PROLOGUE
That evening rain fell heavily and flooded the streets. It was late in the evening, and nothing could be heard for miles only the sounds of cold rain hitting the pavement or thunder and lightning as it struck over the massive stratus clouds. A small town in Louisiana filled with history, color and vibrant lights, now laid still, dark and gloomy with not a soul in sight. The brisk wind blew heavily with strong velocity against the tall trees and the swaying grass. You could hear it as it traveled through the old wind chimes, the wooden shudders of the old homes, the tall rural church and empty park swings. All of nature orchestrated a beautiful melancholy melody that night as to bring about a warning of what was to come.
The Western Orphanage, Est. 1925, stood at the far end of the town. There Headmaster Jameson, Sister Evelyn and Sister Anna oversaw the local church and the children's orphanage. The community thrived helping each other but the orphaned children survived with the churches labor and donations.
That night in the orphanage dormitories you could hear as the thunder roared in the distance, how the wind howled through the dark hallways and the loud shudders banged against the old brick walls. There was only a faint light from a stove furnace keeping the cold and darkness at bay. The storm ruled the night but inside those walls it was as if time had stood still, a moment frozen in time. The children slept safe and cozy in bed while the storm continued to blow.
Sister Evelyn believed in kindness and hard work and lived by the saying, "Early to bed, early to rise."That night even after following the same mundane routine at bed time, she felt anxious and could not fall asleep. She tossed and turned for what felt like an eternity to her as she looked around her plain dormitory, "Nothing!". After much debate Sister Evelyn finally decided to get up from bed and check on the children. She convinced herself she was only nervous and anxious because of the storm, and it was normal to feel that way. She checked on the children they were all in bed sound asleep.Content, with a sigh of relief Sister Evelyn exits the children's room and notices Sister Anna making her way down the dark hallway to the kitchen.
Sister Evelyn follows Sister Anna to the kitchen and notices that Sister Anna was anxious as well as she searched frantically for her chamomile tea.
Sister Evelyn looks out the window, "Looks like a storm is headed our way tonight. It has been raining heavily for several hours now."
Sister Anna sets the kettle down filled with water on the gas stove and tries to light it with an old lighter, "This old church has been giving us and the children warmth and shelter for what seems to be like a lifetime."Patting the old brick, "I hope you have a few more years left in you, we are going to need all the help we can get with this storm."
Sister Evelyn sits down in an old rocking chair by the window still staring out."As nuns all we can do is pray and try to take care for those in this home and this community. Donations can only get us so much and I sure don't know much about repairs."
Sister Anna lights the old gas stove and sits across from Sister Evelyn in silence. In silence they both sit and gaze in awe at the turbulent storm through the window. All that seemed to echo through the halls was the howling of the wind and lightning. But suddenly a faint whisper of a cry reached their ears. The Sisters looked at each other in silence with a puzzled looked. They both instantly thought, Did you hear it?! Only to be interrupted by a loud child's cry.
They both rushed out of their chairs and down the hallway thinking it was one of the children in the dormitory. They ran and ran only to be stopped by the child's whimpers and cries echoes coming from the front entrance. Sister Evelyn rushed and opened the door to see a small infant laying at their doorstep. It was a little girl crying soaked in tears and cold rain. She was robed in a satin rose pattern swaddle with an engraved blue raven emblem. They rushed the poor crying child out of the rain. They gave her a warm bath, clothed her in clean clothing and fed her warm formula in a bottle.
Sister Anna held the child and started to rock her to sleep."It is such a shame giving up something so precious. She can't be older then 6 months, the poor thing. What shall we do?"
Sister Evelyn picked up the baby's swaddle and noticed the emblem." Look here it must mean something. She carries a gold necklace with a ring with the same emblem. Whom ever gave this to her must of really cared for her. It is a sad world sometimes, and we do things we don't want to do. We must protect this child and give it a home."
Sister Anna looks at the childs eyes and smiles as she notices the beauty, One deep blue, one deep green."You truly are special my child. Do not worry, you are safe here."
Sister Evelyn smiles and agrees. " She needs a name worthy of a great path." Looks outside the window to see a beautiful sun rising through the clouds. How about Eden? The end to darkness and the beginning of light, she is our Eden.
