Chapter 1 - The stakeout
“How long do we have to wait out here?” I asked my partner, sitting next to me in our patrol car. “I know this is your first stakeout, but even you should know that you need to be quiet.” My partner, Dan, said back to me. “I kinda have to go to the bathroom,” I said, obviously uncomfortable. “Of course you do, didn’t I tell you to not drink anything?” Dan did say this, he has been doing this for a lot longer than I have. When I was assigned to be his partner, he was very transparent that he was not happy. “I know and I am sorry, but I really have to go.” I insisted. “Fine, there is probably a bathroom in that gas station, over there.” Dan pointed to a gas station down the street. Dan and I were staking out a factory that allegedly was housing a fugitive, but I think they just wanted me out of the station. No one seems to like me there. I hopped out of the car and awkwardly ran down the street, to the gas station. I went to the employee working and asked if they had a bathroom. They did but one of those which you had to have a key to. I scurried back to the car trying to be quiet, but I apparently was not quiet, since Dan was aggravated when I got back. “Why are you so frustrated?” I asked him. “The station called and said that their intel was false and that we should get back.” glowering, “So we did this for no reason”. Well, that was great, at least I don’t have to be stuck in a hot car, on a 100 °F Florida day (37.7778 °C). Why does Florida have to be so hot? I only moved here because of this job I moved from Maine, so it is quite the adjustment. I was thinking about why my co-workers don’t like me that much, and I think it’s because I am young. Which I understand, I guess. When we got back I tried to sit down at my desk, but one of my only friends at the station was there instead. Not everyone dislikes me, but most do. Most people find me eccentric. “What’s up Nora?” Owen chuckled. Owen was one of my friends that I brought with me from Maine. We grew up together, we graduated from the police academy together, and we got the same job offer. “What are you doing Owen?” I crossed my arms. “Nothing” he answered, I rolled my eyes and got ready to go back home. I packed my stuff back into my backpack and drove back to my house. I decided to check my emails on my laptop. I got an email from someone that was anonymous. I opened the email, and there was an address and phone number. I closed the email and called the phone number, someone immediately answered. “Is this Nora?” “Yes, yes it is” “Can you come to the address we sent you tomorrow?” “I guess so,” and they hung up the phone.
