chapter 1 The Beginning
Chapter 1: The Beginning
The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a golden hue over the dusty landscape of Shivnagar, a small, forgotten village tucked away in the heart of India. The village was a place where time seemed to stand still, where the old ways clung fiercely to life despite the relentless march of progress in the world beyond. In Shivnagar, traditions were sacrosanct, and the notion of change was as alien as the city lights that could only be imagined in the stories whispered by the few who had ventured beyond the village's borders.
In one of the many modest huts, a young girl named Divya sat cross-legged on the floor, her hands busy weaving a straw mat. Her fingers moved with practiced ease, but her mind was elsewhere, filled with thoughts that had no place in her world. Divya was only ten, but she already knew what her future held—or rather, what it lacked. Girls like her were destined for early marriage, motherhood, and a life of quiet submission. Education was a distant dream, reserved for the boys, who were seen as the future of the village.
But Divya was different. She had always been different, though she could never explain why. She felt a burning curiosity about the world, a desire to learn and to understand the mysteries that lay beyond the boundaries of her small village. Her heart longed for something more than the life that had been laid out for her by tradition and circumstance.
As the sun sank lower, Divya's mother, Kamla, entered the hut, her face etched with the weariness of years spent toiling in the fields. She paused at the sight of her daughter lost in thought, her hands idle on the half-finished mat.
"Divya," Kamla's voice was gentle but firm. "What are you thinking about, child? The mat won't weave itself."
Divya looked up, startled out of her reverie. "I'm sorry, Maa," she said, her hands resuming their work. But her thoughts lingered on the forbidden dreams that had been occupying her mind.
Kamla sighed and sat down beside her daughter. She knew that Divya was different, that she had a spark in her that set her apart from the other children in the village. But she also knew that in a place like Shivnagar, that spark was dangerous. It was better to snuff it out early than to let it burn and consume her daughter in a fire of unfulfilled dreams.
"Divya," Kamla began cautiously, "you know our way of life here. You are growing up, and soon, your father will find you a good husband. You'll have your own family to take care of. That's how it is for us."
Divya nodded, though her heart sank at the thought. "I know, Maa," she whispered, not trusting herself to say more.
But Kamla could see the struggle in her daughter's eyes. She took Divya's hands in her own, forcing her to meet her gaze. "Listen to me, child," she said, her voice a mixture of love and resignation. "This is our life. It's not an easy one, but it's what we know. I don't want you to fill your head with ideas that will only bring you pain."
Divya bit her lip, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill. She didn't want to disappoint her mother, but how could she silence the voice inside her that screamed for something more?
