As dawn began to break, Vasili and Grigori took the opportunity to fill up with petrol and have breakfast at one of the few service stations that were open at that time of day. It was Vasili who drove there and the fact is that neither of them were quite sure where they were. Worse still, they hadn’t decided where to go either. The only thing that mattered to them was that they had managed to get out of there alive. The cafeteria at that hour was frequented only by lorry drivers and there weren’t many of them. They ordered the number one breakfast combo from the menu: two fried eggs, pork escalope and fried potatoes, accompanied by coffee.
