Arranged Marriage
Licia's POV I ran home, cursing as the heavy rain beat down on my head, the sky rumbling as if mocking me. "f**k you all!" I yelled through tears, frantically flagging down a taxi. But it seemed the universe was against me, as none seemed to notice my desperate moves. How dare he do this to me? I had worked with him for three years without making a single mistake, and now he fired me just because I refused his s****l demands. If someone had told me four hours ago that I would be in this situation, fired, drunk, and late for home, I wouldn't have believed it. I replayed the events between my boss and me in my mind, and all I felt was anger. "You're fired," those words still echoed in my head. There were no taxis in sight, and the subway was closed. I had no hope of catching a ride. It was already 10 pm, and I knew I would face the consequences when I got home. Despite being 22, I was still treated like a child, locked up and restricted. I wiped away the tears threatening to escape my eyes and focused on getting home. My heart raced as I walked down the empty street, the soles of my shoes slapping against the pavement. The streetlamps flickered and sputtered, casting shadows across the pavement. A week ago, a young woman had disappeared from this street, and her body was never found. According to the cops, the trails led to the Lycan king, although nobody knew who he was. He seemed like a ghost. But I had heard that a truce was to be established, and every 5 decades, he visited the city to find a human bride. The Lycan king was a mere legend to me, and his visit for a bride was a tale, but the government authorities seemed to be scared of something coming, there had been whispers. I never believed he existed. Yet, an overwhelming fear crept over me as I continued walking, one foot in front of the other, trying to reach home as quickly as possible. As I arrived at my house, I noticed a familiar car parked outside the gate, it was Femi, my boyfriend. "What is he doing here?" I pondered, hurrying into the compound without realizing the presence of three black Rolls Royce cars parked in the garage. What was wrong? Femi didn't know the address to my house, so who had given it to him? Why was he here at this late hour? Various thoughts raced through my mind as I failed to notice Chloe and Mom waiting at the door. "Where were you coming from, you flirt?" Mom suddenly said, pulling my hair, as she hit me across the cheek. "I... Well, the subway had closed, and there were no available taxis, so I walked home," I stuttered, my wet clothes dripping water as I held my cheek, staring at her. "You liar! You were fired, right? You were trying to seduce your boss and got yourself fired," Chloe accused, catching me off guard. "What? That's not what happened... How did you know I was fired?" I asked, looking around the house, wondering why they weren't raising their voices at me as they usually did. "Where's Femi? I saw his car parked outside," I said looking around the hallway, nervously biting my nails as I noticed the exchange of smiles between Chloe and Mom. "You mean the car you bought for him, while you gave Mum only a little from your salary? Well, did you think we would never get to meet him?" Chloe asked, mockery laced in her voice as anger rose within me. What had they done to the only person who had ever supported and stood by me? "Unfortunately, we didn't say anything to him. The news reached him before we could say a word, and he came here to break up with your cheating ass," Chloe added. I stood there in shock, trying to process the news, wondering if they were intentionally trying to hurt me. Femi would never believe a random rumor about me, he knew how much I loved him. Soon, my mom and Chloe turned to leave, leaving me even more perplexed. What was happening now? Why were they leaving without giving me a proper scolding? "If I were you, I'd return to my room… you wouldn't want him to see you before the wedding night," Chloe advised, snorting as she left while throwing a pillow onto my face, leaving me confused as I hurried to change into more comfortable clothes. Once I had settled in, I decided to call Femi while nervously tapping my legs. I anxiously dialed his number, my heart pounding as the phone rang. After several rings, he finally answered. "Femi, it's me," I said, my voice shaking. "Please tell me what's happening. Did you come to break up with me?" There was a long pause before he spoke as I cried, my heart pounding, hoping he would deny it and say that he had been busy. But his response sent chills down my spine. "I don't think I can continue this relationship," he sighed. "I'm also fed up with you." “You know I would never do anything to hurt you. I didn't cheat..." My voice trailed off as I heard muffled voices in the background on Femi's end. It sounded like a lady's voice. "Your looks alone... Let's not start with that, but do you think I'd leave my mate, and settle for a fat low-life human b***h?" He yelled at the other end of the phone while I listened, Dumbfounded at his outbursts. "Mate? Are you a werewolf? You have a girlfriend?" Those were the only words that left my lips. Tears streamed down my face as I clutched the phone, my heart shattering. "Was it all just a facade?" I whispered, my voice trembling with disbelief. “Whatever you say to me doesn't matter, I was with you because of what you could offer." He said, and I could sense pride in his tone. “I love you,” I said, not believing his words. He was silent as only my ragged breathing sounded, with the night crickets. I had hope, maybe, just maybe he was giving it a thought. "Please, don't leave me... I need you, Femi. I'll do anything, I'll work extra," I whispered, but rather than a reply, he snorted with laughter. "You're pathetic," he spat. "You're fat, you're dirty, and you're worth nothing to me. I only stuck around for your money, and now I'm done, I reject you, pathetic Licia" And with that, he hung up. "Femi? Are you still there?" I asked nervously. Just then, the door to my bedroom swung open loudly. I turned to see Chloe standing there with a smug look. "Well? Did you get your explanation?" she sneered. Before I could reply, she grabbed the phone and smashed it. "Leave him alone, it's over between you two now!" she shouted. With that, she stormed out and slammed the door behind her. I sat on my bed in stunned silence, trying to process what just happened. She soon returned with an unfamiliar woman. "Is she the one?" The lady asked, mouth agape as she stared at me. "She is," Chloe responded, rather uneasy. "I don't think the Lycan Alpha would like her, she's too fat." The lady blurted out, not minding how I felt. "You don't have an option, he must take a bride from my family and I'm four months pregnant, she's the only one left, moreover she's his mate and I can assure you, she's a virgin, I think he would love her." Chloe blurted when Mum walked in with a gown. "Try this on." Mother said, throwing me a white wedding gown. It was really beautiful, this was the first time I'd be getting a dress from her. "What's going on, who's getting married?" I asked, looking around the room. "She doesn't know?" The lady asked again, with concern on her face. "We didn't have the time to tell her,” Mum said as the room became heated. "Tell me what exactly? Can someone just answer me," I yelled, getting their attention. "You're getting married to the Lycan, he wants you." The lady said as I stared in utmost disbelief. "What?"
