Her aromatic scent follows her

The evening had drawn a quiet blanket over the house, but in the dimly lit corridor leading to the balcony, the air was alive.

Kavitha walked ahead, her steps light and deliberate against the cool floor. She hadn't said a word when she left the room, nor had she looked back to see if he was behind her. She didn't need to.

She knew her scent would fetch him.

Karthik tried to follow her
The Magnetic Orbit Kavitha didn’t just follow Karthik; she orbited him like a compass needle drawn to a permanent pole. To her, it was a quiet torment—a one-sided gravity where she stayed just steps behind, memorizing the cadence of his stride, the sharp line of his profile, and the way the air seemed to shift whenever he entered a room. She thought she was invisible, a silent shadow blending into the background of his life. She had no idea that Karthik felt her presence like a live wire running down his spine. Long before she ever realized he was looking back, Karthik’s nervous system had mapped her entirely. He knew the precise moment she walked into t he library—not by sight, but by the sudden, sharp tightening of the air between them. He felt the weight of her gaze burning into his shoulder blades, a delicious, distracting heat that made it impossible to focus on anything else. He didn't want to shatter the glass by turning around too fast, so he played his part, pretending not to notice while secretly drowning in the electricity of her nearness. The Static in the Air The tension between them was a physical force, building day by day, compressed and unexpressed. Whenever they crossed paths in the narrow college corridors, the proximity was dizzying. Karthik would deliberately slow his pace just enough for her to linger in his periphery, his heart hammering against his ribs like trapped lightning. He was terrified that if he turned and touched her, the sheer velocity of what he felt would overwhelm them both. And Kavitha lived in a state of perpetual breathlessness, convinced she was carrying a secret that would burn her alive if it ever escaped. The Storm It broke on an evening when the monsoon turned violent, slashing rain turning the city streets into slick mirrors under neon lights. Kavitha stood trapped under the corrugated metal awning of a corner tea stall, shivering slightly, her skin sensitized by the damp, heavy air. The storm was deafening, drowning out the world—until a familiar shadow cut through the downpour. Karthik didn’t stop at a polite distance this time. He crossed the threshold of the awning, closing the space between them until there was barely an inch of air left. The umbrella dropped to his side, letting the rain mist over them, completely ignored. The air between them crackled with a sudden, unbearable heat. "Three years, Kavitha," Karthik’s voice was low, rough, cutting straight through the roar of the thunder. "You’ve been haunting my steps for three years. Did you really think I couldn't feel every single one of them?" Kavitha’s breath hitched, her lungs seizing up. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, her eyes locked onto his, wide and trembling. "I... I didn't want to break the space between us. I thought I was just... a shadow." Karthik stepped closer—so close she could feel the heat radiating off his skin, intoxicating and sharp. He reached out, his fingers brushing against her jawline, calloused and trembling with restraint. The moment his thumb grazed her cheek, a visible shiver ran through her. "You were never a shadow," he whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to burn into her eyes. "You were the only thing keeping me grounded. I wasn't walking away from you, Kavitha. I was waiting for you to catch up so I could finally pull you in." His hand slid to the back of her neck, pulling her the rest of the way in. When his lips met hers, it wasn't a gentle collision—it was the spark that ignited the entire storm, a fierce, hungry release of years of pent-up electricity. Kavitha’s hands flew to his lapels, gripping the wet fabric of his shirt as the world dissolved around them.
