I jolted awake, my heart pounding. A scream pierced the night air, sending chills down my spine. Chaos erupted in the witch camp as everyone scrambled to their feet.
"What's happening?" I shouted, struggling to see in the darkness.
One of the witches lit a fire with her magic, illuminating the horrifying scene. A young witch lay on the ground, her throat slashed, blood pooling around her lifeless body.
"By the goddess," an elder witch gasped, her face pale with shock.
I stood frozen, unable to comprehend what I was seeing. The camp descended into panic, witches running in all directions, their screams mixing with the sound of rustling leaves and snapping twigs.
"It can't be," one of the witches whispered, her eyes wide with fear as she turned to me. "The killing... it's the signature of the Shadowblade Assassin."
I felt the blood drain from my face. "What? No, I didn't-"
"Traitor!" another witch screamed, pointing an accusing finger at me. "We saved you! We welcomed you into our home!"
Before I could defend myself, an arrow whistled through the air, striking the screaming witch in the chest. She fell, her eyes wide with surprise and pain.
"We're under attack!" someone yelled.
As if on cue, dark figures emerged from the shadows. I recognized the royal insignia on their armor - Jude's men.
"Run!" Jason shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me into the forest.
We crashed through the undergrowth, branches whipping at our faces. Behind us, I could hear the witches chanting, their magic crackling in the air as they fought against Jude's warriors.
"We have to go back," I panted, my conscience gnawing at me. "We can't just leave them."
"They think you killed one of their own," Jason reminded me. "We'd be running into certain death."
A fireball whizzed past my ear, singeing my hair. I yelped and ran faster, realizing Jason was right.
"There she is!" a gruff voice shouted. "Get the Shadowblade!"
I risked a glance over my shoulder and saw three of Jude's men gaining on us. My legs burned with exertion, but fear pushed me forward.
Suddenly, my foot caught on a root, and I went sprawling. I tumbled down a small incline, coming to a stop in a patch of mud. As I struggled to my feet, a familiar figure stepped out of the shadows.
Jude.
My breath caught in my throat as I looked up at him. His eyes, once filled with love, now burned with hatred and determination.
"Finally," he growled, raising his sword. "It ends here, Shadowblade."
I scrambled backward, my hands sinking into the mud. "Jude, please," I begged. "I'm not who you think I am. I haven't killed anyone!"
He laughed, a cold, bitter sound that made my skin crawl. "Still playing innocent, Loise? After all the lives you've taken? After you murdered my mother?"
"I didn't-" I started, but my words were cut short as Jude lunged forward, his sword arcing through the air.
I closed my eyes, bracing for the blow. But it never came.
Instead, I heard a pained grunt and the sound of a body hitting the ground. My eyes flew open to see Jude lying face-down in the mud, a long gash across his back.
Standing over him was a figure shrouded in shadow, holding a blade that seemed to glow. Had the real assassin come for me?
“I didn’t mean to take your identity, please…’’
As the person stepped forward, the moon’s light revealed a familiar face.
Jason.
He stood there, the shimmering blade in his hand, his eyes fixed on Jude's unconscious form.
"Jason?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "What... how..."
As he turned to face me, realization dawned, hitting me like a punch to the gut. The mysterious deaths, the legendary skills, the shadowy blade - it all made sense now. Everywhere I went, Jason was. He was my best friend, never left my side. I let myself fall in love with him. How…
Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at the man I thought I knew, the friend I had trusted, the boyfriend I had fallen for. "It's you," I choked out. "You're the assassin!"
