The Call That Changed Everything
People say prison only steals time from the person behind the bars.
They’re wrong.
It steals from the people waiting too.
It steals birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, late-night dinners, Sunday mornings, and the simple luxury of reaching over in the middle of the night to hold the person you love.
If someone had told me a year ago that I’d fall in love with a man serving a long prison sentence, I would’ve laughed in their face.
I had a career I loved, bills to pay, people depending on me, and enough responsibilities to keep me busy for a lifetime. Love wasn’t on my list of priorities. I had convinced myself that chapter of my life had already been written.
Then my phone rang.
One call.
One familiar voice.
One conversation that changed everything.
His voice wasn’t what I remembered. It was deeper, calmer, carrying a weight that only time and regret could create.
“Alina?”
My heart hesitated before my mouth did.
“Malik?”
A quiet chuckle escaped him.
“I didn’t think you’d answer.”
“I almost didn’t.”
There was a long silence.
Not the uncomfortable kind.
The kind where two people realize years have passed, but somehow the connection is still there, waiting patiently beneath the surface.
We talked for nearly an hour.
About our childhood.
About life.
About mistakes.
About the dreams we’d both buried.
Not once did he ask me for money.
Not once did he make excuses for where he was.
He simply owned his past.
And somehow…
That honesty was more attractive than any smooth-talking man I’d met on the outside.
Days turned into weeks.
Weeks turned into months.
Phone calls became part of my routine.
I learned the sound of the automated prison recording before every call.
I memorized his inmate number.
I counted minutes instead of hours.
Without realizing it…
My life slowly began revolving around someone I couldn’t touch.
Everyone warned me.
“You deserve better.”
“He’s only using you.”
“Find somebody who’s free.”
Maybe they were right.
Or maybe they had never experienced the kind of connection that refuses to make sense.
Because love doesn’t always arrive wrapped in perfect timing.
Sometimes…
It finds you behind razor wire.
And before you know it…
You’re the one serving the sentence.
