "It's straightforward," Marcus said. "No shared assets. No claims. Clean break." Serena read every line without rushing. Then she considered, just for a moment, telling him pulling up the Ashford Group's Wall Street Journal profile and placing it on the table between them. Watching the colour leave his face. She pressed the pen to the paper. No. Let him find out on his own. She signed her full name. Not *Serena Cole.* Her real name. The one she'd set aside three years ago like a key beneath a doormat. 'Serena Ashford.' "Thank you," she said, standing. "For what?" "For making this easy." She walked out without looking at Vivienne. In the elevator, she exhaled for what felt like the first time in years. Then she dialled. "Dad. I'm coming home."
