::Adam's POV::
I hated his guts, just looking at him made me sick!
Derrick wore that cocky grin he always had. How did I not know that he would betray Sarah like that. She had already gone through far too much than she would ever deserve. She had been there for him, always been 100% supportive of his ideals and goals.
So why? Why here, why now?
''You bastard!'' I scowled, ''Had you always felt this way towards her?''
I didn't seek an answer from this liar.
''You wouldn't know because you're gay.'' he frowned.
''It didn't matter if I was gay or not, we know what she has gone through. You're nothing but evil for adding on to her trauma.'' I tried to keep myself upright.
My leg was supporting my heavy upper body, my wolf was fierce, but he knew that we wouldn't stand a chance in this condition against one of the pack's strongest warriors. Derrick had denied the Beta position despite his eligibility for the role.
He had always been stronger, always been above me, I admit that. But, the crime he committed was beyond me forgiving him.
He hurt MY best friend!
''Were you never truly happy with Lily?'' I shrugged a cold glare at him.
He gulped down what seemed to be a hint that my words jabbed at him.
''Keep her out of this.'' he warned with vocal snarls.
His temper was flaring as per usual, but I never was afraid of it. But based on him ratting himself out I assumed that she did not know this little plan of his.
Lily was at work most of the time. She would come home and play the double role of being the man and woman of the house. Despite her coming home from work she always wore a smile and attended to Derrick's every need.
They seemed so happy together, but obviously one person wore the fake smile.
It disheartened me to find out that he held a soft spot for Sarah, she wasn't meant to be his. He needed to grow up.
''We will never forgive you!'' I promised.
''Like I ever needed your opinion.'' Derrick flashed and appeared at my side in a split second.
His confidence and strength were clearly visible, as he jabbed on my rib cage.
My body stumbled backwards and I was forced to apply pressure onto the leg I was bracing myself on. The pulse of pain I received was unbearable, but I knew I had to be strong for Sarah.
''You hit like a bitch.'' was all I could taunt. But, my body did not deny the fact that it hurt at extreme levels.
''I'm going to make you my b***h!'' he winded an arm further back and launched it straight to my chest.
I couldn't dodge it!
My lungs felt as if they were constricted and lost all its air in an instant! I coughed out more blood and this seemed to fuel the traitor's ego.
''Always second to me. That's what you'll always be!'' he definitely sounded redundant.
''I'll always be her 1st best friend and her number one family.'' I really didn't know when to shut up.
''I could have been her 1st mate if she wasn't so f*****g selfish!'' he uppercut me, but I was able to slightly brush it off by diverting my chin away by a few centimeters.
''You can't have both Lily and Sarah. You dumbass!'' and my peripheral caught such luck.
''I could if I wanted to!'' he blurted out.
My vision shifted to where my peripheral's focus was at, a totally shocked woman stood there speechless at what he had just annoinced.
''Lily-,'' was all he could mutter.
''What's... what's going on here Derrick?'' she didn't have those calm loving eyes. Her face wore the expression of confusion, ''Why are you hitting Adam? Where's Sarah!'' her tone firmed at the last word.
''I- I can explain. It's not what it looks like!''
Oh but it always was what it looked like.
I didn't want to witness the sadness on her face. But I already could tell by the whimpering Derrick, that she was upset.
''You were in love with Sarah?'' she shook her head while slowly backing away.
''It doesn't matter anymore...'' he tried to soothe his mate.
''Doesn't matter? It always mattered! To think I spent my life faithfully and devoted to you only for you to have thoughts for someone else. And Sarah at that!'' her voice started to sound angry.
''No- please Lily.'' he begged. Despite his 2nd obsession to Sarah he knew Lily's mood was his number one priority.
''I'm not okay with this. I'm not okay with this at all!'' she stomped one foot into the ground while pumping tears, ''Why would you do this? Why?!'' again the voice that demanded rather than asked.
His wolf's pride was definitely taking a toll, he winced at her sharp words, ''I- I couldn't help it. It's impossible for me to explain to y-''.
''We are over.'' she sobbed.
The air fell silent, the wind breezed through gently as the reality fell onto Derrick.
''N-no,'' Derrick was on his knees, ''You're... you're my mate. You can't hate me no matter what I do?'' his question seemed to be directed personally.
''I would never allow you to hurt Sarah. She had never done any of us wrong. Why did you choose to betray her. Betray ME!'' Lily was in full throttle now.
I was regaining my heart beat pattern, but I was still too injured to make a move. I guess Lily could buy me some time. The fact that she would choose anyone over her mate should have caused great agony to her wolf as well.
But she stood there. Strong with cold tears flowing into the wind.
Derrick huffed, desperate to win back his mate's trust, ''Baby... I...''
''Betrayed me!'' she repeated.
''YOU!'' he refocused on me, ''You knew she was coming here!''
''No I didn't, but you forgot the one thing you cannot hide from me. And that's your mind link. I could hear your thoughts a mile away. I wanted to not believe it. But it seemed like it is valid!'' Lily slowly turn away.
''We are done Derrick.'' she then mumbled, ''I no longer love you.''
His eyes widened, she had never said anything so cold to him before. And I was sure it stung more than Sarah's rejection. Serves him f*****g right.
''N-no.'' he then stood upright, ''You're mine and always will be.''
''f**k off.'' Lily growled, ''You lost me.''
''You don't get to f*****g tell me what to do.'' his tone was now menacing.
His body began to excrete his wolf's aura, ''You don't get to decide. Just like how you always been. You're not going to change. You will always be MINE!''
Where did the puppy lover boy go? He sounded like he was losing the already loose screws in his head. He sounded like he was threatening his own mate!
That was something I would never do. Ever!
Lily stood her ground, ''We may have bonded, and it may be too late to reject you. If I knew who you truly were I would have done the same thing Sarah did.''
That triggered him. He leaped and landed on top of Lily.
I tried to rush over, but my body didn't allow me. I cursed myself for being useless. But as I saw him mounting her, her expression stayed firm. Her eyes were indeed heart broken, her lips no longer wanted to speak highly of him. I am damn sure she was becoming numb from all the pain she hadn't noticed she carried.
''No one will ever have you. You will always belong to me!'' he lifted his arm into the air, about to strike.
''Nooooooo!'' I gasped, I looked once again helplessly at Lily, who seemed to accept her fate.
All of a sudden I heard a loud bang!
It was a gun!
Then my vision cleared as it entered farsighted mode. Along the door frames of the entrance, the Beta of the Crimson Red Pack leaned against the ledges.
I traced where he aimed at and it was a direct hit to Derrick's chest.
The blood spread onto his shirt, the heart being its origin. He just stayed there, frozen, bleeding out.
The droplets soaked through and landed along the soft cheeks of Lily.
''I will never belong to you.'' she whispered, ''Because you've never truly belonged to me.''
Derrick's body fell to the side with a thud. His aura depleted into the air, and his body ran cold.
I saw Lily sit up and began to cry onto her folded knees. I dragged my body towards her and sat down next to her.
''What did I do to deserve this?'' she sobbed, ''I thought we were all happy!''
I chose to stay silent. Despite her decision it was very apparent that she was suffering the lost of the mate bond now. It wouldn't be wise to debate or instigate the matter further.
''I'm sorry Adam.'' she apologized, ''I didn't know!''
''Don't apologize,'' I reassured her, ''It's not any of our faults.''
''I don't condone anyone hitting a woman.'' Damien grunted as he offered her a helping hand.
She slowly accepted and took one last look at her biggest regret. She turned away, and thanked him for his help.
''He hurt my luna. Just know I was just doing my job.'' Damien's voice was cold, but I understood.
I felt totally useless. I always had been useless, back then, and now! Why did Stella entrust me to protect her, when clearly I've failed. I couldn't avenge Gilbert's death. I was once again being rescued by this man. He fought my battles effortlessly while I am beaten to a pulp. I really began to feel like I was 2nd to Derrick.
''Like you said.'' he referred to me, ''It's not any of your faults.''
''What are we going to do now? Where is Sarah?'' I looked around and realized she wasn't with him.
''I'll be heading back now, my luna should be back at the pack hospital by now. Farewell.'' he bowed and turned his back.
''I'm coming with you!'' I declared.
''Isn't this your home?'' he asked over his shoulder.
''Home was wherever Gilbert was, but now home is wherever Sarah will be.'' I couldn't fathom the amount of corniness from that sentence!
''If we were meant to stay in one place...'' he began to walk away, ''We would have roots and not feet.''
My eyes lit up at that response. I carried my weight and decided to follow him back.
''Lily, are you comi-,'' my words cut off as I saw Lily bent over Derrick's body. She was clearly mourning her loss.
I looked back at Damien, he did not look like he was going to stop for anyone.
I looked one last glance at her, the totally broken she wolf. The perfect mate, the perfect hard working woman, yet not enough for her lover. That killed me inside, now she was going to suffer the pain I will always feel.
