Chapter Three Aurora Yesterday was hell, being late to work and all that with Everest’s family. I was too tired to talk to Everest last night. So, I have not had the chance to tell him about my trip yet. The meeting with Mr. Silver should be done soon. We have been here for over two hours. Something about him has me staring. I need to focus, but I cannot take my eyes off him. My head is a mess with home life and now this handsome stranger has some strange thoughts crossing my mind as well. How are we going to work together? How am I going to work this case at all? I’m not sure i have the strength to work and deal with Everst the wedding, his family and training the packs! This is far too much for one person to tackle! “Ms Faizan, I understand you have been fighting for a long time to clear your client and get him out of prison and I will do my best to assist and help you during the court case. I have everything booked for next week's interviews that you requested, and I have now got all the files you asked for at my office back in New york. I am looking forward to working with you.” He is talking to me. Mr. Silver is looking straight at me. His face is calm, with a small smile on his lips. I was not even listening. What was he talking about? “Sorry, yes, sir.” Mr. Silver smiles and Ms Rayne looks pissed. “Aurora, can I have a word in my office, please?” Ms Rayne excuses herself for a moment, walking to her office. I am going to lose my job if I am not careful, I need to become organised. Standing from the chair making my way to Ms Rayne’s office. Bumping straight into Aliya. I have not had a chance to apologise to her for taking her place on this business trip. I can feel Mr. Silver's eyes on my back as he watches from the conference door. “Well, look who it is, the b***h who stole my job. How is it going in there?” “Aliya, please do not be like that. You know I am being forced into this. I would never purposely steal a job from anyone. Not great. She wants me in her office now, so I need to go.” “I know she forced it on you, but this was my chance to prove myself. Do not worry about it, ok, oh and, Mr. Silver has not taken his eyes off you since you left the room.” Aliya winks at me as she struts off down the hall. I can feel the warmth from his eyes burning into my back! Walking to Ms Rayne’s office without looking back, reaching the door, a voice calls my name Everest? “Aurora, we need to talk.” “Not now. I am busy.” “I know and you’re stressed I will wait in your office.” “Everest, I said not now!!” Walking into the office, Karen stands arms crossed over her chest. If looks could kill. “How dare you embarrass me like that in front of one of the best lawyers in the trade!? I told him working with you would be easy. Get your s**t together Aurora, any more slip ups and you are out!” I have had enough of Karen going off at me. I have worked too hard to let her intimidate me now when it is time to show everyone what i can do! I am sick of people controlling every part of my life. “Listen to me Karen, I have worked myself into the ground for the past two years. I have shown you and everyone else at this company what I can do. You are giving me a tough time because I was late once. I will not have you breathing down my neck the entire time I am working with Mr Silver. You need to get off my back. My fiancé is in my office. I have not had the chance to tell him you are sending me to New York yet and you are treating me like this! If you want me to give it my all. You need to let me do it my way.” Karen smiles, clapping her perfectly manicured hands together. Twisting my neck, I need to calm down. I cannot trust myself after what happened yesterday. “Aurora, what is going on up there? Calm down.” “Everest talking to me will not help me calm me down.” “Sorry.” “Finally, you let it out. I have waited for this, Aurora. The fight in you. I know you are amazing at your job. I just needed to see if you had the backbone. Mr. Silver has a reputation for snapping at his colleagues. Now I know you can manage yourself.” “You have got to be kidding me. So, you wanted to see if I could handle Mr. Big shot. You are unbelievable. Do you know that?” “Yes, Aurora, how do you think I made it up to the top of this company?” Karen walks around the desk, making her way to the door. “Let’s go make Mr. Silver a happy partner.” Without turning, she walks back to the conference room. Mr. Silver stands, leaning on the door. Our eyes lock the second I look up. A force hits me, stopping me in my tracks. Frozen in place, the office around me blurs out. All I can see is the pain and sorrow behind his amazing silver eyes. Shivers dance over my skin. The room comes back in a flash and suddenly I am stood in front of Mr. Silver staring at him. “Let us finish, shall we? Then I can leave you to get to know each other.” “Aurora, I really need to talk to you now.” A small growl echoes around my head. Rubbing my head, trying to ease the pain. I cannot wait to go away for the week. Finally, I will have time to be alone and clear my mind. “I hope this is important.” “Sorry, could you all excuse me for a moment?” “Of course, Miss Faizan.” Mr. Silver is the only person to speak. Karen rolls her eyes and shooing her hand towards the door. “Thank you, Mr. Silver, Mrs. Rayne.” Walking into my office slamming the door behind me, locking it quickly and closing the blinds. I do not need or want people staring at us. Everest has made himself more than comfortable in my chair behind my desk. What does he think he is doing touching my laptop? “You are great at this lawyer thing. My father should see this. It could change his mind on certain matters.” “Speaking of what is so important, you had to drag me out of an important meeting? My job is at stake because of you and your family. This better be good. Oh, and if you ever try to use your growl on me again. This will be over. I will return home to my family, understand?” Everest does not look happy, a queen or in my case future queen. We obey our mates. Debate and find a solution that pleases both of us. I will not let him dominate me anymore! “Sorry Aurora, I am struggling with my transition. You got home late and left early. I have not had the chance to talk to you about yesterday. I was not waiting until tonight.” “Everest you pulled me out of my meeting to talk about your father!?” A low rumble leaves with my words, I have no time to stop it. Everest needs to learn he cannot Just drop by like this and demand I stop working for him. “No, I came to tell you that my father does not want you living with the rest of the pack. I talked, him round, kicking you back to your father. I will not see you hurt. He agreed to let you live in the cabin until the wedding.” His father wanted me gone. He will never accept me as queen. He does not want the changes I can bring to his people. How can I lead these people, wolves, if they do not trust me? Not to mention this was their idea! I never wanted any of this! “Really? Your people will never accept me, Everest. No one has ever accepted me for who I am. I thought I was ok with that, but since I have been with you my mind-set has changed. Can we talk about this at home later?” He stands from my chair shaking his head, doing that sigh he loves. Walking towards me, I cannot have him near me. Avoiding him moving around the other side of the desk. “No, I am sorry Aurora, I broke the rules last night staying with you. I am not to go into the cabin until we marry.” “Your father is a joke. Well, meet me by the lake. I have something to tell you. Now I need to go. Please leave.” Nodding, he walks to the door. He turns, smiling a light smile that does nothing to hide his uneasiness. Sulking out of the door, why is my life so damn complicated? “Miss Faizan?” Hearing my name on his tongue has my knees wobbling. Turning to see Mr. Silver standing in my doorway. “Mr. Silver, I am so sorry. I missed the end of the meeting. I will read over the notes Ms Rayne has written to catch up.” He walks into my office, closing the door behind him. “Please, Call me Jaxen. Mr. Silver is so formal. Yes, your boss took notes to give to you. She speaks fondly of you, Ms Faizan.” “I’m sure she was just being polite and call me Aurora. I hate my last name.” “Yes, Aurora, if I remember it is of Latin origin, and the meaning, dawn. Did you know in mythology Aurora was the Roman goddess of sunrise? Why do you not like your last name?” “I did not know the meaning of my birth name. However, I know the meaning of my surname.” The name haunted my childhood and still does. “Faizan means ruler.” Jaxen stands with a small smile, walking around my office, looking around at the open space. The office door flies open. Aliya walks in, fiddling with a bottle of Champaign. With her attention on the bottle, she does not notice Jaxen. “Why didn’t you tell me you got engaged? I thought you were single. We must celebrate.” “Aliya.” “Congratulation's girl.” “Aliya!” “What?” Looking up, her face drops the moment she sees Jaxen. He does not seem to care, smiling his bright, wide smile. “I am so sorry. I will come back later.” “No, stay. I was about to leave. Celebrate Aurora before you must leave.” Nodding his head, he leaves. Aliya stands red in the face, trying not to laugh. An empty feeling washes over me as I watch Jaxen walk away. “I am so sorry, Aurora.” “Forget about it now. One drink I am driving.” “Yes, how does Mr. fiancé feel about you leaving the country for a week?” Looking away, I do not want to have this conversation with her. I do not want to have it with Everest either. Aliya pours the champion into two glasses, looking at me with her arm out, waiting for an answer. Taking the drink from her outstretched arm, gulping it down in one go. “Oh my god, you have not told him, have you? This must be good. What is going on?” “I don’t want to talk about it, Aliya.” “Fine, but you drank that drink far too fast, so one more?” Rolling my eyes passing the glass back smiling wide, she snatches the glass. Someone is happy. I am surprised she is being so nice since I stole her job from her. A feeling washes over me, a feeling from my wolf she is trying to warn me. Aliya turns with the glasses before passing it back, sipping away at the content. Walking over to my desk, sitting down on the chair, my head spinning. My wolf is fighting to break free. She can manage this more than my human form can. “Wah, wh” Talking seems impossible slurring my words, Aliya places the glasses down on my desk. Her smile turns sour. “Something wrong Aurora? I think someone has had a little too much champion. And while at work. Tut, tut, I do not think Karen will be happy to see her golden girl drunk.” Aliya pours the rest of the bottle into the plant next to me. Once she is finished, she puts the bottle next to me. Collecting the glasses up, she walks towards the door. This b***h has drugged me. She is going to get me fired. Fighting to stay in control of my transformation, I am in danger. My wolf naturally wants to protect herself. Everest and his dad will never let me come back here if they find out. “I’m coming for you!” Aliya stops dead at the door. “Aurora, once Karen finds you in a couple of minutes, you will not be able to come for me. If you find another job, take this as a lesson. Do not steal other people’s work.” “Aliya f**k off.” A loud, angry howl comes from outside. Oh no. Aliya looks shocked. “Was that a wolf howling in the city? They rarely come this close. Oh well, that will be dead by morning” Laughing, she leaves my office, leaving me drugged and slumped over my desk. I know she is on her way to tell Karen. Everest is here now. He will help me; ugh I hate that I need his help. “I am coming. I brought a friend. They are taking care of Karen.” A friend who could he have brought that will help me when I have proved them all right? My body is numb, struggling to keep my eyes open. The door to my office flies off as Everest comes charging into the room. The worried look on his face is the last thing I see as darkness sweeps over my vision.
