Chapter 2

825 Words
I stared at my phone screen in disbelief. 'This was Claire's idea of "testing" my boyfriend?' 'She wasn't testing him at all. She was dragging my name through the mud.' I took a few deep breaths, forced my trembling hands to steady, and quickly typed a reply. Conrad: What are you talking about? What's wrong with my girlfriend? Claire responded almost immediately. Claire: She's been lying to you. Don't be fooled by that innocent act. Back in college, she was a total slut. Everyone knew she dated several guys at the same time. Her reputation was already ruined back then. Claire: She even slept with international students just for the excitement. Plenty of people saw her checking into hotels with several of them. Claire: She also had a serious gynecological disease. She even has some kind of condition down there. It was disgusting, and it took a long time for her to get treated. Claire: I know you're about to marry her, but I can't just stand by and watch a good man like you get deceived by someone like that. Immediately afterward, she flooded the chat with kiss emojis. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. This was my so-called best friend. Pretending she was looking out for Conrad while spreading the cruelest lies imaginable about me behind my back. Anger surged through me, but I forced myself to stay calm and typed another reply. Conrad: Do you have any proof? Don't make accusations without evidence. Claire replied without missing a beat. Claire: I have photos from her college days and screenshots of her chats. Want to see them? 'How was that even possible?' Before I could ask another question, she sent a flood of screenshots and photos. I opened them one by one. My heart sank. At first glance, they looked authentic. But after looking more closely, I realized the chat logs had been selectively edited and pieced together. Most of them were nothing more than random conversations with my profile picture pasted onto someone else's account. As for the so-called incriminating photos, they were simply group pictures taken during my university's international exchange program. They had been completely twisted out of context. Combined with Claire's detailed narration, complete with matching dates and locations, almost anyone would believe her. After all, the "evidence" looked convincing enough. The fury boiling inside me slowly gave way to overwhelming disappointment. 'I was a fool all along.' I'd always treated Claire like family. Whenever something good happened to me, she was the first person I wanted to tell. No matter what happened, I always stood by her side without hesitation. 'Why?' I thought 'Why would she do this to me?' The answer came almost immediately. After giving "Conrad" a few minutes to process everything she'd sent, Claire messaged him again. Claire: I know both you and your girlfriend. I know all of her secrets, so I understand how you must be feeling right now. Claire: A woman like her doesn't deserve someone like you. You've treated her so well, but she doesn't appreciate any of it. Then her tone changed completely. Claire: What about me? I've been paying attention to you for a long time. It breaks my heart to see you treated this way. Claire: If I had a boyfriend as amazing as you, I'd never betray him, no matter what. I'd treasure him for the rest of my life. I let out a bitter laugh. 'So this was her real goal.' Conrad had been right from the very beginning. Claire had never intended to test him. She was trying to steal him. As if afraid "Conrad" still wasn't interested, she sent several more revealing photos of herself. None of them showed her face. They focused only on her low-cut tops, bare legs, and suggestive poses. Then she added another message. Claire: I know you're upset. Come meet me and clear your head. Don't waste another second thinking about that cheating b***h. Conrad noticed my clenched jaw and the anger written all over my face. He gently took my phone from my hand, then raised one hand with a smile as if taking an oath. "I wouldn't even look twice at someone like Claire. You're the only woman I love, Sienna." He gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. "So don't waste your energy getting angry over someone like her, okay? "Now that we know who she really is, we can just cut ties with her. It's not worth letting someone like that ruin your mood." A cold smile tugged at the corners of my lips. I patted his arm. "You think I'm just going to let her walk away after everything she's done?" I lowered my eyes and thought for a moment before typing another reply. Conrad: Who are you? Why should I believe anything a complete stranger says? A notification sounded almost instantly. Claire: You'll find out when we meet. It'll be a wonderful surprise.
