CHAPTER FOUR — The Hidden Bracelet

1230 Words
The first thing Lila felt was silence. Not the peaceful kind. The heavy kind. The kind that made her realize she was somewhere unfamiliar before she even opened her eyes. Her eyelids fluttered open slowly. White ceiling. Soft lighting. Clean room. Too clean. She sat up immediately. Pain shot through her head. “Where… am I?” she whispered. The room was modern but unfamiliar nothing like her small, cramped apartment. The bed she was on felt too soft, too expensive, like she didn’t belong on it. Her heart began to race. Then she remembered. The SUV. The men. The word Ashford. Lila pushed herself off the bed quickly. “Hello?!” she called out. “Is anyone here?!” Silence. Then footsteps. Calm. Measured. The door opened. Daniel Cross walked in. He didn’t look surprised to see her awake. “You’re safe,” he said simply. Lila stared at him. Safe. That word felt strange in his mouth. “Where is this place?” she demanded immediately. “What did you do? Why am I here?!” Daniel didn’t rush. He never did. “You passed out from exhaustion and shock,” he said. “This is a secure location.” “I didn’t agree to this!” “You didn’t have a choice.” That sentence made her fists tighten. “I’m not your responsibility,” she snapped. A pause. Daniel studied her for a moment. “You are now,” he said. Lila hated how calm he was. “How long am I supposed to stay here?” “As long as necessary.” “For what?!” she raised her voice. “For you to keep telling me I’m someone I’m not?!” Daniel didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped aside slightly. “There are guards outside,” he said. “You’re not a prisoner. But you are not free to walk out yet either.” Lila’s chest rose and fell quickly. “You’re insane.” Daniel didn’t react. “You should rest,” he said. Then he turned and left the room. The door clicked shut. Locking her in silence. Minutes passed. Then hours. Lila sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the wall. Her mind wouldn’t slow down. Ashford. The name again. And the message. THE REAL HEIRESS HAS BEEN FOUND. Her stomach tightened. “What is happening to me…” she whispered. She stood suddenly. “I need answers.” She began searching the room. Not trusting anything. Not trusting him. Drawers. Cabinet. Small table. Nothing. Until She noticed a small black bag placed neatly on a chair. Her things. Her school bag. Her belongings. She rushed to it. Rifling through it quickly. Books. Pens. Old receipt. Then Something fell. Clink. She froze. A small object rolled across the floor. Silver. Lila bent down slowly. Her fingers touched it. Cold metal. She picked it up. A bracelet. Old. Broken. But beautifully designed. A strange symbol was engraved into it. A crest. She frowned. “This… isn’t mine,” she whispered. But even as she said it… Her fingers tightened around it. Something inside her reacted. Like recognition without memory. Her chest tightened slightly. “No… I’ve never seen this before…” But her hand refused to let go. The door opened again. Daniel entered. He stopped immediately when he saw the bracelet. His expression changed. For the first time… slightly. “You found it,” he said quietly. Lila stood up immediately. “What is this?” Daniel stepped closer. His eyes were fixed on the bracelet. Not her. “This belongs to the Ashford family line,” he said. Silence. The air in the room changed instantly. Lila shook her head. “Stop saying that name like it means something to me!” Daniel looked at her now. “Because it does.” She stepped forward. “No. It doesn’t. I don’t know anything about any family, any mansion, any Ashford nothing!” Her voice cracked slightly at the end. But she didn’t stop. “Why are you doing this to me?! Why are people chasing me?! Why are you telling me I belong to some rich family?!” Daniel didn’t interrupt her. He let her words fall. Let her anger burn out slightly. Then he spoke. Calm. But heavier than before. “You were likely switched at birth.” Silence. Lila blinked. Once. Twice. Then shook her head slowly. “No…” Daniel continued. “The Ashford Dynasty is one of the most powerful families in the country.” Lila stepped back unconsciously. “That’s not real,” she whispered. “It is.” Another pause. Daniel’s voice lowered slightly. “And someone made sure your identity disappeared completely.” That hit differently. Lila’s breathing became uneven. “What are you saying?” “I’m saying,” Daniel replied, “you were erased.” The room felt too small suddenly. Too heavy. Lila’s hand trembled. “No… no, that’s impossible…” But her mind betrayed her. Flash. A grand staircase. Flash. A woman holding her hand. Flash. A voice calling her name “Young Miss Ashford…” She dropped the bracelet. It hit the floor with a sharp sound. Lila backed away. “I don’t want this,” she whispered. “I don’t want any of this.” Daniel watched her carefully. “I know,” he said. That made her look up sharply. “You don’t understand anything about me!” A pause. Then Daniel said quietly: “I understand more than you think.” Silence again. But this time… It wasn’t calm. It was loaded. Something unspoken between them. Something dangerous. Then Daniel’s phone vibrated. He checked it. His expression changed instantly. Lila noticed. “What now?” she asked, fear creeping into her voice again. Daniel didn’t answer immediately. Then he said: “They’ve escalated.” Her stomach dropped. “What does that mean?” Before he could respond ANOTHER LOCATION A large mansion stood under golden lights. Luxury. Power. Control. Inside a grand room, a girl stood before a mirror. Perfect posture. Perfect dress. Perfect smile. She adjusted her earrings slowly. Behind her, servants moved silently. Everyone treated her like royalty. Because she was. Seraphina Ashford. The world believed she was the Ashford heiress. And she had lived that truth for years. But tonight… Something felt off. A faint tension in the house. Whispers she couldn’t hear clearly. She turned slightly to her assistant. “What’s going on?” she asked softly. The assistant hesitated. “There are rumors… about a second Ashford heir.” Seraphina’s smile didn’t move. But her eyes did. “Impossible,” she said gently. Yet her fingers tightened slightly. The assistant continued. “A girl… has appeared.” Silence. Seraphina turned fully now. Still elegant. Still calm. But something colder now lived behind her eyes. “Her name?” she asked. The assistant swallowed. “…Lila Morgan.” For the first time Seraphina’s smile faded completely. Not fear. Not shock. Something sharper. Recognition. And quiet danger. BACK TO LILA Daniel looked at his phone one last time. Then back at her. “She’s awake,” he said quietly. Lila frowned. “Who?” Daniel’s eyes darkened slightly. “The woman living your life.” Silence. Heavy. Final. And somewhere far away… Seraphina Ashford slowly closed her hand into a fist.
