1.THE ULTIMATUM
CHAPTER 1: THE ULTIMATUM ~QUINTESSA~ If I lost my scholarship, I’d be sleeping in my car by Friday night. That was the brutal, unvarnished reality staring back at me in the reflection of Mr. Rogers’ polished mahogany desk. My fingers dug into the aluminum edge of my clipboard so hard the metal bit into my palms, but I welcomed the pain. It was the only thing keeping me from screaming. "Look at the red ink, Miss Wren. It doesn't lie, and it doesn't give extensions." The sports director didn't even look up as he spoke. He casually unscrewed the cap of an expensive fountain pen, signing off on varsity travel budgets with a rhythmic, sickening scratch. On the center of his desk sat my internship packet, ruined by a massive, bleeding crimson stamp. PROJECT ASSIGNMENT: Athlete Retention Strategy. TARGET SUBJECT: Maddox Jakes (Team Captain/Center). STATUS: Resignation Tendered. CRITICAL CLAUSE: Funding contingent on successful retention. "Sir, this isn't a project. It’s an execution," I said, my voice dangerously tight. I forced my posture straight, refusing to let him see the sheer terror clawing at my throat. "Maddox Jakes didn't just quietly submit a letter. He announced his retirement on his public social media accounts. The campus forums are completely melting down. The sports networks are already running segments on his departure. He’s gone. How am I supposed to single-handedly reprogram the most stubborn, untouchable player at Dawson Creek University?" Rogers finally leveled a cold, entirely unsympathetic gaze at me and then he leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers. "That is exactly why it is your assignment, Quintessa. The board doesn't hand out full-ride Athlete Development scholarships to sophomores just because they can memorize a textbook.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “We need results. The Grand Championship Qualifiers are in exactly three months. If our star center isn't on that ice, the school loses millions in sponsorships." "But to tie my entire future to his whim—" "If Maddox Jakes walks, your funding walks with him," Rogers interrupted, his tone as sharp and final as a guillotine. He pointed a finger toward the heavy oak door. "You have until next Monday to show me a viable strategy, or your housing and tuition grants are permanently revoked. Your time starts now." A suffocating wave of panic crashed over me. I grabbed the packet, spun on my heel, and yanked the door open. Without this scholarship, I was absolutely nothing. I couldn't afford a single credit hour here. Worse, I would become a financial parasite to my Aunt, who was already working double shifts at a clinic just to keep my young cousins fed. I refused to let my life fall apart because some arrogant athlete decided he was bored of his own god-tier talent. I burst out into the narrow, fluorescent-lit corridor, completely blinded by the adrenaline roaring through my veins. I didn't even take two steps before I slammed full-force into an absolute wall of solid muscle."Watch where you're going, Wren." A rough, low baritone vibrated directly against my collarbone. The impact violently knocked the air straight out of my lungs. I stumbled backward, my hands instinctively shot out to steady myself, planting flat against a broad, unyielding chest hidden beneath a heavy dark grey athletic hoodie. My eyes tracked upward, and my heart did a sudden, chaotic flip. Towering shoulders that completely blocked out the hallway lights. A jawline so sharp it looked sculpted from granite. Disheveled, dirty blonde hair, and a pair of eyes the color of a winter storm—pale, piercing, and entirely devoid of human warmth. Maddox Jakes. He stood there, smelling intensely of clean linen, fresh mint, and raw masculine power. He was the undisputed king of this campus. Half the girls at Dawson Creek ruined their lives trying to catch his eye, and the other half lied about it to save their pride. He carried himself like he owned the building, the hockey program, and every single person in it. "You," I breathed, my panic instantly souring into pure, unadulterated fury. I kept my palms pressed against his chest, trying to push him back to reclaim my personal space. He didn't move an inch. It was like trying to shove a concrete pillar. "You are the exact reason my entire life is imploding right now." Maddox lowered his head slightly, crowding me until my shoulder blades hit the cold drywall of the hallway. His dark gaze slowly dropped to the stamped packet clutched in my trembling fingers and I could see a lazy, mocking smirk cutting across his lips. "Ah. The sophomore intern," he murmured, his voice was a dangerous, low purr that sent a sudden spike of heat rushing under my skin. "Rogers finally dropped his little nanny project on you, did he?" "I am an Athlete Development coordinator, Jakes," I snapped, glaring up at him despite the fact that he stood nearly a foot taller than me. "And you are being incredibly, unbelievably selfish. You have three months until the biggest tournament in this school's history. The NHL scouts are literally booking flights to see you play. Why the hell are you throwing your career away?" Maddox’s expression altered in a microsecond. The lazy, teasing smirk vanished, replaced by an icy, impenetrable wall that made the air in the corridor feel instantly freezing. He leaned in even closer, bending down until his lips were just inches from my ear, his breath fanning hot against my skin. "Let me make something very clear to you, Wren," he whispered, his voice dripping with absolute, ruthless authority. "I don't care about the qualifiers. Or the scouts. Or the team, and I definitely don't give a damn about your little project." My breath hitched violently in my throat. I could feel the intense heat radiating off his massive body, contrasting with the absolute coldness in his eyes. "Give up right now," Maddox said, his eyes locking back onto mine, pinning me to the spot like a predator cornering its prey. "Save yourself the tears and the paperwork. Because I am leaving this school, and there is absolutely nothing a little sophomore like you can do to stop me." He straightened up, throwing a cold and disdainful glance over his shoulder before turning his back on me. He walked down the corridor with slow, arrogant strides, completely unbothered by the absolute chaos he left in his wake. I stood there for a long moment, my chest heaving, my fingers gripping the aluminum edge of my clipboard until my knuckles went completely white. He was arrogant. He was impossible. He was a f*****g brick wall. But as I watched his retreating form disappear around the corner, a fierce, reckless determination ignited in my gut. He thought he could just freeze me out like everyone else. He thought his silence was an unbeatable weapon. He had no idea how hard I was willing to fight for my survival. If Maddox Jakes wanted a war, I was going to give him one.
