The stranger in the storm
The wind howled like a wounded animal, tearing through the village of Ashenvale with relentless fury. The once-peaceful hamlet, nestled at the edge of the Emberwood Forest, was shrouded in sheets of rain so heavy that even the lanterns lining the cobblestone streets flickered and died. Lina Greyhart pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders, her heart pounding with unease. She had grown up hearing the stories—of shadowed travelers appearing in the storm, heralding ruin. Most dismissed them as tales to frighten children, but tonight, the storm felt… alive. A c***k of thunder split the sky, illuminating a figure in the distance. They moved slowly, almost painfully, through the deluge. A sword hung at their side, its hilt glinting with an eerie red light. Lina froze. She wanted to call out, but her voice caught in her throat. The figure raised their head, their face obscured by a hood, but even from a distance, Lina felt the weight of their gaze. “Who’s there?” she finally managed to shout, though her voice wavered. The figure stopped, rain cascading off their cloak in torrents. Slowly, they drew the sword from its sheath. The blade was unlike anything Lina had ever seen—crimson veins pulsed along its edge, as if the weapon itself was alive. “You shouldn’t be here,” the stranger said, their voice low and rough, like gravel scraping against stone. Lina took a step back, her heart pounding. She didn’t know if it was fear, curiosity, or both that made her ask, “Who are you?” The stranger hesitated, their grip tightening on the sword. Finally, they replied: “A warning.” Before Lina could press further, the stranger turned and vanished into the shadows of the Emberwood, leaving only the whisper of their words behind.
