Chapter: 1: Prologue
Lucien
Buildings were on fire and the destruction was massive.
I headed straight for my palace. The scene before me was devastating. A trail of decapitated bodies littered the palace floors, blood soaking into the ruined stone. The walls were damaged, now bearing brutal scars of war and worst of all was the total silence.
A suffocating, deafening silence.
Alice
Fear washed over me at the thought of losing Alice, the horror of seeing her dead body.
Today was our wedding anniversary and I’d promised Alice that I’d be back in time for our celebration but then this war started and things trailed off in the wrong direction.
I needed her, I needed to see Alice.
I ran through the corridors ignoring the burning in my lungs and headed straight for her chambers making sure to confirm she wasn’t any of the corpses. And in my search, that was when.
I heard it.
Music
Slow and utterly misplaced in the chaos of war. It was coming from the back garden of my palace.
Dread crept up my spine as I followed the melody, my steps slowing down as I walked there trying to figure out what was going on. The music was coming from the glass greenhouse. The warm glow of the setting sun filtered through, casting a golden haze over the scene inside.
And there I saw her.
Alice
She wasn’t in the white ball gown I had bought for her. Instead, she wore a black one—elegant, flowing, breathtaking. But it wasn’t the dress that shattered me.
It was who she was with.
Prince Kendrick.
The enemy.
They moved to the music in a perfect, intimate dance, her body pressed against him as if they were one. His hands held her waist with a familiarity that should have been mine.
I had planned out today with her to every detail. It was going to be about us. “We were perfect,” the words kept ringing in my head.
Now seeing her looking beautiful and dancing in the sunset with another man boiled me over. I couldn’t accept it.
She’s supposed to be mine, she was always mine.
SHE CAN ONLY BE MINE
My hands fisted, rage burning through me, but beneath it, the pain was unbearable. This hurt more than her death ever could. Because if she had died, at least she would have still been mine.
Did he force her to do this?
NO, she looked happy
She was smiling
The kind of smile I hadn’t seen on her face in a long time.
Something in me cracked. Like a blade plunging into my chest and twisting cruelly. My breath caught, my fist clenched so tight that my nails dug into my skin drawing blood.
Kendrick had now noticed my presence, grinning at me, he wasn’t in the slightest phased by my presence.
Locking his gaze onto Alice as if she were his world.
“I promised to burn this kingdom down for you and I kept my word,” he said placing a kiss on Alice's hands.
