Chapter 4: Edwin? You Are…

2002 Words
Lytton family? The people of the Duncan family all looked hesitant, unable to figure things out for a moment. What Lytton family? "Mr. Spender, this Lytton family..." Mr. Duncan smiled slightly, having already understood it from the conversation of the Duncan family descendants earlier. The fact that the Lytton family sent so many expensive medical equipment and medicines showed their status and strength, which was beyond comparison to the Duncan family. However, Mr. Spender just smiled faintly, glanced at Edwin, and said, "I'm just here to deliver something, I don't know anything else." With that, he left the room. For a moment, everyone in the room fell into silence. "Just who is this Lytton family that sent these things? Does anyone here know anyone from the Lytton family?" Mr. Duncan asked. The descendants of the Duncan family all shook their heads. "Grandpa, it couldn't be Edwin, could it?" Woodrow laughed sarcastically with an inscrutable gaze. Edwin? Everyone's gaze shifted towards Edwin, who was standing to the side. Impossible. How could it be him? He was known to be useless, bringing shame to the Duncan family in Ciadeles. How could he have such power? "Woodrow, stop joking. We all know what kind of person Edwin is. He's nothing but useless garbage," Faithe taunted. She looked down on Edwin a lot and didn't know what her daughter saw in him in the first place. "Well, why don't you all find out when a Lytton family appeared in Ciadeles these past few days," Mr. Duncan said. "Lauren, have you hooked up with some rich guy?" Gemma Duncan, the daughter of the third branch, said with a faint smile. She didn't like her cousin, Lauren. Back in the Duncan family, Lauren was favored more than her. As she grew older, Lauren's reputation in Ciadeles became better, earning her the title of Ciadeles' most beautiful goddess, the leader of the Four Beauties of Ciadeles. But all of that ended when she married a useless person. When Gemma said this, everyone in the Duncan family ridiculed Lauren and Edwin. Was there an affair? The strange gaze made Lauren feel uncomfortable. She immediately frowned and said, "Gemma, stop talking nonsense. I don't even know anyone from this Lytton family!" As she said this, she glanced at Edwin beside her. Could it be him? If it was him, why did she suffer for four years? "Alright, enough talking," The old man interjected in the discussion and looked at Edwin with a stern gaze, "Divorce agreement, sign it or not?" "No," Edwin rejected immediately, "I've already borrowed the money, and my bone marrow can be used for Maggie's treatment." Hmph. The old man sneered twice and scolded, "So what if you've borrowed the money? The director of this hospital is my friend. If I say not to use your bone marrow, then it won't be used!" This useless person wanted to use his worthless bone marrow to treat his granddaughter? No way! Upon hearing this, Edwin's heart sank and he said, "Grandpa, Maggie is my daughter, why not use mine?" "Why? It's all because you're a worthless waste, bringing shame to our Duncan family!" Faithe mocked with her arms crossed. If it wasn't for him, her position in the Duncan family wouldn't have declined so much. "Haha, that's right! Edwin, who do you think you are? You're nothing but a dog! If you have the ability, bring the director here!" Woodrow mocked shamelessly, "As long as the director says to use your bone marrow, our Duncan family has no objections, right, Grandpa?" The old man nodded. "That's right, as long as the director of this hospital says to use your bone marrow, I, Hamiltion Duncan, have no objections." Was that possible? Hamiltion must have already given a heads-up. The director, Merlin Cowper, was his good friend. Edwin found it as difficult as ascending to heaven to find a bone marrow match for Maggie! Lauren watched this scene with misty eyes, her gaze filled with resentment as she approached Edwin, slapped him across the face, and scolded, "Edwin, why are you so useless!" Then, she burst into tears, covered her face, and ran out. Edwin's cheek reddened from the slap, and he looked after Lauren, wanting to go after her. But at that moment, two doctors in white coats walked into the hospital room. "Oh, Director Cowper, why have you come? Did you specifically come to see my granddaughter?" Hamiltion exclaimed respectfully upon seeing the person at the door. Though they were referred to as friends, Hamiltion still wanted to show some respect to Director Cowper. Many entrepreneurs and wealthy people in Ciadeles had sought treatment in Merlin's hospital and had dealings with him. He was like a social calling card. Moreover, Merlin also had a good reputation nationwide as a medical expert in treating leukemia. In Ciadeles, eight out of ten people had to show respect to Merlin. In front of such people, even Hamiltion had to be respectful and obsequious. Merlin, about fifty or sixty years old, wore a director's badge on his chest. He glanced at the situation in the sickroom, as if looking for someone, and then smiled at Hamiltion respectfully, "Mr. Duncan, there's something I need to tell you." "Director Cowper, if you have anything, just let the nurse inform me. There's no need for you to come personally," Hamiltion flattered. Merlin smiled and, his gaze already on Edwin, took a few steps forward, shook off Hamiltion's hand, and respectfully said to Edwin, "Mr. Lytton, nice to meet you. I am Merlin Cowper, the director of this hospital." After saying that, he extended his hands. Edwin was not simple at all. Five minutes ago, he received a phone call in his office. It was a phone call from the hospital's behind-the-scenes consortium! They only said one sentence – a distinguished gentleman is in the hospital and you must obey and not defy this gentleman's wishes! And this gentleman was none other than Duncan family's son-in-law, Edwin! The fact that the behind-the-scenes consortium personally called to notify him showed that Edwin was not the weakling that the rumors in the city depicted him as. This scene shocked everyone in the hospital room! Especially Hamiltion, he couldn't believe his own eyes. What was happening? Merlin treated a loser politely, and even extended his hands! "Director Cowper, what are you doing? Why are you being so polite to him?" Hamiltion frowned and skeptically asked. Woodrow also chimed in, "Yes, Director Cowper, Edwin is just a son-in-law of our Duncan family. He doesn't have any skills. You don't need to be nice to him." "That's right, Director Cowper, he is just a poor boy. Why are you being so polite to him?" Faithe added tauntingly, pointing at Edwin. "Edwin, what are you doing? You should greet Director Cowper properly. Why are you waiting for him to shake your hand?" But... Suddenly, Merlin's face turned cold and he shouted, "Enough! How dare you talk to Mr. Lytton like that? What do you mean by loser? Do you all know who Mr. Lytton is..." Cough! Edwin suddenly coughed, interrupting Merlin's words. He reached out his hand, smiling on his face, and held Merlin's hand, respectfully saying, "Director Cowper, how are my daughter's symptoms?" Merlin was taken aback, turning his head and seeing something from Edwin's eyes. He then followed, "Mr. Lytton, rest assured, we will spare no effort in treating your daughter's illness." It seemed that Mr. Lytton didn't want to expose his identity in front of these people. Slap! Suddenly, Faithe slapped away Edwin's hand holding Merlin and scolded, "What are you doing? Director Cowper is not someone you can shake hands with, you worthless person!" Merlin got angry, his eyes wide and glaring at Faithe, this unreasonable middle-aged woman! Edwin shaking hands with him was his greatest honor! This stupid woman probably didn't even know Mr. Lytton's identity! Heh heh. Seeing Merlin's anger, Faithe thought it was because of Edwin, so she quickly said, "Director Cowper, don't be angry. He is just a useless person. There's no need to argue with him." Merlin snorted, turned his head to Hamiltion, and said, "Mr. Duncan, the reason I came here this time is to inform you about Maggie's bone marrow match. With a close relative, it's natural to use the best." Once this statement was made, Hamiltion and the Duncan family couldn't remain calm. "Director Cowper, this...didn't we agree before to use the bone marrow I purchased?" Hamiltion became anxious. Using a close relative meant using Edwin's bone marrow! This was unacceptable, absolutely not! Merlin looked coldly at Hamiltion and said, "This is the hospital's policy, and it's also for the sake of the patient. The chance of rejection is extremely low with a close relative's bone marrow!" Suddenly, Hamiltion's face became unsightly. He furrowed his brows, looked at Edwin, and couldn't understand why Merlin suddenly changed his mind. "Director Cowper, may I have a word with you?" Hamiltion wanted to say something. But Merlin directly ignored him and said, "No need. This matter is settled. Regarding the bone marrow, we will use Mr. Lytton's. Since he is the child's father, you shouldn't obstruct it." Woodrow was displeased with Merlin for not showing respect to his Grandpa. He muttered under his breath, "Damn it! What is he pretending to be? If it's a big deal, we can change hospitals." For a while, the atmosphere in the hospital room quickly cooled down. With a cold look in his eyes, Merlin stared at Woodrow in the crowd. Hamiltion's heart trembled, and he slapped him in the face, rebuking, "Bastard! Who let you be disrespectful to Director Cowper!" Then, he quickly apologized to Merlin, bowing respectfully and saying, "Director Cowper, I'm sorry. My grandson is young and impulsive. Please forgive him." This i***t had offended Merlin. In Ciadeles, which hospital would accept Maggie? Merlin waved his hand, snorted, and then, amidst the shocked gazes of everyone, he smiled and said to Edwin, "Mr. Lytton, I'll take my leave now." Edwin sighed inwardly and nodded. After Merlin left, the people of the Duncan family stared at Edwin, perplexed. "Edwin, what did you do? Merlin helped you!" Woodrow rubbed his face and felt angry. He didn't dare to harbor resentment towards Merlin, so he could only vent his anger on Edwin. But Edwin only said, "Woodrow, arguing with me is pointless. This is his decision. If you have the ability, go talk to him yourself." "You!" Woodrow became furious. Hamiltion shouted, "Enough!" Then, with a cold look, he stared at Edwin and said, "Since it's Director Cowper's decision, I won't stop it. However, don't think that by doing this, I will let Maggie recognize you!" After speaking, Hamiltion left the hospital room with his entourage. After everyone left, Edwin looked at his timid daughter lying in the hospital bed, smiled, walked over, gently patted her little head, and said, "Daddy will cure you." Maggie had been obedient, not making a fuss all this while. At this moment, she directly threw herself into Edwin's arms, crying loudly, and softly calling out, "Daddy, Daddy..." Edwin's heart broke as he listened to these cries of Daddy, his eyes turning red. Shortly after, Edwin received a text message and left the hospital room. The medical equipment and medicine from before had already been packed up. Those expert-level medical staff were also arranged by Merlin in the hospital. Edwin walked out of the hospital and saw Francis, who had been waiting for a long time, as well as the eye-catching Rolls-Royce Phantom. Just as he was about to get into the car, a familiar and suspicious voice sounded from the side. "Edwin? What are you doing here?" Edwin instinctively turned his head and was surprised to see Lauren, with a puzzled expression, staring at him, Francis, and Rolls-Royce beside him. Beside her were her two best friends, equally shocked. Edwin's heart sank, this was bad, he was about to be exposed by Lauren!
