Prologue
Sunlight, filtered through the windowpanes of the humble farmhouse, warmed Sadie’s calloused hands as she traced the lines on a faded photograph. A younger Sadie, her face radiant with joy, stood between her adoptive parents, the vibrant green of the Gonzalez family farm a familiar, comforting backdrop. This land, this life—it was her everything.
From childhood, she’d walked the fields with her adoptive father, her small hands learning the language of the land, the secrets whispered by the wind through the rice paddies, the rich, earthy scent of the soil after a rain.
Sadie Gonzalez poured her heart into the family farm. It was more than a responsibility; it was her life. The dream of owning it, of securing the future of its workers, was woven into her very being.
But, the news that it had been willed to her younger brother, who intended to sell, shattered her. A raw ache settled deep within her, a constant reminder of her loss.
Then came Markku Mattila, a force of nature in the form of a Finnish billionaire. "Forget that farm," he declared, his words a careless dismissal of her life's work. "You won't need it when you have me." His offer – a fleeting romance in Finland – hung in the air, a gilded cage presented as a solution. Sadie stared at her hands, the chipped nail polish a testament to her tireless labor, now seemingly meaningless. A fling? she thought, the word catching in her throat. He thinks a fleeting romance can replace the land, the people, the life I’ve poured my soul into?
Finland, with its pristine lakes and midnight sun, held the allure of escape. A part of her, weary and heartbroken, whispered, Maybe he’s right. Maybe this is a way out. But a stronger voice rebelled. No! I can't trade a lifetime of dedication for a temporary distraction. She closed her eyes, picturing the faces of her workers, their livelihoods intertwined with the fate of the farm. How could she abandon them for a whirlwind romance with a man who saw her pain as an opportunity?
"Escape is what he offers," she thought, "but it's connection I crave." Sadie craved commitment, a shared life built on enduring love, not a fleeting affair with a man who barely knew her. Could she convince this handsome Finn, accustomed to getting what he wanted, that forever outweighed a fling? Could she make him see that shared dreams held more value than fleeting desire? The battle raged within her – the seductive whisper of escape versus the unwavering yearning for true, lasting love. Could they bridge this chasm, or were their worlds destined to remain separate, their desires forever misaligned?
