I can feel Elliott’s gaze heavy on me as my voice trails away. My chest heaves, aching with the effort of fighting back tears. The pain and the betrayal hits me all over again, crashing into me with a force so fresh it feels as though it happened yesterday, not nearly ten years ago. ‘Oh Elijah,’ Elliott sighs heavily. I grip my coffee mug tighter in my hands, the heat biting into my palms. ‘I don’t . . . I can’t . . .’ my brother mutters, shaking his head, ‘. . . is that what you think happened that night?’ My head snaps up. I found my brother staring at me with a mixture of pain and sympathy warring on his face. ‘I don’t think, I know’ I reply gruffly, my throat constricting. ‘I was standing right there when it happened.
