Prologue
"We need to hurry Hannah, there isn't much time." A panicked gruff voice speaks over a downpour of rain.
"But my baby. I can't leave my baby, David. Please don't make me leave her." The woman sobs uncontrollably.
"I'm sorry, my love. You have to. We just have to pray to the Moon Goddess that she saves her and brings her back to us." David wrapped his arms around his mate and held her as she cradled their newborn daughter.
"What are we going to do without you?" Hannah coos at her infant, lightly brushing her hand across her cheek before placing a finger in her daughters grasp. She smiled and there was so much pain in her face that the happiness of holding her daughter was overshadowed by it.
In the not too far distance a wolf howls, causing David and Hannah to jump.
"Go." David helped Hannah up and shoved her lightly towards the nearby town. "Go, now. I'll hold them off. I love you."
"I love you."Hannah ran to him crying harder, and gave him a kiss before watching him shift and run towards the howls, his own flowing through his throat in defiance, protective of his family.
She hadn't ran far before she could hear the fighting break out.
"David." She chokes on her sob, almost going back for him. Torn between the two people she cared most about, she faltered before continuing to run. He would want her to protect their child before going back for him. Her heart hammering loudly in her chest was the only sound she could hear, drowning out everything else.
There has to be a fire station around here somewhere. Or a hospital. Something! She thought as she raced through the streets, shielding her baby from as much of the rain as possible, even though they were both soaked already.
The tiny creature in her arms stirred and started to fuss, squirming a little.
"Shhh, my sweet." Hannah whispers to her, still looking for an infant drop off space, a safe area to place an unwanted newborn with no questions asked. Finally, in the middle of the town, she finds a hospital. She sat down with her baby in a covered bus stop, escaping the rain and stealing away precious time just to have a few more minutes with her. She nursed her, happy for the slight moment of bonding that came with breastfeeding, providing her with vital nutrients as her first meal. "At least I was able to do this for you, even if it was only once."
She placed a long kiss on her forehead before walking in the ER doors. The receptionist wasn't there but heard the doors and called out "I'll be right with you! Just one moment!"
Looking around the waiting area she saw the little bassinet and a sign for parents leaving their babies 'We know it's hard. If you would like help please call us. If you can't take care of your baby, trust us, they'll be safe here'. Another small sob escapes Hannahs quivering lips as she places her baby in the tiny bed.
"Goodbye, my little love. You mean so much more to me than you'll ever know. Goodnight for all the nights I'll miss. A kiss, " she bent and kissed her forehead again, "for every boo-boo I won't be there to fix. And this," she placed a necklace with a wolfs head on it, "to help you know what you are." She brushed her cheek again lovingly before prying herself away from the little bed, looking at her baby one last time. "I'm sorry."
