Chapter 1: The Ceremony of Fate
The moon hung low, fat and full, casting a silvery glow across the gathered wolves of Moonclaw Pack. The sacred glade was alive with anticipation—embers flickered in braziers, drums pounded like heartbeats, and an ancient chant drifted on the wind. Tonight was the Mate Ceremony. Tonight, fates would be revealed. Serena Evernight stood quietly at the edge of the gathering, her fingers clenched tightly around the woven edge of her ceremonial cloak. The ivory fur lining felt foreign against her skin, a poor disguise for the trembling beneath. She didn’t belong here—not among Alphas, warriors, and betas brimming with pride and ambition. She was just a healer. An omega. Invisible in the shadows. But the Moon Goddess didn’t care for rank or bloodlines. Fated mates were chosen by the stars. And Serena could feel it—deep in her bones, in the thrum of her wolf’s restless pacing—tonight would change everything. Her gaze shifted across the clearing to the raised stone dais, where Alpha Kael, heir of Moonclaw, stood like a carved statue. Broad shoulders, silver-streaked black hair, and eyes like cold steel. He was a vision of power and control—untouchable, unreachable. Yet for weeks now, every time Serena passed him, her heart would trip, and her wolf would whimper beneath her skin. He’s the one, her wolf whispered again. She dared not believe it. Elder Mathis stepped forward, his voice booming through the glade. “The Moon has risen! The bonds shall be revealed!” A ripple passed through the crowd. One by one, wolves stepped into the clearing, hands outstretched, eyes closed. If the bond was meant to be, a golden thread—visible only to the mated pair—would shimmer between them. Serena watched as couples gasped, embraced, wept. Joy and heartbreak painted the night in equal measure. Then her name was called. “Serena Evernight,” the Elder intoned, “step forward.” Her knees almost gave way. She felt every eye turn to her, most with confusion, some with amusement. An omega? Here? She walked slowly to the center, forcing her breaths to stay even. Then— “Alpha Kael of Moonclaw.” Gasps broke the air. Even Kael stiffened where he stood. His eyes locked onto hers. Serena’s breath caught. A shimmering gold thread sparked between them—bright and unbreakable. He’s my mate. The moment suspended in time. Her heart soared, her wolf howled with joy, and tears blurred her vision. Kael stepped forward. And then— He laughed. The sound was sharp, cruel. "No." The thread snapped like breaking glass. “No?” Elder Mathis blinked. “Alpha Kael—” “I reject this bond.” Kael’s voice was ice. “I reject her. The Moon must have erred.” Serena’s heart stopped. Pain lanced through her chest, sharp and immediate. Her wolf whimpered, confused. The rejection seared across the bond like fire. “But the bond—” the Elder tried. “I will not be mated to an omega healer,” Kael sneered. “I need a Luna. A queen, not a burden.” The crowd murmured in shock. “Let me choose again.” Kael turned away from her as if she were nothing. Serena stood frozen. Numb. And then Calista stepped forward, smiling like a predator. Her red dress hugged her curves, her golden hair gleamed like flame. “I accept the Luna mark,” she purred. “If you’ll have me.” Kael didn’t hesitate. “I accept you.” He leaned down and marked her on the neck—blood blooming where his teeth broke skin. The crowd erupted. Cheers and howls filled the air. Serena fell to her knees. The pain was unbearable. Her bond had been shattered, her soul rejected. No one came to help her. No one even looked her way. She stumbled to her feet and fled, clutching her chest as the tears finally fell. --- The forest was dark and endless. Branches tore at her skin, roots threatened to trip her, but she didn’t stop running. Let him have her. Let them all laugh. She wanted nothing from any of them. Nothing from fate. Nothing from the Moon Goddess. Lightning split the sky. Rain poured down in sheets. And then—howls. She skidded to a stop. Shapes moved in the trees—eyes gleamed red. Rogues. She backed up, her breath ragged. Five, maybe six of them. Snarling, circling. “Leave me alone,” she whispered, her voice shaking. One lunged. She screamed—raising her arms, expecting pain, death— And then a black blur tore through the night. Flesh ripped. Bones cracked. A monstrous Lycan—a creature larger than any wolf she had seen—ripped through the rogues like paper. His eyes glowed gold, and when the last rogue fled, he turned toward her. Serena stared, frozen. He shifted. One moment a beast, the next, a man—tall, bare-chested, covered in blood and shadow. He had black hair, stubble on his chiseled jaw, and eyes like burning amber. “Who… who are you?” she whispered. The man crouched before her, his voice low, rich, and final. “Lucien Thorne. King of Lycans.” He reached for her, fingers brushing her wet cheek. “You are mine.” And Serena Ever night collapsed into darkness. ——
