Chapter 11There were sounds. They haunted Colin’s dreams. They pulled him out of his sleep; whenever he could manage to get any sort of sleep. Beep, beep, beep. No matter how often he checked the machines hooked up to Ma, Colin was convinced he’d done something wrong. Darcie doubled, even triple checked for him. Told him all was well, but Colin was sure he’d only sped up Ma’s death. Her skin was always cold. Icy. Her hands had no strength left to them. None. That’s what scared him most. Those hands had already succumbed to death. Hands that cared for him, cleaned him, held him, soothed him, wiped tears from his eyes—they were gone. They couldn’t even wrap around his fingers anymore.
