Chapter 5: I Promise You

1597 Words
Edwin looked a little stunned, watching Lauren's unusual gaze lingering on him. "Why are you still here? Who is this old man?" Lauren looked unpleasant. Their relationship was not good, after all, in the past four years, she had endured the contempt and ridicule of others because of him. She had long given up on Edwin. But now, Edwin was standing next to a Rolls-Royce. This... Edwin scratched the back of his head awkwardly, his gaze fell on Francis standing nearby. Francis immediately smiled and said, "Young man, thanks to you for directing me, I'll leave now. Feel free to call me whenever you need anything." After speaking, Francis got into the car. The Rolls-Royce slowly left this place. Edwin also smiled and explained, "That old man didn't know the way, so I showed him the way." Upon hearing this explanation, Lauren didn't suspect anything. It couldn't be possible, right? Could her husband be a hidden second-generation rich kid? Just at this moment, a sharp and unkind voice came, "Lauren, is this your husband?" The speaker was a stylishly dressed woman with wavy hair, and fiery red lips, wearing oversized sunglasses. She had avant-garde clothing, a black tank top, and white ultra-short shorts. Her straight and slender legs reflected a moist white color in the sunlight. Lauren's expression slightly changed, she forced a smile and brushed her hair that was flowing down her ears, and introduced, "Um, his name is Edwin, my..." The word "husband" seemed difficult to utter. The woman crossed her arms and accentuated her full figure in front of her. She snorted and said, "Lauren, you're too casual. You married such an incompetent man. Are all the good men in the country dead?" Simona Morton, the young lady of the Morton family in Ciadeles, had returned from studying abroad four years ago. She wanted to meet Lauren's rumored useless husband, but didn't expect to meet him today. After taking a good look, he was a loser. Lauren didn't explain, she glared at Edwin who seemed indifferent. Why didn't he have any shame? If it wasn't for him, she wouldn't have faced embarrassment in front of her best friend. Edwin smiled and said, "Lauren, I'm going back to work. Maggie's treatment problem has been solved, she’ll be using my bone marrow." "Solved?" Lauren was somewhat surprised. She asked, "How could Grandpa possibly allow you to use your bone marrow?" Edwin explained, "The director of this hospital said they followed the rules and regulations." After speaking, he looked meaningfully at Simona before leaving. Even after Edwin left, Lauren felt a sense of loss. She quickly took her two friends to the hospital to confirm the matter before finally feeling relieved. "Lauren, it's not for me to say, but you should quickly divorce that Edwin. I can introduce you to several wealthy and influential young gentlemen from Ciadeles. If that's not enough, I have friends overseas who are handsome, rich, and skilled." Inside the hospital room, Simona stood on the side, watching Lauren tenderly taking care of Maggie. Another girl, Belle Silas, followed along and agreed, "Yes, Lauren, it's been four years, I feel so sorry for you. You should make a clean break." Lauren paused, looked at the sleeping Maggie on the hospital bed, gently touched her smooth forehead, and said with damp eyes, "I won't divorce him. We have been married for four years, there is no falsehood in our feelings. Besides, he will always be Maggie's father, unless he doesn't want us anymore." Upon hearing this, Simona stomped her feet in anger and said, "Lauren, why are you so foolish? What good is that useless guy?" Lauren turned around, looked at the angry Simona, and said, "I know you mean well, but this is my own business." Simona opened her mouth to say something but held back, saying, "As you wish, but I will do everything in my power to break you two apart! You are my best friend, I won't let you sink into a quagmire!" Lauren didn't say anything. She understood that Simona meant well and truly cared for her. However, there were some things, especially her relationship with Edwin, that confused Lauren as well. In the evening, Edwin came home holding a bag of apples. Before he entered the house, he heard arguing inside. "Lauren, you must listen to your mom. Tomorrow, you must divorce that useless man! Our Duncan family cannot tolerate him!" It was the voice of his mother-in-law, Faithe, sounding very angry. "Just look at him today at the hospital, he embarrassed me so much. It was almost broadcast throughout Ciadeles. You all saw it today, how Edwin treated the old man. Isn't he dragging our family into the fire? In a few days, it's the mid-year summary meeting of the Duncan family. We need to select a new company vice president. At this crucial moment, if Edwin doesn't show respect to the old man, is there any hope for Lauren to be chosen? He must get a divorce!" Faithe was about to explode. She turned away from Jonas Duncan, her husband sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper, and yelled at him. Jonas kept his head down, pretending to read the newspaper, not saying anything. He was a typical henpecked husband, with no position at home, and his wife Faithe took care of everything. Moreover, he was naturally weak-willed and couldn't lift his head in front of Faithe. Seeing that Jonas remained silent, Faithe became even angrier. She walked over, tore the newspaper out of his hands, and scolded, "Look at you, coming home every day just to read the newspaper. How come you don't care at all about our family's matters? Isn't Lauren your daughter?" Jonas reluctantly said, "How could I not care? This matter is not something we can decide. We need Lauren to speak up." Faithe, however, immediately threw a tantrum and said, "I don't care! Our daughter must divorce that useless person. It has been four years, and our family has endured so much ridicule and mockery. Haven't you had enough?" As she spoke, Faithe even shed tears, sitting on the sofa and crying, "Jonas, if you are still a man, you should take charge of this matter! Our daughter has suffered so much, and now Maggie has leukemia. All of this is because of Edwin! She could have married into a wealthy family and we could have enjoyed a comfortable life. Are you willing to watch Lauren exhaust herself like this every day and endure the poking from relatives? If you don't feel sorry for her, I still do!" The Duncan family's main business in Ciadeles is the medicines and medical equipment trade. Lauren did need to go to the factory, the medicines base, and the market every day, which was very tiring. Moreover, because of Edwin, Lauren had a low status in the Duncan family, and she didn't even have a share of the family inheritance when the news was spread. Hearing this, Jonas also fell silent. After all, it was his daughter. Just as he was about to get up, Lauren, who had locked herself in the room, opened the door and came to the living room. She looked seriously at the furious Faithe and the worried Jonas and said, "Dad, Mom, I won't divorce Edwin!" Upon hearing this, Faithe became angry and shouted, "Lauren, what nonsense are you talking? You won't divorce him and still want to spend your life with that useless person?!" "Mom, I'm not talking nonsense. I love Edwin. Even though I have been criticized and mocked by relatives and friends for the past four years because of him, he is still my husband and Maggie's father!" "For the past four years, he has silently stayed in this home without a single complaint." "You all look down on him, Grandpa looks down on him, everyone looks down on him, but I won't!" Edwin, standing at the door, took a deep breath and his eyes became moist as he looked up at the sky. He smiled. After four years, it turned out she had always loved him, even though he had caused her endless pain. Why was she so foolish? Once he promised her a life of prosperity, but now it seemed that everything was empty. Edwin clenched his fist, a serious look in his eyes, "Lauren, believe me, my promise to you will never change. You will become the happiest woman in this world!" In the living room, Lauren was already in tears, looking at Faithe and Jonas, and said, "Mom, Dad, you don't understand. I love him, and I have been waiting for him, waiting for him to proudly tell everyone that he is Maggie's father and my husband..." There was silence in the room. Although Faithe still had resentment on her face, she couldn't say anything after hearing Lauren's words. At this moment, Edwin pushed open the door, stood at the entrance, and a warm smile appeared on his lips as he looked at Lauren, who was filled with tears. He walked up to her, gently wiping away the tears from the corners of her eyes. "Edwin, can you promise me? For me and Maggie." "I don't want to endure the mockery anymore. I don't want Maggie to call you uncle in front of others. I want everyone to know that you are Maggie's father and my husband, not a useless person." Lauren's eyes were reddened, filled with mist. "I promise you." Edwin sincerely said, looking at Lauren with tenderness, then turned and left.
