"After your session with Linda you're going to have to walk to your defense lessons on your own. Afterwards, please walk to the restaurant. It's only the next block over." My mom said as I was getting out of her car in front of my psychiatrists office. "It'll be good for you. Remember what she said last week about testing the limits of your comfort zone and techniques to help you not be so scared."
"Okay, I'll try. If I freak though I'm calling you and staying put."
"No rescue tonight, Savy. Brandt has a nasty cough and called out today. I'm the only one that could cover."
I groaned but accepted. Saying goodbye I went inside and sat in the waiting area with a book to read. After 10 minutes the door opened and out walked a frail looking old man, then Linda appeared at the doorway. She was very slender with long legs, sleek dark brown hair down her back, and wore a dress suit. I always thought the most beautiful part of her was the tribal looking crescent moon tattooed on her neck. I never asked about it but I always look while I can.
"Savia, good to see you." She gathered a few folders from her desk, placed them in a filling cabinet then sat down, motioning for me to sit too in a chair across from her. "So tell me, anymore dreams? Anything new? "
I sighed deeply and thought about all the nights these dreams have continued to haunt me.
"Yes. They make me feel like I'm being hunted down now. They've been taking place in different locations and all of them seem to be local. I don't like the feeling it's been giving me."
"What feeling would that be?" Linda inquired and leaned forward.
"Adrenaline powered anxiety. I feel like I need to run."
Like WE need to run. Sounded the voice in my head that I have been choosing to ignore. And you feel adrenalin because he's our mate. You want to go to him.
"Okay." Linda nodded then looked like she was deep in thought. "What else has been going on?"
"I always feel like I'm on edge. I can't seem to just relax or calm down. it's mentally exhausting. I don't feel comfortably leaving the house alone still. I don't know why I'm just so terrified."
It's not terror you fool. I told you, he's our mate. Why aren't you running to him? Why must you keep us pent up inside that house?
Shut it 'Vex'. You're not real. You're a figment associated with the response my body has been having towards that guy. I thought in reply.
You STUPID girl! Vex growled. How long are you going to deny me? I. AM. YOUR. WOLF. Your act pretending not to know was cute at first but there's no point in this meeting. You're not insane. You're not troubled. You just want our mate and damn it all so do I!
"Maybe, try going for a run." Linda said, starting me out of the argument inside my head. "Listen to some calming music and get your heart pumping. You can bring a friend or see if your mother wants to join in. Exercise can be very helpful. You get rid of some of that energy and can, hopefully, relax. Try it before bed tonight to see if it helps you sleep."
"Thank you, I will."
We finished up the rest of the session without the intrusion of 'Vex'. I could feel an anger seething that wasn't mine deep in the back of my head. When I tried to focus on it I felt like I heard the area scoff at me and then walls.
I was confused but that was beside the point. I was cutting it really close to being late for the defense class. I had to bring myself to go alone.

I could swear each night we were getting closer to speaking in her dreams but she always leaves before I can say anything. I'll have to speak as soon as she enters tonight.
This feeling of longing was staring to become too much. It's been weeks. Normally it doesn't take this long for mates to be united. Everyone else was always instantly in each other's arms as soon a they found their mate. Why did she always run away instead of towards me?
I sighed and leaned against the wall of the motel room I was staying in. I could fit at least two of these things in my living room easily with extra space to spare.
We should go out and look again. I feel like this time will be worth it. My wolf, Sage, said.
My wolf was truly one for alphas. He seemed old and wise. Without a Luna to help me l I often consulted him on pack matters. He has never steered me wrong and the whole pack has always liked his suggested improvements and plans. I was lucky to have him as my wolf.
We can go look after I eat.
Or, we look now, and eat later. There was that restaurant we noticed last time on the way. We can stop there. La Nappe Veloutée I think it was called.
I remembered seeing the place. If I was going to a restaurant then burning of some extra fuel would benefit. I don't like eating out if I'm only peckish.
A shower first then. I compromised. If we find her, I want to smell fresh.

"Okay, now Savy I want you to try to avoid Victor's attack. The goal is to attempt to make sure you can escape. Remember, always try to run away first and make noise. Physical contact is for last resort moments only. Victor is going to try to corner you. In this instance if you can't get around, which is the goal, you're going to have to react quickly. I want to see everything you've learned today in action. Do you remember the steps?" Jennifer, the instructor, said. I nodded. "Alright. Let's begin."
Victor came towards me and I mimicked slamming my open palm into his chin and shoving upwards, grabbing his shoulders I then pretended to knee him in the genitals before grabbing his head and pulling him down towards my knee.
"Very good! You remembered all the steps! Each of these together will help get you away. You learn quickly."
"Thanks." I smiled at the praise and went to my bag so I could get a drink of water.
Jennifer walked over to me and smiled.
"Question," she said, "would you want to try boxing with me? There's nothing else happening here tonight and I could use a workout."
"Okay." I nodded and she briefly left the room to grab us a pair of boxing gloves each. After stepping in the ring she went over basics, showed me how to block and what were good hits and what would be very bad, and we began.
An hour after, sweating and heart pounding, I chugged down my water, breathing deeply trying to get my body under control. It was starting to get dark now and I decided with my new information and protections, I could make it to the restaurant on my own. Changing out of my sweaty clothes I decided I would need to freshen up some. Tossing the dirty clothes into my drawstring bag I grabbed a hairbrush, hair tie, deodorant, and perfume from my locker in the buildings gym. I stared at the mirror, hair tie in my mouth as I gathered all my hair into a ponytail, I felt the unmistakable goosebumps form on my arms, my heart skipping. I quickly finished putting my hair up and sprayed some perfume. It was time to face this fear and confront my demons.
As soon as I stepped outside I was hit with a strong smell. It smelled like the forest after it rains. That's strange. I'm not near the woods and it's been dry all week with a heat wave.
Mate. Vex sighed into my head. It's our mate.
Frantically I started looking all around me, spinning in case I missed him. I would protect myself. I knew this would happen if I left without someone with me. I knew I would have an anxiety attack and panic. I knew it.
This would have happened either way. He's been searching.
As soon as Vex said the words, he appeared around the corner. Trying to make myself unseen I duck into an alley and crouch behind a dumpster. It didn't matter. He too, started walking down the alley. Heart pounding I realized there was no became. It was a dead end.
"Stay back. I-I have mace." I stutter out. "And self defense lessons. I'm warning you." He still walked closer. Suddenly I heard him speak words I kept to myself. Words I never wanted anyone else to hear be said.
"Mate."
